First time trying CJ products

After reading up on the popular products around the board these days, I got some samples of lots of the CJ products and the Spiral Solutions products. Everything arrived today and I had to try some of it out immediately (of course)...

Here is the routine I tried:
Poo: Shampoo Bar
Rinse Out Condish: Curl Junkie Curl Assurance Smoothing Daily Hair Conditioner
Leave-in: Curl Junkie Coffee-Coco Curl Creme-Lite (dime to nickle sized blob) on soaking wet hair
Plopped for 5 mins in flour sack towel
Gel: Curl Junkie Curls In A Bottle (dime to nickle sized blob)
Diffused til 95% dry
Applied a tiny bit more CJ CIAB to tame some frizzies from diffusing

Pics are posted in my flickr account. I'm not super impressed with the results. The frizzies are definitely from diffusing but my curls are not as tight as they usually get with my typical routine (KBB Hair Milk + KCCC). Anyone have any advise on how I could make this combo work? I'm gonna try the SS products tomorrow I think. Hopefully I'll have better luck with that.

I find CIAB very curl defining and shine-inducing. However, when I used it after CCCC Lite, ugh. When I used it after leave-in or before Gel..nice.

I'm taking a look at the thread on those two products right now but any suggestions on how to use them would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Try letting your hair air dry for, like 15 to 20 minutes if you can, after putting in the CIAB. I find that when I apply products and then diffuse I get consistently bad hair but if I give the product time to sort of, I don't know, "set?" on my hair then diffuse it 1) cuts down on my time needed with the diffuser and 2) cuts down on frizz (my biggest problem).

I haven't tried the CJ products yet but I am waiting for the Curl Assurance Daily conditioner (I plan to use it as a leave in) and the Curls In A Bottle. That technique is what I always use. If I try to diffuse too soon, forget it, it could be the most perfect product in the world but my hair will suck.
HG's:
Gel: BRHG mixed with Aura Naturalle Gel or B&A Gel
LI: GVP Conditioning Balm or Giovanni Smooth as Silk,
Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (as a DC, before and after dying grays, and like a serum on dry hair)

Method: Air dry 20 minutes, then blow dry for volume.

2/3 mix waves/curls - coarse, frizz prone, med. thick, porous, at-home color for gray, protein sensitive but I still need it sometimes, glycerin-sensitive (I think) in high humidity, mod-CG routine.

CIAB worked extremely well for me when it started getting hot and humid here the past couple of weeks. But its been cold and dry since the weekend and CIAB is making my hair droopy and dry. Maybe it's other factors, but my experience is that CIAB works better in warmer, more humid weather.

I played around with a couple combinations yesterday afternoon that didn't go too well (CCCC + SS CEJ + SS FHG + diffusing and later CCCC + SS CEJ + air drying - pics on flickr or will be this afternoon).

But this morning I think I might have found part of a combination that will work well for me. I water washed in the sink, applied a large puddle (1.5 x quarter sized) of KBB Hair Milk to wet hair, then used a flour sack towel to get excess water out, then applied about a nickel sized puddle of CJ CIAB. Brushed through while hanging my head upside down and then scrunched a lot. Didn't touch my hair at all while it was drying and its turned out pretty well. I will try to get pics when I get home, but its curlier than it would be with KBB alone. Also more defined and shinier. But without diffusing I have no volume. And I definitely have a little frizz (nothing crazy but not ideal). So I think I need something on top of this or in addition to this to get the results I really want. I think I'll try the SS CEJ on top of this combo tomorrow and see how it goes.

Epona: What I find works for me when using CIAB is to apply my leave-in in the shower. Plop for 10 mimutes or so. Apply CIAB in sections making sure to get enough product on all of my hair (otherwise I'll get frizz where I missed). Clip hair. Let hair dry for 30-45 minutes. Then, diffuse until pretty much dry upside down gently scrunching out any crunch I may have. I find I have tons of volume, shine and defined curls. However, I do find that later in the day I will get some frizz, not too bad though. I feel I sacrifice a little frizz for tons of volume and shine. So, it's worth if for me.

