DMDM hydantoin is a formaldehyde releaser (used as preservative) which can cause scalp dermatitis in people sensitive to formaldehyde. Since it's in both the Goddess Glaze and the KMS, if you do have a sensitivity to it, it might have been exacerbated by the doubling up.

Wow- I should look that up.

Do you think Jessicurl, DC, CJ has it in it too?

Eeeeeeeeeeep! You may *not* have a problem with the DMDM hydantoin -- you could be allergic to just about anything in them, really -- just that that's the thing that jumped out at me.

I understand- I just thought maybe I would try eliminating those first and see if it helps.

Have you tried rotating your products? I have a lot of allergies/sensitivies and used to run into problems with hair products before I started rotating them. Before rotating, it would seem fine, but over time, my head would start to itch like crazy. I seemed to develop an allergy to the product after repeated use. It got to the point that I could barely make it through a bottle before it started to bother me ... and ... once it started to bother me, it didn't matter if I took a break from it. I was never able to use it again.

Now I don't use the same product two days in a row. It means I have a huge stash of products, but I no longer have the problem of developing an allergy to something that didn't bother me initially. It has made a huge difference for me. The other bonus is that I seldom suffer from buildup because I low poo and don't use the same products repeatedly.

Sorry .. not much help to your current situation, but thought you might want to consider trying what I did. It worked well for me.

Hey that might help, FrizzBgone! So how often do you switch products- like every three days? Do you switch all your products at once on a rotation? Also, how many products do you need to keep your itching at bay?

Sorry for all the questions- I am just trying to get a sense of what I can try. Like you, after a honeymoon period with products, it has eventually made my scalp incredibly itchy!

Honestly, when my scalp is itchy it means I have product build up. Did you have any problems before you went CG? Maybe do a clarifying wash with a sulfate shampoo *gasp* and see how your scalp feels then.

I have clarified with baking soda and vinegar. Hmmm so you think using a basic clarifying shampoo (with sulfates) might be better?

I was allergic to several of the popular products (CK, Shea M LI, Bioterra) to name a few. They made my scalp burn after a few uses. I could never narrow down what it was. When a thread started about Propylene Glycol allergy, I thought it might be that--but it's in a lot of products I use with no problem.

I have always rotated products. Even back in the day when I only used shampoo/conditioner, I had to switch every few weeks because my hair satiated. I've only been using styling products for about 3 years. Although I wet and style every day, I seldom use the same product more then twice a week. I don't lowpoo, but do use natural soap bars to cleanse every three days in summer (stretched it out to 5-7 last winter.) They are just enough to remove the residual oils, etc., from the CG products I use. I started using the CJ Daily Fix. Originally, I took it to the salon when I got my hair cut every six weeks. Tried to remember to use it a little more (every two weeks) because it has a chelating agent. At this point, I probably use it monthly. It does have Cocamidopropyl Betaine, which is a mild cleansing agent. It might be a great product for you to use on occasion.

At first I thought it might be that too. Do you purchase your shampoo bars from one particular brand?

Yes, I can't use the Chagrin Valley bars that are very popular around her. It's the castor oil they use. pm me if you're interested.

So today is day two of BB FSG and SS HHG and my itchness is mostly gone. However, that doesn't mean it won't return. So maybe I should rotate those products!

Like Kathymack, I don't use the same product 2 days in a row. I don't take the chance anymore. As long as I rotate, I no longer develop allergies to any of the products. There are still products that I can't use ... I'm allergic to CK. It makes my feel like my head is covered in bugs; I get so itchy from it I can't stand it.

You could try doing an ACV rinse. If my scalp is feeling a little funky, I'll either clarify or rinse with ACV. I normally try the rinse first. If it doesn't work, I'll use the clarifying shampoo. I don't like to clarify very often. I used to have to clarify really often, now I seldom do. Eliminating the cones and mineral oil from my product routine has made a big difference in my hair and scalp.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to try and do what you suggest.

I stopped using the two gels - KMS and Curls - and have stopped itching- so have been using BB and SS. But I will rotate those as well.

So it looks like I should probably get additional low poo/conditioner too. Good thing DH is going out of town and I won't have to explain that to him

The curls goddess glaze made me itch too. Thank God for Kathy Mack and her samples.....it was just a sample I used. If it were ME I'd say it was that. I have no problems with the KMSC&PG. Love it actually.

I'm like Kathy and Frizzbgone in that I have sensitivities and that I rotate. I can't say I never use something two days in a row, but it's rare.

So I have to update that product rotation is working very well for me! Thank you all so much.

This also gives me a chance to see what product combos work best for my hair too. And, I have discovered a deep love for BB FSG so I got some Bain De Terre Bain de Terre Flax Seed Styling Gel (although discontinued I guess??) to rotate with it so I do not become sensitive to it.
