Default How do you curlies apply gel?

Hello!

I think this thread was done years ago, and I would love to bring it back.
How do you guys apply gel? Any strange ways?
I usually rake it and when my hair is in between my fingers then I close them together so that it ribbons the hair. Then just scrunch a bit more in

Now it's your turn!

I usually grab a dollop, rub it between my hands and just start scrunching into my hair, first the bottom, then more of the top layers, then repeat on the other side (I usually tilt my head, lol!).
But I don't really know if this is the best way to do it, I'm still on the fence about trying 'raking'. Do you find it breaks up your clumps, or do they reform?

With raking you have to be careful. If I rake too much I break my curls and my hair dries aweful! Happened today and I just had to put it up. But when I rake only a bit, pretty much only once in every section of hair, it works good and dries pretty. I really think that the least you disturb the irritable curls, the better!!!!!

I do about the same way as Devin.

The only things I rake in are my leave-in and sometimes my curl creme.

I Super Soak, rake, scrunch and similar "ribboning" as the OP. I use them alone or in combination. It all depends on the product of the day and how my hair is looking after product is applied. I may need to rake to fix wonky curls or scrunch to get the clumps going.

I still supersoak sometimes on the weekends because during the week I would have to wake up a bit earlier and I won't wake up earlier than 6:45 am !!!! That is when I have to wake up to work.
Supersoak is amazing, specially with Biotera curl cream. love it.
During the week I just use leave in and gel, rake and scrunch.

Head bent over, hair soaking wet, I rub a walnut size blob of gel between my hands and run it over my hair, then squish to push the gel thru to all the hair, then I scrunch and plop in a terry turban towel, scrunch, air and diffuse dry, scrunch.

I section my hair and rake gel through the sections. I'll sometimes just finger comb the section after or use a denman or paddle brush to help clump the curl. Clip the roots in the front so they don't dry flat, then I either leave my hair as is to dry or plunk in my hair net for about an hour.

I usually do it just like this, too. I don't use very much. Sometimes I don't scrunch it in, I just gently run it through using my fingers. I then tend to use the Hand Dry Hair gloves to scrunch.

What I think of as ribboning is sort of like the rake and shake with out the shaking and as the OP said closing your fingers on the hair while raking. It smooths the hair (with product) as you run your closed fingers down the length leaving "ribbons". Hope this makes sense. Then I scrunch to encourage the curl and clumps.

After raking leave-in through my hair, I rake in gel. First I start from ears down on both sides of my head (that's gel blob #1). Then I rake the top from hairline back, back of head, and sides from ears up (gel blob #2). Next is wide tooth comb to make sure no tangles and to help with distribution. Then I scrunch to get the curls boingy.

Ah, thanks Soficurls! Maybe on a weekend or something I'll try that. But I suppose what I'm doing still is working for me!
I really only rake my hands through my hair when conditioner is in it though. Even my leave in I just smooth in.

I prefer scrunching but sometimes have a problem getting the product all over and of course I don't notice it till hair is dry!

I rake in my co(leave in-whatever) and scrunch the gel in. I cannot rake the gel or I have stringy, plastered to my scalp hair....yeah, real pretty right?
