Default let an ex girlfriend "straighten" my hair

first off, hi.
im dieing over here and hoping you all can help.

over a year ago i was dating this girl who, "liked my hair, but wanted me to try something different with it". i have somewhere between wavy and curly hair, right between a 2 and a 3 i think(i dont totally understand the numbers yet). well my hair was a little poofy, bit it looked good like that and was ALWAYS soft. no matter what i did or what i used to wash it, it always came out feeling soft. Even as short hair it was super soft. At the time my hair was around 7 inches long, but i liked the girl, so i let her "straighten" it... i have no idea what she put in it, something over-the-counter.

It DESTROYED my hair. It became rough to the touch and didnt straighten at all, the waves just fit closer together (if that makes sense). I tried using extra conditioner for a while, constant trims, and even cut my hair down to about 2 inches and kept getting trims. It still felt horrible after a whole year, so i actually went bald for just over a week recently, dieing to get the rough hair off my head. It's growing back in, and is about half an inch long right now. Once agin its feeling rough and prickly kinda, like split ends maybe(im no stylist, i dont know).

Im willing to anything right now to fix this before i grow my hair back out (except going to a salon, job doesnt pay THAT well).

Any suggestions? Or would asking someone who works at a salon be the only real way to fix it? i just really miss my soft curly/wavy hair.

I know guys hate using extra products but try just spraying a leave in conditioner on the new growth - no gels, heavy oils or sprays for now. New growth shouldnt be put through much trauma with gunk !

Give it a lil more time, if no change, I say go to the doc.

Try giving it some time. Wait until it gets longer and see if it still feels that way. There shouldn't be any effect on new hair growth if you've gotten rid of the chemically treated part. Just take care of it the way you did before, and see how it goes. If you still have a problem when it's longer, then talk to a stylist for some advice on products.

Did she put a relaxer into your hair? I can't think of anything else that would take your hair from soft, to horrible feeling. If it's a relaxer, I think it's permanently altered until the straightened bit grows out! I'm so sorry if she did this to your hair, without you knowing.

Out of curiosity - what do you use on your hair now??? i.e shampoo and conditioner, styling etc - people can help you more then.

If your hair is really short I don't know that you'd be able to feel the texture or see how it's doing now until it grows out. Just my opinion. If you're hair is only an inch it will feel prickly - it's growing.

It does sound like a straightener or mild relaxer was put in your hair as you said it went from curl to waves. Once you chopped the processed dry hair should have gone.

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds to me like she put a relaxer in your hair. Was the product white by any chance? Did she put it in sections? If so, then she relaxed your hair. That's just awful! What a mean thing to do.

Shave it off and start over again. You don't really have a choice. I'm so sorry this happened to you
