I just wanted to say a massive….

… thank you!!

I’ve been reading all your posts for some time now and you’ve all helped me so much.

I’ve never fought my curly hair but I now know that everything I was doing to it was actually really bad for it!! I always knew that washing my hair every day (yep, every day, and with clarifying shampoo!) was bad but couldn’t see a way out of it. My hair didn’t look bad, but it did take a lot of effort and come the morning would be an absolute mess, hence having to wash it and start all over again.

So, my old routine consisted of washing daily, using cone laden conditioners – John Frieda Glistening Crème -, John Frieda Serum, Boots Curl Crème, mousse… hairspray sometimes, and shine spray!!!! I used soooo many products! And I always diffused it.

Now from reading all your posts and reading the Curly Girl book, I’ve been following this routine since mid September - co-wash, condition with Umberto Giannini Curl Friends Easy Comb Rich conditioner mixed with honey and I style with Boots Curl Crème and Andrew Collinge Curl Scrunching Gelle. I wash of an evening and sleep with it wet so I can go off to work in the morning without dripping wet hair!!! For the first few weeks on CG I went out with wet hair and let it air dry throughout the day. It took so long though – at least 6 hours - that I’ve found washing at night works best for me.

I know I still have a lot to learn and my poor hair will take a long time to recover from all those years of abuse!... but thanks to you all my hair has vastly improved and I’m very happy with it at the moment. I never thought I’d be able to survive without all those products, so thank you all again.

I’ve also set up a Fotki account as I took lots of pictures of my hair from the very beginning to track my progress.

One little question for you all though… what hair type do you think I have?

Thanks again,
Natalie
xx

You have beautiful hair, Natalie!! I'd say you're mostly 3b but in the close-up pics I also think I'm seeing a little bit of 2c/3a, but again mostly 3b imo. Welcome!!

Agree with the others, mostly 3b, some 3a in there maybe. You have great hair! This site is wonderful, there's so much to learn.
2b/3a, primarily use Jessicurl and DevaCurl products, Curls Hair Tea conditioner and various gels. I'm modified CG-ish since 5/04.
Lovely hair! Looks 3b, lucky you!
2c/3a?
Low porosity, medium texture.

If it smells good put it in your hair, if it tastes good spit it out!
Welcome! There is a LOT to learn around here!
I vote 3a-3b on the hair type.

Thank you so much for all your comments

So I'm mostly 3b then... I'll have to have a good read up on the types so I understand it all better

I learned the exact way that you did by just browsing around here last spring. It takes so long to find the right routine and products. There are so many products out there that work for people on CG and it gets confusing at first trying to decide what to use and how to use them. Your hair looks great though!
Welcome CurlyNats,
WOW! You can already see the difference! Your curls were beautiful to begin with, and on CG they look just as beautiful, however, more natural and soft-looking. I'd say you are a 3a/3b. Good luck on your CG journey. You're off to a wonderful start!
3B, with oodles and oodles of curly hair!
Summer Faves: Devacare NoPoo & OneC, CF High Humidity Gel.

Been CG since 2005 and never looked back!
Thank you! You both have such beautiful hair!!

This is honestly a wonderful place, and although I feel like I'm ever so slightly obsessed about hair at the moment it is all worth it

It's so good to be able to learn from other curly ladies. I thought I understood my hair and did what worked best for it - or that it was the only way of controlling it really - but it's so nice to know that what I'm doing now is actually good for my hair!

i love your curls nats! you have so much body and volume its beautiful! i noticed in your pre-CG you thought your hair looked nice on holiday - i found that too! when i went to portugal in april my curls were so soft and very bouncy and defined and i hardly used any product at all. i thought the heat would make them worse, but it did the opposite. it almost made me want to move to portugal to have beautiful hair all the time

i hope you're having fun working out all the things your hair likes and dislikes - and dont worry about the hair obsession. join the club

Thank you so much Jenny!
Your curls are absolutely amazing!!!.. just gorgeous!

Yep, I think I've always found that on holiday. I'd think uh oh what's my hair going to be like in the heat and then it always goes really nice. It often made me wonder about only washing my hair with mineral water hee hee how mad is that!!

It does make me wonder what it would be like now I've finally changed my routine so much! I guess I'll just have to wait until the summer to find out though

If it weren't for NC a lot of us ladies would be absolitely lost on what products to use or even how to effectively take care of our curls. I came here in 1995 and I was totally clueless, but I quickly started to grasp all of the information that was available to me here, just lke you did CurlyNat, and things have gotten a lot better for my hair as well.

Good luck!

I haven't logged on in the longest time, but tonight I got on here to tell everyone how much I'm starting to DIG my own hair! Who'da thunk it?? I've been modified CG since June this year, and only for a very short time did I go back to blow drying straight. (mostly because we had a nice little cold snap and the lack of humidity helped my hair stay straigt for an entire day.) But now my hair is longer, and it's really starting to curl nicely. I'm finally getting to the point where i really understand what products I can use during what types of weather to make it look GREAT every day. It's really pretty neat. And now I'm starting to get some cool compliments on how great my curls are from complete strangers. And that's the best type of comment EVER. Anyhow, I just wanted to get my 2 cents in like Nats did - I feel ya, girl!!!
Hair type 3A. Jessicurl is becoming my HG!
