How MUCH?

I think I have a problem. How much is too much when it comes to product? I feel as if I have to use quite a lot to actually control my hair. None of them contain any silicones but could there be a drawback? I just feel as if my curls aren't defined properly without a lot of product. Either that or I just have a hell of a lot of hair.

Am I the only one?

It's an individual thing and you learn how much you need bit by bit.

My hair weighs down semi-easily, so I have to watch quantities or I get producty hair.

You may need more due to your own bulk.

I don't see a downside to using a lot of product (condish and natural styling products) unless you get build-up easily or it gets expensive.

I would see a downside if your hair is sensitive to something in a fave product (like a drying alcohol) and ends up being damaged by it. But most condishes and CG stylers are pretty hair-friendly. Just watch things like firm-hold gels and others that can be drying.

No, I also have to put on what I feel is a heck of a lot of product in my hair as well. However, none of my styling products have silicones so it never feels weighed down. I think I might have a bad hair cut though...

Covet- I love your hair.
I use tons of product too. I need the hold.
I was going to recommend BRHG, but I see you are in England. I have no idea if they have it there or not.

I haven't really seen that many curly products here to be honest, the only one I've found that works for me is Boots Curl Creme. I really think I should start getting everything shipped over from the US! Thanks for the recommendation!

Covet, your hair is simply amazing. Gorgeous!

I also use a metric ton of product. I need the hold, and my hair is pretty porous, so it can take it.

I use more product now than at any other point in my life, and my hair is at its healthiest. I wouldn't worry if you're not seeing build-up.

I use a lot, at least 3 big glops of gel over curl cream or plenty of leave-in condish, hair looks fine once it gets all the way dry. If I try to use less, or miss spots, the hair sort of gets fluffy and flatter at the same time, it is more attractive when it's got a lot of stuff in it.

I don't think this is harmful at all.

I used to use a lot of product when I first started going CG. But I hate that producty feel in my hair.

I have started using less and less of everything and my hair is better. I mainly started because alot of this CG stuff is expensive, so I want it to last a while. But I really find the results are better when I use less. The only thing I use a handful of is my conditioner for Co-wash (which is cheap anyway).

When I poo I only use about the size of a quarter. For gel and other various products I also use about a quarter amount. When I use the mirror curls I literally use 2 drops emulsified into the quarter size of gel and it really covers my head enough.

Sometimes less is more! I suggest doing a little less and less everyday until you find the amount that works best for you.

I think amounts are massively individual, and not only does every head need a different amount, each of us has a different idea of what 'a lot' means. :-) I think we also go through cycles when our hair needs more or less depending on whether or not we have the protein-moisture balance right. I randomly go through a bottle of protein treatment in a week, sometimes it takes 4 months or more; sometimes I can get through a 12 oz bottle of conditioner in less than a week, sometimes it takes a lot longer. My usage of styling products is a bit more stable, but some days I simply can't get hold no matter how much I use, and some days I hardly apply gel and it's fine.

I say too much is when it gets too expensive to purchase if you use it at too fast a rate. (or, similarly, when it gives you a producty feel once dry).

Protein treatments products that you apply to your hair (then rinse off) that have a high concentration of protein. They're most beneficial for those with fine or porous hair, as it seems that coarse-haired curlies don't need nearly as much protein.

And "producty" in my mind means that it feels like my hair has a ton of stuff in it, even after I SOTC. It feels gunky or dirty, or maybe still hard. I know that's not the most helpful description, but basically, producty to me means that I feel like I need to wash my hair again, even if I'm not due for a wash and I'm not oily.