I'm in Atlanta, too. I've been having excellent results using a pea-sized amount of SS protein treatment as a leave-in followed by about a quarter-sized puddle of CJCCCC Lite, comb thru with a wide-toothed comb then flip over and comb thru upside down with a fairly fine-toothed comb, rewet very well (a la the Super Soaker method, but with just a spray bottle), squish and scrunch to get the curls going then blot well with a cotton t-shirt or the like, diffuse upside down and sideways until about 1/3-1/2 dry, lightly dip three fingers into SS FHG twice and scrunch throughout hair, diffuse a moment or two more then flip over and clip the top, maybe diffuse a little more (not always and not much when I do), then air dry until absolutely dry (I remove the clips after 20-30 minutes). I don't use the pixie curl when I diffuse - I'm always in too big a hurry and too lazy to do all the turning on and off. I could never tell much difference when I went to the trouble, plus I think that has to be hard on a dryer.

I did this last Thursday, and it lasted very well until I washed it this morning (although in an updo the last two days). Repeated today with the same great results! Sorry, no pics - my camera phone is dead, and I need a new charger and no other digital camera.

Only difference was on Thursday I washed w/GTTTT followed by SS protein treatment as a quick rinse-out, then proceeded as above. Today, I washed w/T-Sal (also sulfate-free), and my hair felt well conditioned enough already (probably because of the natural oils from going so long between washings) that I didn't use a rinse-out, just a dime-sized amount of KBB Hair Milk as leave-in then the touch of SS RPT, etc.

My hair is just really loving the SS protein - it's curling better than it has in at least three years. I need to get some of her new protein spray, too. I had begun to do a lot better using AO GPB protein conditioner before this, but this has bumped it up another notch or two. I've finally come to believe that a lot of my problems both before going CG and since, up until the past several months, was that I was lacking protein. My hair has changed the past few years, becoming looser, finer textured and less dense, and I was still treating it like I did when it was a much coarser, denser 3B/3C - it didn't need the protein then that it now seems to love.

Super Soaker method followed by adding the gel part of the way thru diffusing (Smasters method) gives me very uniform, strong curls with great definition and little to no frizz. I don't even need as strong a gel as I've been using the past couple of years - the bit of SSFHG has been plenty. Whether this all holds true as we really get into summer here remains to be seen!

I've also done all of this after washing with CJ Daily Fix, and it worked great, but I'd gone so long between washing the past two times that I felt like it needed low-pooing.

But for future reference the pixiecurl method (as I understand it) is where you gather a portion of hair in the diffuser bowl, push the diffuser right up against your scalp and then turn on the diffuser, let it run for a bit, turn it back off, then move it to a different location and repeat. Basically, it reduces frizz since you aren't blowing your hair all over the place and it promotes curl since you're basically scrunching the hair at the same time you're drying it. But it sounds like you're doing essentially the same thing but without turning the hair drier off and on constantly.

That's exactly what I do. I can't tell any difference in frizz when I turn it off and when I don't - my diffuser doesn't blow it around, but maybe others do.

After letting my hair airdry for a bit I pick up random chunks of it and blow dry UNDER whatever chunk of hair I pick up (I don't even bother diffusing anymore, whatever shape the waves and curls take is their shape and I am not fighting it, I just want to cut my frizz). This way I am drying it from the underneath part and it seems to work fine.

I don't mind a LITTLE frizz either for the sake of having some volume.

I definitely do not pixiecurl. My blow dryer has the bowl diffuser. And, sometimes I place the hair in the bowl and just dry a section at a time. Then other times I just SOTC moving the diffuser all over. My diffuser doesn't blow my hair all over. It has little vents in it so I can control the amount of air flow. I can't say that I prefer one method over the other.
I try and keep my routine as simple as I can. Otherwise, I'd never get out of the bathroom and make it to work on time.....

You might want to try with two variations:

Don't brush product through hair, just scrunched it into hair.

Don't add the KBB hair milk. See if the CJ products alone will be sufficiently moisturizing.
