How much do y'all like the private messages feature? How much do you use it? I'm considering disabling it because people can't figure out how to use it correctly in that you can't just hit reply and respond. I get many, many misdirected msgs that end up going to the webmaster address. I end up having to respond to them all, telling the sender they misdirected the PM, etc. It's making me batty.
What do y'all think?

Really?

Well, for what it's worth Gretchen, I think it's very easy to use! I love the option of being able to send/receive PM's. Everything is right there in your profile. If someone was able to register, then PM's I think, are on the same level of, in my opinion simplicity. I don't always like to go through my email. It just depends on who I am talking to. At first I really wasn't sure, but since I have been using it, I just love it! I never realized that you had to do all that; but I guess that comes with the moderator responsibility, right? I'd love to help out in any way that I can. I'm always doing that on the board any way. I know, I know, I spend way to much time at this place!

Any other curlies have views?

As usual, Wile e and I are sharing the same brain! I totally agree with her, Gretchen. I really like using private messaging, especially when I'm not comfortable giving out my e-mail address to someone.

Ob: AOL

me too!

with the project, it's been the best way for me to have people contact me.

is there some way to make the webmaster address on that screen go to another address? that way you'd know where it came from and could send a canned response.

I think it's easy to use and have never had a problem with it. I don't think it should be disabled. I use a "dummy" e-mail address in my profile for this site. It's just a free Lycos account I use when I register for anything online, only because I don't want the world to have access to my personal e-mail account. I check the dummy e-mail account RARELY, so there is no other quick way for someone to contact me besides PM's.

I love the PM feature.
I know I have screwed up a couple of thoughtless times and replied to the email- bad Spunky bad bad! But I haven't in a while and I don't think it's that hard to figure out.

Would there be a way to disable the email notification because that seems to be the problem. If one just goes up to "my profile" it would be impossible to mess up- right? Or maybe I am mistaken- in any case I really like this feature- it's useful when you don't have another user's email address

Ok; I'll leave it. People will just have to understand that if they don't get a reply, it's likely that the responder missent. I can't resend every one.

Thanks for your input!

Ok, maybe I'm doing this wrong ... but I see a little link that says "Send Reply". Isn't that what I am supposed to click to send a response?

Oh wait, I just reread....people are responding to that EMAIL...ok. I think I'm doing it right then . I respond from the website.

I have had one mishap with PM and that was when I responded to the Pm from my email and it went to the Postmaster. I love the PM option. Maybe you could disable the email notice and still keep the PM's. Just a thought. The only thing that makes PM confusing is when I get a PM in my email account and My natural reaction is to respond by hitting reply. That is my 2 cents worth.

I like them.

But I have a stupid question, if you want to keep the info in the PM, instead of hitting reply, can you do the 'send new PM' thing? that's not messing up the PMs, is it?

I don't use PM's much, but I do like them and I really like the e-mail notification feature. The only thing I don't like about them is that they disappear after you send them. I can understand that it's probably an automatic housecleaning feature, but it would be nice to be able to save a long PM somewhere for future reference.

That's my two cents, where's my change?

Hmmm...I think I was guilty of sending a PM notification back to Gretchen once. I don't normally use the Private Message feature, so I'm not that familiar with it. When someone did PM me a couple months ago the notification came to my email address, so I read it and just sort of automatically hit reply. Being the highly intelligent person that I am , I immediately realized my mistake and emailed Gretchen to apologize.
I think many people hit "reply" thinking they are replying to the PM, when they are actually replying to the NOTIFICATION that they have a PM. Maybe the notification should say "PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL BY PRESSING YOUR REPLY BUTTON, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A RESPONSE BY DOING SO." in gigantic letters at the top of it?

mousedroid, the last person to receive the message has the WHOLE thing . SO don't be the last one to respond and you can keep it, hehehehe.

Gretchen,

Is there any way to disable the e-mail notification? From what I understand, the e-mail notification (and the subsequent replies) are the problems; not the PM's themselves...

Just my thoughts...

Thanks for all you do for us!

I like the PM's.. I don't care to make my email address public for just any one passing throug to get, but love to get messages from folks on the board.

I seem to remember there being a checkbox in the profile about whether or not you want to receive email notification for PMs. Instead of disabling the entire feature, maybe you should just encourage people to check no, so those who only remember to check for PMs when they receive emails about them can still do so.

I dont undestand why when I send a PM and hit reply the original message disappears? Especially when you are doing swaps you need to be able to have a trail of the PM convo. Is there any way in which you turn that feature off?

I dont know what kind of email system you have, but maybe you can set up a separate email box where emails with the same header will go to this box. Then you can create an autoresponse email for emails with this header.
