Winter Curls are a big FLOP! :(

Overall, my hair gets much flatter in the dry, cold weather. This year (not that it's been all that cold, but it's definitely been drier), I've been using a more moisturizing conditioner (rotating between Devacurl One C, Activate, Curls Asian Hair Tea & La Coupe Silky Smoothing), then using AG Re:coil as my leave-in, & combining mousse with my gel. I've been getting great hair days since I've started this about a week ago, so I hope it continues

Shampoo: Still use sulfates, but only on roots
Rinse out: Deva One C, JC Too Shea, Original Sprouts Deep Conditioner
Curl Enhancers: KCCC; JC Rocking Ringlets, JC Spiralicious, & Confident Coils
Styler: BRHG (over any and all curl enhancers) - this is the one product that I never change - absolute HG!!

My hear looks phenomenal in the 40's, 50's but in this 30 degree and below weather it turns to hay. I'm going to have to put more leave in then!

I just upped the amount of conditioner, and it seems to help. I can use the TooShea once a week or so as a DT since any more than that gives me the proteins.

The coconut oil helps too. They're not summer curls, but at least it's not a total bed of frizz.

I'm doing a cheapie challenge this month. Another poster was concerned that drugstore conditioners were bad for hair and that they may not give the results that a salon product would. Since I've become hypersensitve to protein, and my dye hates glycerin, that just about eliminates almost all salon/higher end products for me. So, I'm using White Rain and coconut oil this month. Both are cheap. One came from a grocery store. One came from a health food store. I will use coconut oil as my DT treatment this month. I'm interested in seeing how it'll work, especially since it has been dry and cold off and on.

After Christmas, I am totoally going to play with making my own. I want something with some behentrimonium!
Kiva! Microfinance works.

Okay , so it seems a lot of you are using a DT to help but I'm worried I'll be over conditioned . Do you think Jojoba oil or something along those lines would be better ?
Alrighty so today I decided to go back to my usual routine of CoN wash with tons of Suave Vanilla/Sugar left in my hair. I recently bought some Curls products and they are great, but the conditioner weighs my hair down if left in, and I really can't go without conditioner left in my hair. So I think that was in part why my hair wasn't looking too great the last couple of weeks. So this morning I did my usual routine and put in extra conditioner and TONS of Suave Anti Frizz gel, plopped for about half an hour, let it air dry and my hair looks fantastic! well defined, shiney curls. They are a bit crunchy but that's how I like it on my first day, it guarantees great 2nd day hair. So I think I'll be sticking to my usual routine from now on this winter. Then again, it is in the 40's/50's today so that could also be why I'm having a wonderful hair day. But, I'm sure it's my Suave Conditioner/Gel combo. They are my HG's and so hard to find!

My hair's looking like crud today. I washed it this morning and expected it come come out as it did at the weekend.

But no, I have stringy hay like hair. It could be because it needs a trim, it could be the weather, it could be both. I'm considering trying sulfate shampoo and seeing if my sulfate free stuff has caused this mess.

Bah! Damn the stupid rain, wind and cold.
Fat does not make you fat. It's actually pretty important.
Since the last time I posted in this thread, I switched back to a previous routine (re:coil followed by Samy Get Curls potion and then BRHG or Solid Water), and my hair looks about 100% better. I'd been trying out some Jessicurl stuff last week and while I really liked it, I'm thinking it might be a better choice for warmer, more humid weather. *shrug*

Its so funny how we're all different . I was just going to post that I'm having good luck with Jessicurl this week . I couldn't use in when it was warmer but just this week RR and CC are giving me good results .
It seems lately I have to switch products around a bit . I guess my hair gets tired of the same products all the time .
For me, Jessicurl Gelebration to boost the curl, and HE Set Me Up seems to work well in the winter too.
for my hair it's about product type. I switch to a styling cream in the colder months. In the summer the strong hold of a gel is fine, but in the winter it's too drying. Right now Charles Worthington Curl Perfection Curl Definition Styling Cream is perfection.
I am a 3c reformed product junkie thanks to the economy.

I lurk a lot, I change my hair color a lot. It's currently black and bsl when wet and beyond my shoulders still when dry.

Now I will stop procrastinating and get back to what I was supposed to be doing before I got on here.

Any questions?

I've been in these forums maybe during 3 winters and I always hear the same thing. I see that several of you have already figured it out, winter conditioning needs to be a little different than summer ones.

Kimmyc was the first one to point out a greater need of MOISTURE (well, she's been here long enough! ). As the air gets colder it also gets dryer, outside and more so inside because of heating so ladies this is the time of year when moisturizing DTs and a bottle of home-made curl boosting spray are your best friends! Look it up in Recipe section and always carry a travel-size spray bottle with you (save the rest in the fridge). If you can afford it, get a cool-mist humidifier for your bedroom so at night the air won't keep stealing moisture from your curls, if not, spritz your hair with a little distilled water and wear a sleep bonnet.

Redcelticcurls, you're on the right track! Do use that coconut oil as a DT, I think you'll like it. Even here in FL when we get a cold spell my hair gets very dry so I massage my scalp with my Indian Medimix c.o. w/herbs and also rub some all over my hair at bedtime, then rinse it off with VO5 Kiwi & Lime Clarifying CO or "Lemon-Aid" after I get up. The air has already been dryer so I used CO with jojoba oil and some Burt's Bees Avocado Butter on Monday, then Suave's Ocean Breeze Spray Gel and my curls turned out great and refreshed perfectly the next day.

Life's hard for a curl, I agree with you! I bought L'Oreal Studio Line "Out of Bed" cream to try it after reading a couple of recommendations here, I'll probably try it tonight. This is the time of year when I also start using my oil moisturizing lotion again (during the summer I can't because it gives me frizz or stringy curls). I was actually thinking of testing if I could mix it with one of my gels. I already added a few drops of jojoba oil to my leftover Suave Aloe Vera Gel too, so I think I'm ready!

Recoil has really been working for me the last couple of days, but the weather heare is so weird. One day it's 40 degrees. the next it's 60. My curls are getting confused!

It's been crazy around here too. Not too long ago we had a week of dry cool weather, then it got warm, then it cooled off a bit again. Yesterday it was bright and sunny and this morning it started to rain quite a bit. I gotta rinse my hair today so I'll have to give some thought about what combo to use!
