A couple of years ago one of my teachers spoke about a book that I would like to read. Note that some of the details may be slightly off and it may be a short story/ play/ poem instead of a book.

It involves a small village/town in which all the people of the town confess their sorrows, joys, crimes, etc to the town "mute". Since he/she can not talk to purge his feelings/thoughts like eveyone else, the weight of everyone's emotions finally crushes him.

I would really like to read the book. My teacher has since retired and therefore I can not ask her the title because I have no way of reaching her. Does this sound familiar to anyone??

Sounds a bit like What the Deaf Man Heard?

I've seen the movie...with Matthew Modine...and it was based on a book.

I just Googled your suggestion, but I don't think this is what I was talking about. The way my teacher talked about it, the book had a darker feel...

It looks interesting though and deals with the same premise. I might get this book instead until I can find the other one.

This sounds like it could be it. And if not, at least I have two new book suggestions for the time being until I can figure out if it is!

I'll probably be able to tell if it's the book when I actually start reading it.
