Official Harry Potter Thread-w/movie spoilers
So apparently I'm not the only Harry Potter freak. Let's have an ongoing Harry Potter thread to discuss anything related to the books/movies!
I'll start.
Hugh Grant was the first choice for Professor Lockheart in CoS. Do you think Branagh was better suited for the role? I do!
Do you think Arthur Weasley is going to end up Minister of Magic before the series is over?
Who does Luna like, Ron or Harry? And do you think she has any connection to Professor Lupin?

Re: Official Harry Potter Thread
I'm a HP freak too! Okay...I DEFINITELY think Hugh Grant would've been much better for the role of Lockheart. I'm watching the movie right now (coincidence!) and I think Branagh is ugly. The whole point is that Lockheart is supposed to be GOODLOOKING. However, he did play the cocky attitude well.
About Arthur Weasley...I don't know. Its almost a guess at whether he will be the minister of magic. It would be AWESOME if he did though!
I guess I'm a bad fan because I don't remember who Luna is...someone enlighten me!
Anyways...something I definitely think will happen is Ron+Hermione! They sooo love each other.
BTW I went to the Barnes & Noble party the night book 5 came out. It was sooo much fun. We did have to wait until 1 am though b/c of the order they handed out books...it was crazy, there was like 1000 people there!

Re: Official Harry Potter Thread
I just can't see Hugh Grant successfully being that cocky and overconfident, since usually plays bumbling and lacking confidence.
I think Arthur will be MoM because of a book 5 comment. Ron said something to the effect of "We have as good a chance of winning the quidditch cup as my dad has of being named Minister of Magic!" Somehow, when Ron makes those statements, they seem to come true.
Luna's the crazy girl with the father who has his trash paper which ran Harry's article.
I went to a Borders party. My similarly HP crazy friend and I were out and decided to just head over. We had both ordered from Amazon.com, but decided it would be fun to go to the party, and I ended up giving my mom the amazon.com book. I started reading the book as my friend drove back to her house, and we took turns reading out loud for about an hour after that before we had to go sleep.

I think Luna and Harry will be either more than friends, or at least really good friends - they both have lost people and are both some what of outsiders and I think they can relate to each other, but Harry and Ginny would be cool too.
The official trailer is available on the HP website and the dementors look awesome, but the Hogwarts Choir?! WTF? Some screen writer apparently didn't read the books, but still, the movie should be awesome. Book Three is my favorite.

Reason #1 working is better than school.
Getting paid instead of paying (after college) is reason #2.

possible spoilers
truer words were never spoken.
this is the same reason why i haven't gotten around to reading those books. as soon as i've memorized all my orgo, i'm totally there
i did love the movies though. kenneth branagh i felt was better than hugh grant b/c he is bumbling and lacks confidence. i don't know if i would say branagh is ugly--just not overly so.
did anyone watch the deleted scenes in the chamber of secrets where the kids are talking about how frightened they are of harry? i think that whole series should have been left in, b/c it would have made the scene where he's talking to the snake make more sense. otherwise it just seems like he randomly picks the boy out of the crowd.

I love Harry Potter!! I think the books will probably end happily, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Arthur Weasley becomes Minister of Magic.
What do you all will think will happen with Percy? I think he is too proud and probably too embarrassed to apologize to his family. Maybe he’ll become a Deatheater.
I definitely think Luna is after Ron. NetG, why do you think Luna and Lupin might have a connection?
I will be really disappointed if movie #3 strays too far from the book. I hate when they change a story line for the movie. I never understood that. If the book is good enough to make a movie out of, then it doesn’t need to be changed.

My brother didn't pick up on Luna's interest in Ron until the second time around, when he noticed her saying she wouldn't have minded if he hadn't danced with *her* at the dance in their first conversation.
I think Luna and Lupin might have a connection because of the names-Luna, moon, and Moony. That, and Ginny says the call her Loony Luna Lovegood, and Peeves called Lupin Loony Loopy Lupin. I doubt that's just an accident.

