The way I sleep is a combination of what everyone has said, somewhat:
1. Place a moisturizer on my hair, especially the ends, or a soft-medium hold gel.
2. Plop or do a pineapple with my hair in a satin or silk bonnet. The pillowcase didn't work for me.
3. Next morning--fluff, style, and if necessary, put more product or a little water in the hair. Essentially, if you've prepared your hair the night before, your time spent on it in the morning will be minimum.

I actually like my second day hair, but that's because I like the bed head look. My hair is 2b/c, so my issue is that it can look a little flat.
I don't do anything special except maybe put a few bobby pins in places where my hair tends to get messed up. I don't like sleeping in scrunchies or elastics because it damages my hair.

advice
The best thing for your hair as you sleep is a silk pillow case, im not so sure what it is but its seemed to help me.
i myself have personally trained myself to sleep perfectly and i usually am happy with my hair in the morning.
what i do is get a really wide toothed clip and take the front ends of my hair and clip it into it loosly just enough so it wont fall out and i clip it at the top of my head or on the crown of my head.
then i wont lay on any of my hair at all, ill lay on my side with my hair draped behind me if that makes any sence
hope this was of some help

I had the same problem. Sleep with your hair in one loose braid.

YAy!!! I do the same thing. I usually brush my hair with conditioner in it(of course with my fingers and not with a brush), put gel in my hair and then style. It only takes 5 minutes at the most(unless i had some really tangled mess), it's the styling that's the hardest for me since I'm so picky. Pineappling is ok for me, but I find can be more felxible if I just wet my hair to style.

To be honest, I don't think curls will ever look good after you sleep on it.
What I would do, is if you have "Wavy" hair, I'd put it in french braids, but make sure they're dry or else it'll have a musty smell in the morning because of dampness..
Or if you have curly hair, put it in a bun. It may be uncomfortable, but if you really do not want to wash your hair in the morning.
What I do though, is because I'm sooo lazy, I just sleep on it down, and use a curling iron in the morning so my curls look good again.
I don't know if that's good or not, but meh.

Ok, newbie here.
First of all, I have very frizzy 3c maybe 4a hair. I've tried pineappleing (my hair is not long enough and the bottom will fall out of the scrunchie and tangle), 2 loose braids (i get big ugly kinks and their not french style so its only from neck down ugly kinks), and just plain letting my hair be and sleeping on it ( a mess of tangles and frizz). I am a rowdy sleeper. I move all over and everything. I just end up showering each morning because i don't want to deal with it.
Second, I want to know from those of you who put product in your hair before bed... doesn't your pillow case get nasty? That reason is why i have never tried it. I don't like to have the stuff rubbing all over my face. But does it really work? is it worth it? should I just change pillow cases more often if I do this?

I hear you. I have similar hair and I move around a lot at night. I've given up showering at night because it's a disaster in the morning.
I've put a product of my hair before bed before though. It made it really soft, but my hair still looked far from presentable. I suppose in order to avoid it getting in your face, you'll have to clip/tie back your hair.
You can put a microfiber towel over your pillow (is it silk or satin?), otherwise, your hair shouldn't be that wet.

I sleep on my satin pillowcase with a silk scarf over it and I just let my hair loose, but having it loose OVER my pillow, so nothing will get flattened under my head.
The only two downfalls of my sleeping method is that the bottom layer of my hair is flat (i cut it shorter so it hides under my curls) and I can only fall asleep on my left, so my left side is kinda flatter, but that's nothing that spritzed water and an ORS mousse can't fix haha XD

I have short hair, shoulder length-ish and layered and I find that if I wash my hair at night and put a very little bit of product in it then the next morning I can wet it just a tiny bit and rescrunch it a little and it actually looks great. I think it actually sometimes looks fuller when I do it this way rather than shower in the mornign before school.

'Pineappling' does not work for me, buuut....
The pineapple thing makes my hair poof wayyy out when I take the scrunchy out in the morning. I don't recommend this for hair that already has a ton of volume, and is medium length. What helps for me is sleeping with wet hair. Also, if I don't have time in the morning to re-wet my hair (which is almost everyday, whatev's I'm lazy) I wear my hair in a beanie, and in about an hour or so when I take it off, my hair is flattened and behaving itself. This also works when I air dry in the morning, I always always wear a beanie on my way to work, and it behaves the whole rest of the day.
Never tried sleeping with a beanie, but I have curly friends (mostly guys) that do this and it works for them. Hmm maybe I should try that. & you should too!

How exactly do you steam your hair? I have been pineappling for 20 years, and last week I switched over to braiding. I think one braid in the back is counterproductive, since you'll be sleeping on it, so now I go to bed with two braids...ala Wednesday Addams or Willie Nelson. Except that both their hair is longer then mine!

What exctly is a beanie? I'm trying to find a bouffant stlye scrub cap, but in silk. No use in making silk pillowcases if you wear a hat to bed! How's the beanioe thing?

To be honest I haven't been appreciating my curls enough to have a routine that works. So I was really happy to find this post(:
I take a shower at night since everyone else in my family gets them in the morning and I don't like the idea of going to sleep dirty. I've been trying to sleep on my back with my hair fanned over my pillow case.
I'm definetly going to try plopping and a satin pillowcase.
I saw some of you were confused as to what the pineapple and plopping are or you had trouble fitting them to your hair. Waterlily716 on youtube has some videos on youtube that would probably help you, and give a nice visiual!
