No root curl.....how to fix?
I am having problems with having no root curl on the top of my head. I want to have curl all the way from the root to the end. Not have curl start about an inch away from the root. Anyone have any suggestions besides clipping? I plop, use lighter products near the root, hang my head over in the shower to apply product, and if I diffuse, (I have a great diffuser) then it frizzs. When I clip it pulls my hair and hurts. So I can tell it breaks. I am almost to the point of going back to my sulfate shampoo (Bain De Terre Green Meadow) and my Nexxus Condish (Humectress). My husband says my hair looked better to him that way, but it was dry and tangled easily, but it was not frizzy! I used Biosilk oils and HE Totally Twisted and it was curled from the root and looked great, but I really hate to waste all this I have bought. Plus my hair does feel better and is not so tangled. Help!

Oh my hair is super long so that may be part of the problem but......
My hair is long, an inch away from lower back and thick, so it may be pulling down, so that may be part of the problem, if so can anyone relate? And tell me how you got better curl at the root?

Hmm, maybe try layers? My hair just doesn't curl much there, but I think it has to do with my hair type, and yours is different. But before cutting, try some other options. Idk what though...

I've tried just about everything to get root curl and volume up top - and nothing seems to work. Clipping just about did, but it looked WEIRD. Some curl types just don't get much root curl, and even some who should have root curl don't get it. It is strange that you used to have it but no longer do.
I will say, however, that sometimes KCCC can weigh hair down somewhat - it's part of its charm. Perhaps you need to switch to a different gel/curl creme?
Also, I've noticed that you only joined in Feburary - how long exactly have you been doing CG? Oily roots and lack of root curl are not uncommon in the first month or so of CG. Your hair goes into shock at being allowed its natural oils. Perhaps wait it out longer?
Also, CG isn't for everyone - it is possible to go mod-CG and see where that leaves you. There's nothing wrong with sulfates so long as you keep the moisture level high.

I am sort of a modified CG.........I think! lol
I have been CG since January 2010, so this is the third month. I am kind of modifying it to fit my hair though, like everyone does for their hair type. I have found, that just like looks, everyone's hair is SO different, even if you are a fellow curly. I do wash with a sulfate free shampoo - the KC Come Clean once a week. My hair just needs that cleaning I believe. I have the JC Cleansing Cream that I use mid week (Wed.), and in between I spritz with lavendar water made from the recipe in the CG book, and apply product as needed. It depends on how my hair looks after the spritz as to what I put on (eg. HE TT, JC RR, or JC CC). When I wash with the KC Come Clean, I use the KC Knot Today just on the ends and on the underside at the nape, not on top, and do "mysteryflavored's" technique to applying the KCCC, so it is not over done. I plop, then apply just a smidge of HE Totally Twisted to it for some body.
I am trying the wiki answer's description of "jaw clipping" on the canopy at the root to see what happens and it seems like this may be the answer. I hope so, I love how healthy my hair feels, but it is discouraging to not have the hair that got me so many compliments before going mod-CG!

Got those but not from a Deva stylist, have an appt soon tho!
Thanks xodevin, I did. I am hoping that my new appt. with a Deva stylist might give me some more root curl, but like I said above, I am jaw clipping and that might do what I want. I hope so. Your hair is really pretty though. I like how you have yours cut!

Modification is good - there's never just one way to do it. :-) Where'd you find this jaw clipping idea - I've not heard of it?

I have the exact same problem as the OP and I've just accepted that my roots will never be as curly as they once where years ago (hair changes w/ age), and I've learned to work with it. I avoid heavy stylers and apply my products away from my roots. I've also found that a periodic shot of wheat protein will help my roots curl better. Otherwise, I try not to take it too seriously.

Spritz & Condish
Before you give up why don't you try the Spritz & Condish method:

This is my answer to everything! My hair is much shorter than yours, but I have root curl where I used to have none. And, you won't have to buy anything new

Like WW4C I find Spritz & Condish is the best method and I also do Icequeen's method - these two methods along with using high quality products (such as many found at Curlmart) have transformed my hair. Also, check out Struttswife's e-book. Paying attention to dew points helps a lot too!
Good luck!

I get root curl by doing my final rinse upside down and applying product upside down. The final rinse is the key. I always apply product upside down but if I dont rinse upside down no root curl.

I always get root curl (first day, for sure, and pineappling takes some out by second day, but not all).
How:
1. Supersoaking in the shower with lots of water right to root of scrunched hair
2. Scrunching hard up to the root with a floursack towel. and I mean HARD, getting the towel right up in there and pushing with my hand UP (while upside down) to get the root involved. (I add EXTRA gel to roots at crown, not less, to hold what curl takes hold).
3. Using octopus and jaw clips right on crowns at root, lifting very gently to set, so as the hair dries, the weight of hair doesn't pull/stretch out the root curl. This also adds height, btw.
I have not had a problem getting root curl this way.

Since you have thick, long hair using mysteryflavored's method of KCCC application may not be the best for your hair. You may be better off sectioning your hair and smoothing products through each section. If you aren't getting the KCCC applied to all of your hair, you could certainly get some frizz. Once you've applied your products, flip your head upside down and scrunch. This really helps me with root curl, however my hair is really short. I also diffuse upside down, which gives me root curl and volume. If you search "consistently awesome hair technique", that's how I apply my products, and it works every time for me.
