Winter Curls are a big FLOP! :(
Okay I'm having some major problems. Now that the cold has finally hit NY to stay, my curls have gone down the tubes. Instead of my usual loose, fat bouncy corkscrews, i have flat, frazzled stringy curls that look like they are crimped rather than curls. I'm wondering if I should use a strong hold gel? What have you NE curlies been using this winter?

Hi,
I was just going to post the same thing! I live in NJ, and each day as it gets colder, my curls get worse. I think they're disappearing
Dominicanaheat, I'm very sorry for interrupting your thread by posting a question. I hope you don't mind. I didn't want to start another thread with the same question.
How do you know if you need to change your products for the season? This is my first winter wearing my hair curly...I used to just wash and dry my hair (no diffuser!) and went around with horrible frizzy hair.
What types of products (drugstore please) work well in cold, dry weather?
I had been using Aussie Tizz no Frizz with good results, but it isn't working anymore. I never thought I'd miss summer humidity just to get better hair.
I have Jessiecurl products on the way, so I'm hoping they'll rescue my winter hair.
Thank you-
Sherry

I'm in Pa. where it was 70 degrees one day and the next 30 so I feel your pain .
Yesterday I did something totally different . As I was getting out of the shower my phone rang so I wrapped my hair loosely in a microfiber towel . The call took longer than I thought it would so my hair was drier than usual . I really didn't feel like wetting it again so I put put some SCC through my hair , used clips on top and did a few other things around the house . When I was finished I wet my hands used a squirt or two of ArcAngell and scrunched that through , a spray or two of Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz because it was a little windy and I had volume and great curl . My husband even commented on the difference . I did the same thing today and got good results again .

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem! I'm trying different products as well. My stylist used aveda ones and got great results. When I tried them.... not so good.
She used the clips, I tried and it was a no go the first night. I'm not giving up on those things tho! I'm going to try bending them and keeping them closer to my scalp.
Sorry I don't have any advice or help on this issue -- I'm going thru the same thing.
Darby

I'm going through the same thing. It's been cold and dry all week and my curls have been looking dry and droopy. No real advice to offer; I've just taken to heading to the ladies' room at work every couple of hours to fluff up my underlayer and maybe scrunch in some Potion #9. Sigh.

*sigh* LOL. If I had more money I'd go back to the salon and get my hair straightened out all winter...this weather is like, destroying my hair It didn't even look good on the first day!

I have been having the same problem lately with my hair. I have been wearing my hair up in a pony every single day because my hair is just ... well crappy. There is no other way to describe it. I wish I could figure out what the prob is though. Sorry I have no advice for you.

I have to admit that I am greatly reassured by this thread. I mean, I'm sorry that so many of you are also having bad hair days but my hair has been looking *awful* lately and I was just about to post an "I'm giving up!" tale of woe. I've been blaming my products as I'm relatively new to CG and have a large pool of products I've been experimenting with. But even combinations that have worked before are falling flat. My hair was doing great, even after a cut and new highlights and then it all went *fizzle*. Right around the time we started having really cold, frosty mornings and low humidity. Hmmm.
I guess the predicted rain will come and either make a difference or not.
Wasn't there a recent thread on winterizing your curls? ...off to try and search it out

My curls have been looser lately too. I had thought it was the coconut oil, but, even without that, they are a bit more sausage like. I guess it could be the cold dry weather - it's 18 right now, so that qualifies.

My curls have been looser too, but I still have lots of curl on the ends, so I'm ok with that. I'm modified CG, and right now I'm using Paul Mitchell Super Clean Sculpting Gel on top of Abba Nourishing Leave-In conditioner. The gel has some cones that I think are water soluble - lots of PEGs and propyls in front of the cone names and no build up issues.
My big problem is getting frizz in the back from putting my coat and scarf on before my hair has fully dried.

The first winter I was here I had the same problem. Then I started using Too Shea everytime I wet my hair and my curls came back to life. They really just needed alot of moisture and I didn't realize how much of a difference it would make until I tried it.
If you all try to use a really moisturizing conditioner and do your DT's weekly I think you will notice a difference. At least I hope you will!

Well..here in MN, we gop through the drastic weather changes and I think its best to use a salon product because they're alot better than drugstore brands. I swear by curls rock- the whole line. Its my favorite.

I switched to a thicker conditioner and my hair was happy...... until it rained. Now my hair looks like it has a layer of grease on it. Oy pick one dry or humid!

I've had to put my Jessicurl stuff to bed for the winter. Just not working for me. Without the summer humidity, I need something to pump up the volume a bit.
Right now I'm alternating between:
1) Deva No Poo, One C, Oscar Blandi Curl Enhancing Spray, ArcAngell
or
2) Suave Aloe Co wash, elucence MBC, CK and HE set me up.

I feel your pain...I'm in Northern NJ where it snowed last night! Try Curls Milkshake, Jessicurl CCSS, BRHG, Boots, Curls Asian Hair Tea condish. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions!

Weird. Colder days always makes my hair look great! I wonder if it has something to do with "cold" being in the 40's and 50's for me and "cold" being in the teens and minus-who-knows-whats for you guys.
Does cold = drier and drier as the temp drops?

Okay, thought I was the only one with this prob because lately my hair has been more reluctant to curl up and be volumous. Glad I'm not the only one. It does make sense since the cold strips my hair of any moisture.

It could be. 40's and 50's would be warm for me right now. It's 20 right now, and I do notice the drier air.
I am definitely making my own conditioner after Christmas. Too many of these nice ones have protein, and I have just gotten too sensitive.
I even had a dream last night that I had a spray can of behentrimonium, and I was using it to try and make my hair softer. This was after I was parachuting in Australia, walked by the Wiccan group who was using large stereo speakers as a Stonhenge type cirlce, got chased off the land by a group because I was too white (spending too much time on the non hair board I guess) and then took a taxi back to the airport. The taxi driver chastised me for trying to tip him because there is no tipping in Australia - or at least in my dream.

Yuppers. Cold weather=dry air=20s and 30s on normal winter days.
My hair is actually loving the cold. Less frizz and volume! I like my hair flat and straight for the first 6 or so inches. Otherwise I get triangle head!

Eventful sleep you had there! I don't notice a ton of difference in my curls between seasons. My curls are TINY bit looser but don't look too different from the summer. I have big problems with humidity though. The winters in MI are pretty bad though, and it's been anywhere from 10-30 degrees in the past few weeks. I've been using OneC, K-pak DT, and CJ bananna leave-in for moisture. To keep the curls more defined and enhanced I use curl keeper and Re:coil with a curl enhancing gel like TT. I'm also trying out Jessicurl products but I don't know how well they will do in the winter!
