The Hunger Games

Has anyone read these? Since I got a Kindle, I've been devouring books, and I'm especially enjoying these.

I'm kind of surprised, because I was totally turned off by the description, and even a little disgusted. But I kept reading awesome reviews, and it was 5 dollars, so I figured I'd give it a try. Now I'm addicted! I'm almost done with the second book.

I realize that they're technically YA, but that never stopped anyone from enjoying Twilight.

But it will not steal your substance

I read them. I really enjoyed the first one and raced through it. (I hate violent/horror/gore but these got so many great reviews that I decided to give them a shot). The second book was good enough- could have been better I felt, and the third one was a big disappointment.

The main character never seemed to grow/develop and by the end of the third one all the characters had been butchered imo (not to put you off or anything!). Its such a shame because I felt the author had set up such an intriguing storyline that really could have been great. But the third book in particular felt like the author had either run out of ideas, or it was rushed by publishers.

Still, many people love all three so its def worth seeing them through to the end.
Wow! You were right. She ruined everything!

I recommended the books to my friend, and now I might tell her to only read the first two! lol

I can definitely see how the 3rd book could be considered a let down... and parts of it were, for me. I 100% agree with the growth of the main character. I expected more from her than hiding in closets.

However... I've also never cried as hard at a book as I did at the end of that one. It was right up there with HP 6 and Dumbledore's death, but I honestly think I might have lost it a little more...

Even though the third book was a let down, I still recommend the series to people. Still a really good book series. i think I read somewhere that the story was being made into a movie?

Oh I still recommend it to people - the first book and even the second are too good to miss imo

I'll admit I didn't cry at the end. By that point I felt so fed up and manipulated by the author and annoyed with the characters that I didn't particularly care anymore. Which is sad.

A movie could be very good I think, if they do it well. And perhaps (not necessarily with the first book but afterwards) if they have good writers develop the story further and push it past the books. Although it could easily become a far too gory movie for me lol
They are in development to turn The Hunger Games into a movie. There's been lots of casting speculation going around but I think they are trying to go with relative unknowns (which is good for this type of thing I think).

I really like all 3 books. I agree that Katniss didn't grow much, but I wasn't really expecting her to actually. I didn't much like the ending though. It seemed too......easy I guess is the word I'm looking for. There were a few times I did want to smack her and scream "wake up!!" but overall Katniss was very resistant to change through the whole series. Prim turned out to be the much more adaptable character.

It wasn't that Katniss didn't grow, is that she seemed to go backwards. She had all this character and strength in the first book, and most of the second, but the third she turned into this useless, moaning, pathetic person I just wanted to slap her and say get your backside in gear and do something for christ sake.

She was all woe is me and it really got on my t*ts after like, 5 pages. And it got worse and worse throughout the book!

Peeta I really liked, and he had an interesting, complex story in the third book, (though how long did it take them to go rescue them!) but it felt glossed over and too easily resolved (Katniss just wandered off and forgot about him) and I felt it would have been so much more interesting if the author had focused on that and their relationship recovering, and have Katniss fighting for him.

The other guy (supposedly a love triangle but it never really went anywhere) turned into this nasty, horrible person. I actually liked the twist that his device got Prim killed and thought that was a very interesting concept, where do you draw the line in war and wanted katniss to form an opinion and stand up and fight for it, but (again) she just seemed to wander around aimlessly and let the people around her do what they liked to her and everyone else. But his character was completely butchered and it could have been done so much more subtly. In the end he just disappears, there's not even a goodbye between them.

I like that she chose Petra, but it didn't seem likely after everything she had done/thought in the book. I didn't sense that she actually liked him that much. The end few pages were definitely a cop out I felt.

loved these books. the villains were great and the effete capitol people were interesting, as well as the main characters. i wish there were some good dogs in the books tho and was sorry about prim's fate--i think katniss was traumatized by her experiences and was immobilized in many areas, despite this tho she manages to function well enough to get thru. sometimes that is the best we can do.. peeta and gale were both somewhat one dimensional i thought but it did not ruin the books for me at all...

not the most romantic of ways to choose a partner, but I get it I guess. It's kind of like Frodo not being able to stay with the rest of the hobbits... he was just too changed to be around people who weren't changed the same way.

I do agree with your frustration with her in the last book though. I think the author was TRYING for realism (cuz lets face it... we'd all have lost it FAR sooner than she did) but it didn't delve far enough into her emotions to really achieve that. Instead, it felt like a cop out bc we didn't fully understand what she was going through and it just looked like she was moaning and being stupid constantly.

Gale's part was most definitely a cop out at the end. It had potential in the second book to really develop into a viable choice for a relationship. but you're right, he's fairly repulsive... too blood thirsty, and there's no way she could have been with him even if he HADNT done what he did to Prim (unintentionally).

I loved those books! I own all three. I like the plot, the characters (well, not all of them, but I liked what happened with them, and such), etc.

I LOVED ALL OF THEM! i really loved the story and characters and i thought the series was possibly my favourite!
I ADORE these books, and can see both sides of loving/hating the last book...I was pleased with her choice at the end, and it was very emotional and realistic seeing her go back to "normal life" but it never becomes truly normal ever again. I thought Katniss did turn pretty *****y at the end, and with there had been more closure with Gale. I felt she put ALL the blame for Prim's death on his shoulders and that wasn't fair, he didn't do it on purpose! I did like that the message of war and the sick pleasure of people viewing it wasn't toned down..especially in the first book I had the creepiest feeling of how easily we could turn into Panem. I think the movie will be incredible!!

Just started the first one a few days ago for a book club and I'm hooked! (I didn't read the posts that contained spoilers) What are the names of the 2nd and 3rd books, because I plan on reading those after I finish this one.
Even though it's marketed as YA, it doesn't read or feel like typical YA material, which I appreciate.

On a slightly different note, someone suggested Hailee Steinfeld as Katniss for the movie version... I 100% agree.

I do not like Hailee as Katniss, she is too young. Granted I haven't seen "True Grit," maybe I will change my mind once I see it. I am in love with the idea of Chloe Moretz as Katniss, but again, too young.

I would like for them to go with some unknowns.

Re the books, I have read books 1 and 2. Very slim chance I will be reading book 3- this is what happens when you read spoilers.
I ain't thirsty. There's plenty of fish in the sea, but I don't want all of them, can I have some standards? Or do we just have to settle, for someone's who meh and will do.