Does anyone remember that moment (God, I can't remember which book it was in ... 3, maybe?) when Dumbledore was described as having a strange look in his eye when he was with Harry? I want to love & trust Dumbledore and I do for the most part, but this moment haunts me.

The triumphant look was at the end of book 4 when he found out Voldemort was back and had used Harry's blood to come back. I think it's because it makes him mortal, but we'll see.....

Oooh, you're on top of things - great memory - yes, I'm curious as to whether this look means anything - it just left me very unsettled.

Read the books enough times, and you, too, can remember this!
Actually, it's more due to one of the HP websites I go to on occasion. They've had articles discussing that quote. I think the general consensus was "who knows what Rowling's really thinking-it'll be fun to find out!"

Re: Official Harry Potter Thread
Yes, Branagh was much better suited to the role.
I actually don't think he will become Minister of Magic. I think that, instead, Fred and George's magic shop will do really well. Mrs Weasley will find out about the shop and be furious, but once it does well the Weasleys will be rich, and will finally have no more money problems.
Luna likes Ron, but will become closer to Harry as good friends because of their connection of both losing people. I also think Luna will prove to be a more major character (sorry for the bad grammar!) as the story unfolds.
Hee! I love Harry Potter! My turn to ask a question:
Do you think Sirius will continue to be an important character through that curtain/veil-y thing in the Ministry of Magic? (Please say yes! I love[d] Sirius and cried so, so much when he died. )

NetG, what sites do you look at? My two faves are IGNFORMEN, which has photos from Movie #3, and Schnoogle.com, which is other people writing HP stories. Some are GREAT.

I go to The Harry Potter Lexicon, The Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet. I also read the Psychic Serpent series, which is partially listed on Schnoogle, but I go to the Yahoo site for it.

Woohoo..more ways for me to waste time when I could be doing something productive!
I think Sirius will remain involved in the books in some way.
Here's a question, maybe I missed something: In book 5 when Harry had the dream that Sirius was being tortured in the Ministry of Magic, he freaked out and snuck into that woman's office to use her fireplace to try to contact Sirius. Later, after it's all over, he comes across the gift Sirius had given him and sees that it's a 2-way mirror. So really, he could have used that to contact Sirius, and then he never would have gone to the MOM and Sirius wouldn't have died. Did he forget about the mirror? He broke it after he realized he couldn't contact Sirius in the world beyond, so it's not even now a memento. What was the point of including this detail in the book? Any ideas?

I think there was some reason for it, beyond the simple "Harry's human and makes stupid mistakes" thing. I'm just not sure what it'll be. I think it means Harry *will* make contact with Sirius somehow, someway.

To me, I think the point of including it was to emphasise the saddness of Sirius' death. Not only was it Harry's fault (not really, but that's what he thinks) for believing the "false" dreams, but also if he had only opened the present of the mirror and used that, then Sirius would still be alive. *Sob*. I think it's basically just there to signify how the smallest little detail could've saved a life. I hope that he fixes the mirror, though, and contacts Sirius through that. Surely it could still contact his spirit? I mean, if his mother's spirit can live through a painting, then surely he can live through the mirror or that veil/curtain thingy.

I think Branagh was perfect as Lockhart, exactly the image in my mind as I read the book. Gilderoy Lockhart was gorgeous golden blond man---I think Hugh Grant would look hideous as a blond with his coloring and Branagh nailed the pompous attitude.
Dumbledore---I really thought he was going to be the one to die in OOTP rather than Sirius. I still don't think he's safe; there seem to be these dark overtones to him in the last book. I suspect he may not survive til year 7.
Loony Luna/Lupin connection....hmmmm. Hadn't thought of that before. Luna may like Ron, but she's got no chance---he's going to end up with Hermione (just think how thrilled Arthur will be to have a muggle-born daughter-in-law). As far as Harry's lovelife I'm still holding out hope for Cho to come around, even though she seriously annoyed me in OOTP.
I really hope Book 6 has more Hagrid---I just didn't get enough of a fix from OOTP.
