Product Overload!!

How do you know which is the best curl product for you when all of them guarantee frizz-free, crunch free, amazing curls? I've tried many of them: Curlisto, Ouidad, DevaCurl, Brocato, etc., and you know what? They're all about the same. I've been doing the no-poo method for nearly two weeks and I'm not sure my hair looks better or not!

In my view, it's more important HOW you style and what the weather's like outside, than any miracle shampoo, conditioner or styling gel. If it rains and it's windy, it really doesn't matter what I've put in my hair. It's going to get frizzy and wild. In the heat, it's going to grow in volume.

Seriously, I'm beginning to wonder if all these curl products are just a marketing ploy. I think I'm going to choose my products in the future based on how they smell, to be honest. DevaCurl works somewhat better than Ouidad, but I can't stand that "baby aspirin" orangey smell of the products have. What about manufacturing an unscented product?

And no poo method is making my head itch. I may break down in a few days and go back to shampooing my hair like a normal person.
There are several threads about product vs technique. Most of us agree that it's a combination of the two. I, personally, found a big difference among products--I thought both the Deva and Quidad products I tried were pretty unremarkable. I prefer the products from the "boutique" companies. I don't buy very few drugstore or salon products--I do feel that a lot of marketing is behind those products. I think products like Curl Junkie and Spiral Solutions have a lot of "informed study" behind them. As Marsha would say, it's not only quality ingredients--it's formulation.

I cowashed for six months--and my curl was okay. When the natural soap bars were popular, I used one that I had sitting around for two months and was afraid to try. All I can say is WOW. I'm still using them 18 months later. Only cowash I use is the CJ Daily Fix. I tried it and it's great. I use it twice a month because it has a chelating ingredient. My water is a 3 our of 4, so I think it's good to do something to remove any mineral buildup every so often.

You have to do what works for you.

I researched to see if my area has hard water, and the various hard water maps were very contradictory. I finally went with the decision that I have hard water based on the film on my shower doors!

I have since stopped using shower water for my hair and am only using distilled water. It's kind of a pain in the neck, but the results are amazing! I also did a clarifying shampoo to get rid of all the buildup, and then did a DT right after.

I just bought a shower filter and am waiting for it to arrive! Hoping it works, b/c washing my hair at the sink while I pour a bowlful of water over it is kind of a pain in the neck.

Oh, and for the original poster...if your scalp is starting to itch, are you giving your scalp a good scrub when you co-wash? There are also some remedies/recipes that you can try...there are probably some in the recipes section. Hope that helps!
