Straightening hair to curl it???

Just need to rant a bit.

My 12 year old niece and my sis-in-law both have beuatiful naturally curly hair (like 3b Botticelli curls). We have a big party this weekend and they went to a hairdresser yesterday for a consultation for getting their hair done for the party.

They are going to blow dry their hair straight and then put in curlers or something to get it curly. I asked why and she said it is because they don't like their natural curl and want spirally curls. But they both have such beautiful curls (I'm so jealous of their curls) that it makes no sense to me to take out real curls to add back fake curls.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that doesn't make sense.

Yeah it's kind of backwards, but I used to do it too. Eventually I realized that the heat-curled look I liked could almost be mimicked exactly by fingerstyling with the right products. If I want something more uniform, I play around with my flexi-rods, which I would maybe suggest to them. Otherwise they just have to learn to embrace their natural curl pattern on their own I guess!
Oh yeah I have an Asian friend with Type 2 hair who does that daily (straighten it completely, then make big curls/waves near the ends with a big-barrel curling iron). It's only because she doesn't know how to work with her texture and it's currently extremely frizzy. She's pretty invested in that mindset (she's told me multiple times that she likes me better with straight hair) so there's no convincing her to try otherwise... but my own completely honest opinion is that her hair looks dull, fried, and overbleached... so ya know, whatever floats her boat I haven't seen her in awhile so I wonder if she'd give wavy/curly hair a chance after seeing my new CG hair!
