Questions about stretch test

So... the stretch test to see if you need protein vs. moisture.. I'm not 100% sure how to do it.
Should this be done while the hair is curled or pulled just barely taut? I mean, should we have the hair with no pressure before we stretch, so it's still curly, or just barely pull it straight and then stretch it? Instincts tell me to pull it straight first, but I'm not entirely sure.
Also, how are you supposed to hold the hair? I wet the hair and then dried my fingers (because otherwise they kept slipping), but even then when I tried to pull the hair strand, my fingers kept slipping off of it instead. Is there a technique to this? I feel like such a failure.
Also, are you supposed to stretch it till it breaks always, or not?
When I have done it, I've looped each end of the hair around my finger -- rather like dental floss.

It doesn't really matter if you take up the slack first or not, since you're only going to see the "results" once the hair is taut and you'll get there either way. And if your hair stretches like gumbands then you won't need to apply tension until it breaks, because you'll already have your answer, as it were.
I do the dental floss technique, too. My hair used to snap AT ONCE. Now, it stretches a wee bit before snapping. So, weekly conditioning tx's took me from zip elasticity to nearly zip. heh.

All right guys,
I tried the dental floss technique and managed to do it. The shed hair I used last night was one that was from my shower and had been sitting in soar scum for like 8 hours, and it snapped immediately. But I had a feeling that probably wasn't representative of my current hair, since it'd been sitting in that soap scum. So when I pulled out my pineapple this morning I was lucky enough to get one shed hair, and I tried it, and it stretched about 40% I think, and then snapped. It was hard for me to tell when to stop stretching, so I snapped it anyway.
I think that means I need me some protein. Thank goodness, because my hair has been very limp and soft, but I wanted to reaffirm that was actually the issue before I went ahead with even more protein, in case it was actually the reverse.
I usually comb out my hair after 2 days because it looks unkempt, so I'll see if I get more shed hairs tonight to test it on. Having more than one would give me a better idea, I think.
Thanks, guys! Gawrsh, hair sure is confusing sometimes. @_@
Did you wet the hair? From what I understand, you need to wet the hair before the strand test.

I did it both wet and dry, using various strands (top of head, lower part, sides) and they all snapped pretty fast, sooooo....

That aside . . . honestly: just pull out a few hairs. That way, you can sample from known parts of your head and have a better sense of your hair's overall properties.

One shed hair . . .
I know. Just wait until after my shower---I got lots for testing.

And when my thyroid blips out of range, I just drop hairs wherever I go, like Hansel and Gretel's breadcrumbs in the woods.

Anyway, I have concluded the stretch test isn't going to help me. I combed my hair today and got like 20 hairs... some of them snapped right away, some stretched a little and snapped, and some stretched quite a bit and snapped. Which tells me... nothing. -_- Maybe I should just do a PT and then a DT and PRAY... even though I'm not 100% sure if that's what I need. STUPID CONFUSING HAIR!

And yes, I wet the hair first.

But, you can do this: Before you do your next poo, run your fingers through sections--like the crown, the nape, the sides. You'll likely have loose hairs that you can just fingercomb out. But do it by section, and test by section. That might tell you IF you have particular situations for particular areas. Or it's just a mishmosh.

If it's the former, and, for example, it snaps right off at the crown, but is stretchy at teh nape, you can add more moisture or do a limited area moisture condish tx where it's snappy, and add some protein to the area where it's stretchy, rather than slathering it all over. Targeted, in other words.

I have lots of loose hair before a shower, and it will come out if I spend a few minutes finger combing.
