Default Seborrheic Dermatitis: Raw Honey Treatment

Hi,

I'm somewhat new to cg and nc.com, and usually just read the boards (I guess you'd call that a lurker ), but I thought this post might be interesting, and possibly helpful, for other curlies/wavies who also deal with chronic sd.

I recently discovered that my seborrheic dermatitis flares up pretty badly when I use Deva products, particularly the low poo. My scalp definitely doesn't like something in it. One C also bothers me, but not as much as the low poo. I've since stopped using all Deva products and it's helped a little, but I'm still feeling the aftermath of an aggravated scalp from using those products. In an effort to try and narrow down the ingredient(s) that might be causing these flare ups so I can avoid them in the future (which I still haven't discovered yet), I came across an article as well as a post on another message board about a raw honey treatment for sd sufferers:

http://www.liveallergyfree.com.au/20...ney-treatment/

http://rosaceagroup.org/The_Rosacea_...ad.php?t=20789

Perhaps some of you have heard of this? I think I've read most of the posts on nc.com regarding sd and following the cg routine, and I don't remember seeing a treatment like this mentioned. Anyway, it sounded really interesting and seemed to yield positive results for the small trial that was held, as well as for the op of that post. I'm definitely open to new remedies that might help keep my sd at bay, especially if I can avoid using topical steroids (I really hate having to use them).

So I went out and bought some raw honey today and gave this a try. Here is what I did:
(*Note: You must use raw honey - unprocessed and unfiltered. I found mine at the local organic grocery store. It's called Really Raw Honey and was $7.99 for an 8 oz jar.)

1. Diluted 1 TBSP raw honey to approx 1/4 TBSP water (the instructions say 90% honey, 10% water so I just eyeballed it). Consistency was very pasty.
2. Applied honey paste to affected areas. For me this would be the lower left section of my scalp and a little on my ears (If using on your scalp, I would suggest wetting hair first before applying the paste. I forgot to do this and it was a bit messy and super sticky).
3. Left on for 3-ish hours.
4. Water washed honey out of hair.
5. Applied leave-in on length only, avoiding scalp.

You could probably co-wash or low-poo for step 4, but I just water washed since I need to wash it again in the morning. The honey rinsed out very easily.

It's only been a couple of hours so I don't know if the treatment actually did anything to help the symptoms yet. I am itch-free at the moment, but that could just be from the water washing and cleansing my scalp. I'm going to repeat this process for the next few weeks, as the article suggested, and see how things go. I forgot the coconut oil step, but will try that next time and see it if it makes a difference. I'll post an update once I've done it a few times.

If any of you have any thoughts on this, I would love to hear them!

No thoughts for this...but please update because a good friend of mine has this issue and is always looking for something to treat it.

Thanks!

This sounds like a nice thing to try. Honey does have antibacterial properties. I too hate using steroid creams.

Going CG has really benefited my scalp. I've also used green tea rinses and that helps a lot with the itching.

Extra virgin olive oil has also worked wonders...also antibacterial, etc. properties there. I use a little in the very front. I use the oil cleanse method on my face and moisturize with the EVOO. It really helps my face.

The Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat conditioner as a co-wash also helped with the itching. I just left it on for a few minutes after scrubbing.

So, that is what has helped me. I think I'll try the honey sometime.

I like the GTTT as a co-wash as well, but I think the consistency is a little too thick for this, as it's difficult to distribute and I end up having to use a ton of it just to wash my hair. I'm also a bit of a PJ so I'm always looking to try something new.

I've never heard of green tea rinses, but maybe I'll give that a try as well.

I did my second treatment with the honey tonight, although I think I diluted it a little too much. The consistency was a bit runny, but I used it anyway since I didn't want to waste it. I'll post an update after a few more treatments to see if I actually notice a difference.

yuhwoo, are you still doing your honey treatments? I'm sitting here with raw honey on my scalp. I've decided to try it for the month recommended and see what happens. I have my fingers crossed. I've also washed my face with the honey a couple of times and like it. I think I'll alternate it with the oil cleanse method. Any luck with your treatments? I'm really going to give it my best this month to see if this works, and I'll post my results if anyone is interested.

I would love to hear about your results Curry Curls. I was just thinking of creating a post on something that's been helping (what I think) is my dry scalp. Right after showering, on soaking wet hair, I have been taking a tiiiiny bit of my Giovanni DLI and mixing it in my hands with a little water. I then rub this into my scalp really well. I definitely think this has been helping. I would never try this with anything that does not have all natural ingredients, which is why I think the GDLI is good for this.

Ok, will post then. Rubbing in the GDLI sounds interesting. I might have to try that with my GTTTT conditioner later on.

Ok, so I rinsed the honey out after three hours and put in a little pumpkin seed condish, trying to avoid my scalp. So far, I like it. I'm going to post in about a week after three more treatments. I think there is supposed to be some improvement after a week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Keep us posted on how its working!

