It might be a little more fantasy but i really liked Someplace to be Flying by Charles De Lint.

I just finished A Time Odyssey Trilogy - Arthur C. Clark and Stephen Baxter - Time's Eye, Sunstorm and Firstborn.
Really neat concept and not as odd as some of Stephen Baxter's stuff can be.

Have you read any Octavia Butler? I can't find anyone who even comes close to her style. I'm also excited that Margaret Atwood has a new book coming out this fall. The Handmaid's Tale is one of my favorites.

I had to read Octavia Butler's Kindred in school. It was a really good book, not too science fictiony for me. I couldn't really get into any of her other books though. I am reading The Handmaid's Tale and it is also really good. It is written very well.

HERE! RIGHT HERE! Huge fantasy and sci-fi fan, my whole life.
How has Orson Scott Card not been mentioned yet? For shame~
Pretty much anything he has written is a blast to read. Ender's Game was good, but there's so much more he's written that's excellent. The Lost Gate was good as well, but that's more fantasy.
Anne McCaffery is a top sci-fi writer. Her Dragonriders of Pern is an excellent read as well, but it gets a bit slow and political as the series carries on. The City Who Fought and The Ship That Searched are also excellent books. They both take place in her 'shellperson' universe, where people who would normally die in infancy due to genetic defects are instead put into a "shell" that supports all their bodily needs while their mind is connected to thousands or even millions of electrical systems, such as a space ship, space station, even a capital city on a planet! The 'shellpeople' as they're called, are totally dependent upon the mechanical shell to support them, but they are like technological gods -- better, smarter, and faster than any AI. I love this series. I wish she'd write more of them.

I just saw this thread and Orson Scott Card came first to mind. I enjoyed "Ender's Game". I have yet to read the sequels.

I'm an AM fan too and liked the Brainships/Shellpeople books as well. They're all pretty good but each one is different because she collaborates with different authors. Brainships | Series | LibraryThing
Do you know she passed in November? Now it's all up to Todd I guess but he's not nearly as good.

oooh.. I'm a huge sci-fi fan. there's just so many so I'll only list a couple for now since I'm not sure anyone is still checking this thread.
Pretty much anything by Philip K. Dick - a good portion of sci-fi movies are based on his stories (ex. Minority Report, Paycheck, Blade Runner, Total Recall, Screamers, A Scanner Darkly (that one verged on Pahlaniuk-esque which isn't necesarilly bad)). The movies rarely stay true... though I'll be honest, Paycheck is the only movie I've ever seen that I liked better than the book. Considering it starred Ben Affleck that's even more surprising... anyhow...
Ender's Game has been mentioned already but is worth the read along with other classics like 1984 and Farenheit 451 and Brave New World. And of course Dune.
The Dark Tower Series by Steven King is actually in the sci-fi/fantasy realm and is probably my favorite series.
If you're more into like giant space battles and such there's always the Battlemech/Mech Warrior books...
I'll stop for now. let me know if anyone wants more LOL

Back on Cones,so now my routine is,wash with Deva No-Poo every other day or so. Occasionally use 365 sulfate free,maybe use low sulfate shampoo mixed with conditioner once every two weeks are longer. I condition with Aussie Moist or HEHH. I style with a little GF TN,and finish up with tons of GN Pure Clean Smoothing Cream. No frizz...slippy, happy hair.
