Default Please take the HAIRSPRAY away from me!!!

Hello Everyone! So pretty much my hair sucks haha lol that' s the best way I can put it right now. So anyways no gel and I mean NO GEL is giving me crunch!!! This all started happening when I moved to college where the water also sucks because its hard! So to get some crunch/hold I've been using HAIRSPRAY which is really bad!!! But I don't know any other way to get any hold anymore!!! Gah I want to stop using the hairspray because I know its bad for my hair! I just don't get why absolutely NOTHING is giving me any crunch or hold! Even when I used hairspray it gives me crunch but my curls turn out like crap because they are all wiry and wispy and sometimes all of the crunch doesn't scrunch out! Can you all please help me because I'm seriously at wits end with my hair I've pretty much tried EVERYTHING! Ok sorry my small rant is over haha

Your subject line made me giggle.

Now, to your issue:

1. Got a pic?
2. How often do you deep treat condish and when was your last protein deep treatment?
3. Can you get a shower water filter?
4. When was the last time you clarified?
5. How long since you tried new/rotated products?
6. Did the change coincide with the warmer and higher dewpoint weather of spring or did it look like that in winter, too?

Those answers might help folks help you, plus a pic.

1. Sorry I wish I could take a picture and put it on here but my USB cord for my camera that I brought to school is the wrong one
2. I used to do deep treatments on my hair every once in awhile but now I like never do them because I feel with the water here that if my hair is conditioned and not dried out then I get now volume. (The mask I used to use is this one here http://www.sleekhair.com/25617.html) I don't know if it has protein in it or not but if not any good protein treatment recommendations?
3. I unfortunately cannot have a water filter because I live in the dorms (I've also been noticing these same problems when I go home and I have soft water there)
4. The last time I clarified was probably a month or so ago cause I got into the habit of clarifying my hair everyday to dry it out so I would just have some volume
5. I usually use the same stuff (in my siggie) and it has worked for me for the 2 years I've been CG. As a poor college student I don't really have the money to buy new stuff (I also don't have the patience to test out/try new stuff but if I absolutely have to to get my hair to look good I wouldn't be opposed)
6. I actually switched colleges this semester but first semester I was having the same problems. First semester though I started clarifying and that made things a lot better. Here though I have clarified and it's done nothing. The water at the college I go to now is worse than my old college. But, at the beginning of this semester when it was winter I was having the same problems as now in spring.

I wonder if buying purified water and rinsing a final rinse with that would help?? Or, as a more work-intensive resort, purify enough water with a water filter to use for shampooing. Only use the dorm showers for skin/neck down, and wash your hair in the sink with purified water you can accumulate from a pitcher in your dorm room/or bottled water (if you have the moolah).

Also, I notice you're trying CJ products. Is this still so? If so, then why not drop by Marsha's blog ( curljunkie.blogspot.com) and ask her if any CJ regimen would help/counteract the issues you have.

I think I remember reading that the Daily Fix had chelating properties. Let me look it up:

Here--read Alex JouJou's comment after the post: http://thewavytales.blogspot.com/201...cleansing.html

But Marsha really likes to help people choose the right products for their particular issues, and she might respond with something REALLy helpful. Worth a shot.

My fave protein fix is in my siggie, btw.

Now, as far as choosing condition versus volume, I hear ya. I hate having flat hair. But if you keep using drying agents/products, eventually it will affect the quality of hair overall. There is a price to pay for using drying agents for volume.

Nope. But I can theorize on the spot: Maybe you have so much build-up from hard water and/or products that it's acting like wax/oil...subduing the crunch the way heavy moisturization might.

I think you may want to edit your subject so that it indicates you want feedback as to what is causing your hair not to crunch. While your subject line is cute, it's not specific, and people might just assume you're ranting about hairspray, and not actually seeking advice.

Worth a shot?

Default Spritz & Condish

Okay, my answer for everything is to use the DEL2C Spritz & Condish method. If you do a search you'll find loads of info but here are the basics:

Wet your hair with a spray bottle before you get in the shower to wash your hair. Add a moisturizing conditioner to your wet hair and let it soak in for 10 minutes or so. Then proceed as usual with washing your hair.

I thought this might make a difference for you because this method is supposed to keep your hair from absorbing so much water in the shower. It might protect your hair from some of the damaging effects of the tap water. And, what if you spritzed with purified water instead of the tap water?

Also, one of the side effects for me of using this method is that my hair tolerates hair spray so much better. I like to use some hairspray (cg safe) at times, and I am now able to without my hair getting crispy.

That's a very good point. I always do a S&C--thanks Del!--because I'm porous and I'm dry. My hair is so much better moisturized than...EVER! It does make a difference.

And since your issue is hard hair, doing the S&C WITH PURIFIED WATER and a nice condish will protect it, I'm sure, from your local water.

You could also do a final rinse with purified water (ie, use purified water first int he S&C with a spray bottle, wash in shower as normally would, then do a final rinse with purified water), to counteract that hard water.

But if you suffer from dryness/porosity, the S&C is a godsend.

WillWork4Curls, you hairstyle is AMAZING. Love it. Wish I could work the shorter hair (but my fat neck and steroid-induced buffalo hump sort of put the kibosh on that. I just love how it works with your curl and face. beautiful.)

Try adding 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to an 8 ounce bottle of non / low sulfate shampoo.... Deep Condition, use your KCKT and KCCC as usuall..
If your water is really hard at college the vinegar will help clean up residues....
