Itchy scalp

I am fairly new here.. Lurked for a bit though. I have been co-washing for about 2months, but shampooing only when I get salon services. The last few weeks I have had an itchy scalp and also the back of my neck. I added lemon juice to my conditioner to see if that would help.. So far not so much. Anyone else have this happen? Not sure what it is from, like maybe not using shampoo or what the deal is.. Any ideas?

If you're also itching on your neck, you may be mildly allergic to your new products. That happened to me when I was trying to figure out the CG thing.

Also, there's another thread on this board about itchy scalps. It may help:

Stopping The "Itchies"....
2b/cFi, low density, normal porosity, high elasticity

: Suave Naturals (whatever scent I have on hand)
: Paul Mitchell Round Trip, Tresemme Climate Control Finishing Spray

I'm a hair minimalist: the less time I spend on my hair, the better.

I use Giovanni Triple Tea Treat shampoo. My local giant and Walmart sell it in the organic section. Regular tea trea oil also naturally helps itchy scalp if you just want to try it but use a very small amount because it is very strong. I used to have itchy scalp but since i started henna treatments monthly and using the giovanni low poo it does not itch at all anymore. I could not do the no poo routine. I don't know if it is in my head or not but my scalp felt itchy and dirty going days with just CO washing. It gave me the heebie jeebies but I love what i have learned in the last two years off this site and no longer use silicones, harsh sulfates, and other harsh chemicals.

I also use a low-poo with tea tree oil, and my scalp adores it. I think that sticking with something with tea tree oil or rosemary would be very therapeutic.

How often do you use conditioner on your scalp? Sometimes if you use it too often, it can contribute to ichiness. Be sure to scrub/massage your scalp with your fingernails and rinse well. Or try a scalp brush, which can be found at Sally's or some drugstores for a couple of dollars.

Maybe you're like me and can't handle co-washing. When I started going modified CG (I blow dry and straighten every now and then, hence the mod) I co-washed for a few months, and for a few months I had an itchy scalp with white residue/dandruff-like stuff. I even got a few scabs (maybe from scratching my scalp so much). I stopped co-washing, and all the issues stopped.

Even now when I condition, I have to be careful to only condition from mid-shaft or so, down or else I get itchy/flakey scalp syndrome. My pores must get clogged easily or something.
Aside from watching what my CO touches, I don't do anything special for my sensitive scalp. Unless my weekly ACV rinse helps this type of thing?

Hope this helps!

I occasionally react to stuff, even stuff that was fine when I first tried it. Then I lay off for a while, go a bit with unscented or "hypoallergenic" stuff, and rotate. I got itches from Deva Care, then from my beloved Curl Junkie Curls in a Bottle and CCCC Lite. So, I laid off for a month, and then used it and was okay. But I won't use it two washes in a row. I'll use something else. I switch up every cleanse/condition (or mostly every).

When I got my last rash/itchie bit, I used Jessicurl unscented lowpoo and Abba Pure Gentle lowpoo, Abba Pure Gentle LI and the Pure Style gel and only BB FSG for styler or SS CEJ until it calmed down. Those products don't flare me up so far. Oh, and the Jessicurl WDT unscented for deep condishes.

Interestingly, I had an eczematous patch on my scalp that was there and persistent for more than 12 years and just wouldn't go away. Well, after being CG for six months, it's gone. No eczema patch there. Maybe using gentler cleansers or more naturally healing products? Dunno. But it's amazing. The scalp skin is smooth there. Hooray.

I find rotating several systems helps me. I am really hyperreactive.

Look here for threads that have in the past addressed allergy/itch stuff: ~~LINKS to NC threads on dermatitis, eczema, allergies, itch, iffy ingredients, etc.

In future, you may wanna test (skin test on side of neck or inner arm or behind ear) any new product to see if it will make you itch.
