Going CG without gel?

Hi guys!

I am going to try the CG method and I'm super excited! I already bought all the products I want to start out with (conditioner for co-wash, nourishing conditioner, leave in, curl creme). The only problem is that for some reason, my mom will absolutely not allow me to buy gel or even make my own gel! She's very traditional and says that gel can only be used to spike boy's hair and should not be used on girls hair. I have tried showing her several forums about the CG process and how gel is included, but she just won't budge. Also, I'm 14 so I can't go buy the gel myself, either.

Aaaanyway, is there anyway I could do the CG method without using gel? Would it make my curls less defined/more frizzy? I have mousse, if that can work as a substitute, but I don't know if it's CG friendly. It's Aussie Opposites Attract Strong Hold Mousse.
Hi Sami,
I just wanted to send you some encouragement. I'm sure the mousse would work but I'm not sure it's CG. Does it have any ingredient with the word ending in "cone" like dimethicone or amodimethicone? That indicates that it has a silicone product which means it isn't CG. That kind of product often needs to be washed out with a sulfate shampoo, or a "lo poo" like Deva Lo Poo. I know it is confusing at first!

I'm hoping the other curlies will chime in with suggestions of what you can use instead of a gel. I think some curlies used AG Recoil which is a fairly hard holding curl creme and they are able to use it without gel. The gel just makes the curls stay uniform and helps keep them from frizzing.

I'm awfully sorry that your mom feels that way - millions of girls and women use gel and they don't use it to spike their hair - but hey - she's your mom, so you need to respect her feelings.

Best of luck sweetie. I'll be watching to see what you post and hope all goes well for you.
2/c and some 3A. Modified CG.
Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Mix Curls in a Bottle into everything for shine. Terrible pj
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.
Every day is a gift
I had that same problem but then I went to the store with my friends and got some with my own money and started using it... Now months later my mom finally realized that I was using gel and didnt yell at me (waho!) you can also get curl creams or mousse like you said I don't know if your mousse has silicones or sulfate but to know for sure oh can fined it in curlmart and see if they say wether or not your mousse has silicones or sulfates. I would go with kinky murky curling custard because that is really popular and there are great reviews on curl art
Something I found to work well for me without using gel over it is the Shea Moisture Curling Souffle (even though that's what it's called, the application directions refer to it as a gel). This is the only store-bought product my hair will let me use without putting something else over the top. It smells delicious, it's all natural ingredients, and it's only I think $12 for a tub of it. I use it without a leave-in because the ingredients are already moisturizing, and I run some coconut oil (just a smidge or it looks greasy) over the top to help tame down my frizzies and soften my hair a little. I use the AG Recoil, but this is more like a cream and not so much like a gel. It doesn't give me any hold at all - it just separates my curls so they aren't clumpy. Kinky Curly Curling Custard might be good if you don't need much hold for your hair. I can't use this without gel, but some curlies with fine hair are able to.

If your mom would be willing to let you order something online that's a bit more expensive you might want to investigate the Curl Junkie line. The Aloe Fix is awesome and is another product I can use without anything else over the top. But it does say "gel" on the label and it's $22 brand new (but you can try checking the swap board if you are able, and maybe someone would be willing to sell for less). Curl Junkie's Curls in a Bottle has a light hold, but hold all the same. It's labeled as a "styling solution". I use it over all kinds of things to keep the frizz at bay.

Other things I have seen on the boards but haven't tried personally are Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper (available online), Mop-C Curl Cream (available at ULTA), Giovanni Air Turbo Mousse (available at Target, Walgreens, etc), Jason Curl Defining Cream (may be available at Walgreens, or available online), and Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control (available online). You could also try doing a google search for curl creams with hold to see if anything comes up that your mom might be OK with you trying out.

Hopefully that helps some and at least gets you headed in the right direction. Good luck and hang in there!