Ive had SD for YEARS - and the only thing I find that works is TSal by neutrogena. You can buy a huge bottle at Costco for really cheap, and I think Target/Walmart makes a generic version that works just as well. It strong, and usually dries out my hair, so i couple it with a deep condish or a honey rinse - but ive never thought of using honey on my scalp!

I also use Giovanni TT Shampoo when ive just got a little itch - and I love this shampoo. Its not harsh at all.

Make sure before you use any poo - to really brush your scalp well before getting in to the shower. That way all the scales are removed and any treatment you use gets in. When its really bad, I use the TSal and I swear by it. Whatever you use, be sure to leave on the scalp for as long as possible for best results.

Ive tried to go no poo, but it exasperated the SD for me. But Ive got SUPER thick hair - and in the winter time, the SD gets worse - with wearing hats and not wearing my hair up as much.

Keep us posted on the honey treatments - im curious to know if it works.

EDITED TO ADD: just read the very bottom of that allergy link and it says do not apply honey to open wounds or cuts as it could make it worse. When the SD gets bad, I DO have small sores on my scalp - so this wouldnt work for me at all. Dont know if you do as well, but something to think about.

Oh - noticed you had a link for Rosacea. I had that years ago - and treated it with Evening Primrose Oil and it went away and never came back. That was after going to a dermatologist who gave me antibiotics that didnt work at all.

Did you just take the Evening Primrose Oil supplements or is there something else? I have suffered from Rosecea and SD for at least 15 years.

I did the supplements - they look like Vit E. the info was in Prescription for Nutritional Healing - 500mg 3xday. Its a great book if youre looking for a combination of western/eastern ways of healing.

Its a great resource! I think they make a new one each year.

There is also a great one for children - Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child - that has western & eastern medicine as well as holistic options for each illness.

And a healthy diet/lifestyle helps too!

Good luck!!

Holy bee barf, Batman!

Ok, so I've been doing this for the last week religiously. I've done it 4 times already. I've had to sit on my hands to keep from posting before the week was over. I was excited after the first treatment. The first time, I only put the honey on my scalp and behind my ears. I bought some pure raw honey from my grocery store. The next three times, I put it on my scalp, behind my ears, all over my face, and inside my ears. My face is super soft. I think the honey exfoliates, because normally when I cleanse, I have to scrub a bit with the washcloth because of the SD. Now, I just do my normal oil cleanse and don't really have to scrub! I alternate the oil cleanse with honey cleansing. So, I know I'm jumping around with this reply, but I guess I'm just too excited to post properly. I'm sold on this treatment! I haven't used the coconut oil, because I'm already using EVOO and love it. So, I just put the EVOO on my face and hairline after the treatment. I also put on a turbie twist while the honey is on my scalp, because it does drip and gets very messy otherwise.

What more can I say? I can see my scalp along my hairline! Usually, I have patches of flakes that are really embarrassing, and after I have co-washed and my hair is wet and the flakes are wet and I say to myself, just let me scratch that one little spot off and then I have flakes all over the place in my wet hair and want to cry. ALL my flake patches along the front of my hairline are gone. The rest of my head feels wonderful too. I have suffered from this at least since I was 16...started with my scalp and moved on to my face when I was 18. My forehead would get so itchy, red, scaly, and sore.

I am totally sold on this treatment, and it's only been a week. I can't wait to see what happens after the month is up. Hopefully, I can just do it weekly like the article says and have it stay under control. I fully intend to keep doing honey washes every other day and oil cleanses the alternate days. The honey works better than the prescription shampoo did and better than the steroid creams.

I really can't express how excited I am about this.

I can post again in another week to update further.

Thanks for listening!

*forgot to mention that I have also not been losing as much hair. I hope this treatment is helping with my hair fallage. *

Sigh. I was JUST at the grocery store and saw raw honey while I was buying regular honey. I said to myself, should I buy some in anticipation of wonderful results from Curry Curls? And then I said no, I must wait for her reply before I spend the money! Hahaa.

I am SO glad it's working for you and I hope it continues to do so! My heart sank a little when you were talking about wanting to cry out of the shower. I really know how you feel even though I am not technically diagnosed as having SD.

Anyway, I definitely want to try this too! I am kind of dreading trying to fit this in with PT's & DT's, but it's obviously so worth it! To me healing my scalp is even more important than the condition of my hair. I am just lazy when it comes to long hair treatments.

Thanks for the results Curry Curls and definitely report back after more time has passed! Again, I am very happy this is working for you

Oh, I really want to try this now. I get so frustrated with SD along my hairline, and nothing really seems to work.

Thanks, BLB. You are sweet.

I have the honey on now again. Interestingly, since I really haven't been styling my hair too much or even co-washing...mostly water washing it has decided to behave. It is softer and looks pretty decent after I put a bit of conditioner in and scrunch it. I haven't been too concerned with how it looks or what the color is doing, because I've been totally focused on the honey stuff.

wavyblonde, I would highly recommend this treatment. It is rather time consuming, but totally worth it in my opinion. It works better than the prescription stuff...for me anyhow. I did notice my scalp was better after the first application. I am not itching anymore either.
