Quick SOTC Question

I always just assumed that when your hair was fully dry, you just scrunch it with your bare hands. However, lately I've been seeing people say that they have one product or another on their hands as they SOTC. Can anyone explain this to me please? Also, what kind of products are normally used?

Thanks!
Hair Type: 3a, iii, fine, medium porosity, normal elasticity

No-Poo: Suave Naturals
Leave-in: Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition
Gel: KCCC
and...: Jane Carter: Nourish & Shine to help SOTC

You can scrunch with only your hands. My hair can be formless and it tends to crave moisture, so I usually use a tiny bit of hair creme warmed between my palms to scrunch out the crunch from my gel. Or I use a bit of Set It Free if my hair is being difficult. It seems to help my curls keep their form.
I think many people use a little something on their hair to keep from getting frizz.
Growing out my curls. White hair, fine to medium texture but a lot of it. Low to medium porosity. Botticelli curls -- 2c/3a mix. My hair loves protein.
CG since '08.

Cleanser: (Summer) Beautiful Curls Nurturing shampoo or Kathymack's soap bars
Co-wash: TJ Nourish
Protein: CJ Repair Me
Styling products: (Summer) BB Styling Mudd
Gel: (Summer) BRHG, Upper Management gel.
I've tried SOTC without product and I tend to get a lot more frizz. 2 products I use -

Jane Carter Solutions Nourish and Shine - eliminates all frizz and gives me a nice shine. Love it.

Oyin Burnt Sugar pomade - this eliminates frizz and tends to help my curls hold on better for SDH.

3a/some b, med/high porosity, med texture

My current HGs:
Co-wash: Suave Naturals Coconut, VO5 Strawberries & Cream
Conditioner: Darcy Botanicals pumpkin, LVPNG, Deva OneC
Leave-in: KCKT, Deva B'Leave In
Cremes: CIAB, pink Boots, Komaza coconut, FSG, CJ CCCC
Gels: BRHG, AO B5, LALSG

Some people use leave-in condish (a bit) to add extra moisture to ends as they scrunch.

Some use a serum/oil/pomade to give shine or control /avoid the flyaway frizz that scrunching can produce.

Some use a bit more curl enhancer to places that didn't curl up as well as they SOTC.

It depends on what your hair needs or what look you prefer. Extra shine, more moisture, less frizz--or you like how it is and just want to soften the crunch out.

So..no biggie. Do it how you like.

Some I've used in the past :

JCS Nourish and Shine
CJ CA LI
John Master's Organics pomade
Jojoba oil (epic fail)
CJ Curls in a Bottle
Spiral Solutions Curl Enhancing Jelly
SS butter
Botticelli Botanicals Flaxseed Gelee
A drop of DevaCare OneC
Coconut Oil (epic fail)

I don't do well with heavy oils, it seems, but Nourish and Shine was okay for me and that's butters.

I use my bare hands, too. I've never tried with product... I think my hair would get too gunky.

It's kind of embarrassing because when I get to work, my hair is still somewhat damp. It looks stringy, crunchy, and gross. A couple hours in when it's dry, I have to go to this empty closet-like room, flip my head over, and scrunch. It looks great after that! I know someone's going to catch me one of these days, though.
Type: 3a - type 1 on the underside. Thinning.

Currently using:
-Organix Tea Tree Mint Shampoo (occasionally)
-Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition conditioner
-Suave Waterfall Mist Conditioner or Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific as leave-in
-A mix of Shique Gel and HE Totally Twisted mousse
-FX Curls Up Mousse, on occasion

Thanks for all of the replies everyone! It was really helpful. I think I'll wait until my pocketbook is a liiiittle more happy before looking into new products, especially since I haven't been doing the CG method for that long.

I used to NEVER sotc until going cg this time around. I like to use a lot of hairspray (cone free) to give it some "oomph" so i asked here for some sotc advice. Personally, if i do it w/ only hands it collapses my curl formation.

The Jane carter nourish & shine that everyone is talking about is AWESOME! It's pricey but all my other stuff is really cheap so i'm sticking w/ it. I do all my styling w/ hairspray & sotc w/ jcns & it keeps the style & even HELPS form the curls even more while leaving it soft & touchable. I'm SOLD!!!
