Should I get my thick, curly hair thinned?

My hair is thick, and hard to do anything with! Wearing it the same way almost everyday makes my life boring. What would you recommend I do with it?

The first attachment, immagine my hair 3 inches longer...
The second attachment, immagine my hair a couple inches shorter...

No!

It's possible it could work for you, but every post I've read about anyone having their hair thinned was negative. It tends to look good immediately, but it's horrible when it's growing in.

I'd suggest instead leaving it the current length, and adding some long layers just to lighten it up a little bit. Especially in that longer haired picture, I can see how it would get heavy and weighing at times.

I think Net's on the money! Your hair is beautiful! Just needs a tiny tweak.

I've gotten my hair thinned twice, and it is AWFUL growing out. The thing is, when straight-haired people get their hair thinned, the shorter pieces just blend in with the rest of their hair. But with curly textures, the shorter pieces go OUTWARD and UPWARD. I seriously had a layer of frizz throughout my entire hair that was 1-2 inches sticking out of my hair. Its a frizz guarantee, even if your hair is healthy.

I suggest updating your hair routine before you go to the scissors!!!

My hair is similar to yours (although personally, I like yours better) Thinning it never worked, and although yours looks great the way it is, I understand the wanting a change thing. Due to hair boredom, I recently started getting my hair layered. It gives a different look while letting me keep my long hair. Thinning always made my hair look thicker and more poofy.

You have beautiful hair!

Absolutely DO NOT thin out your hair! Thick hair is beautiful and healthy, your hair will get thinner as you get older and you will regert not loving it now. I would suggest, if you're bored with it, maybe some cute, long layers and angled around your face. More of a style will make it lay less poofy- you don't need to thin it- and NEVER use a razor cut on curly hair. It will make it more firzzy.

I wish my hair was as thick as it was when I was a teen! Be thankful for what you have....

Had mine thinned once too, horrible! And it hurt. I don't think the hairdresser knew how to use the thinning shears. I had a pixie cut then and she basically ripped my hair out, saying it would look like a soccerfield otherwise. It did look awful that short that thick... that's why longer, non-thinned out hair (tried it all, believe me!) still is the lesser of two evils. And it looks way better.

I had stubbles in between my hair as it grew out... NEVER again. I had shorter hair last year, and I remember the hairdresser asking if she should thin it out a bit, I immediately answered, "Nooo!" That's how much I love thinning out hair.

I remember being 16 and having hair like you have in your signature (pic on the right). My hair gets very weighty at about bra strap length, but that's why I now swear by layers (long layers).

My hair looked very similar to yours when I wore it long. Trust me, do not have your hair thinned. Stylists used to thin mine all the time without asking me, and I had no idea what thinning was until another stylist brought it to my attention. With my hair, the thinned ends would flip outward as the hair grew, and the sides of my hair looked like wings or horns or something. Also, the thinning seemed to break up the curl pattern a bit. Once I stopped thinning, I got tighter curls and more clumps.

yeah last time i got my hair cut they thinned it out... not only did they thin it out but they also did it with a RAZOR! wow a night mare!

my hair now looks like it has horrible split ends and im always mosturising the ends completely

curlyarmo 04-29-2008 02:30 PM

your hair is really lovely!! i would NEVER get it thinned, i did a while back and my hair just grew back thicker and poofier than ever!! I would get layers if you wanted to get some of the bulk off, but if i were you i'd keep my hair like that!

Auburn Sunset 04-29-2008 02:34 PM

Absolutely not. Anyone that I have talked to about this method always had bad results afterwards. Your hair is pretty, don't do it.

auggie007 05-01-2008 03:48 PM

my hairdresser insists on thinning my hair. it is colored and a 4a. one week later i look like a lion. i don't know if it is better to let it grow long and wear it up. my daughters have long beautiful culs. when it is short it is kinky. any suggestions please

Fantastic1221 10-05-2012 07:59 AM

NO!

There are already a couple stories on this but I also got my hair thinned a year ago. Im 4a and my hair is still suffering from it. I have hair that is 13in long and then hair that is 2in long. The short hair tangles the long hair and its just ****ty, and poofy, and feels like it'll never be over. I almost contemplated BCing because of it.

gogohammy9 10-10-2012 09:07 AM

I had longish hair like yours.i tried thinning it and it didnt ok i me it even more frizzy. My hair also like, stopped growing so i cut it, to a shoulder leghtish bob, that was shorter i the back then in th front and it was less thick and eaiser to manage.:joker:

CurlyCutie1394 10-10-2012 09:28 AM

JessiesCurls 10-10-2012 07:05 PM

Don't do it! Your hair is beautiful as it is. :)

ElizabethFaith 10-10-2012 11:36 PM

No! Your hair is gorgeous! All you need is the right routine/products! Besides, one day you'll be thankful for your thick curls! (My mom always tells me that, lol!)

Curl hair thinned

My hair is extremely curly, it almost comes out as a fro. I'm half black and my mother is mixed. I want to thin my hair but I also want to make it longer. So it could be like chili's from TLC. Any suggestions on how to go about this? is this possible? should I even do this to my hair?
