Default I still can't do the #*&^@ clips!

I should know how to do these by now (have had many haircuts at Ouidad and Devachan in years past) where the stylists used those little metal clips on my hair. I even took pictures, but I'm all thumbs when it comes to styling my own hair.

I was reading something on these boards about inserting clips vertically, like salad tongs, but that came out awful too.

ETA: The problem seems to be that whenever I insert a clip into my hair, that portion sags and falls over to the side.

Can someone help me out, or offer a different way to style that eliminates these awful clips completely? Thanks for any help

I take sections of hair at the root twirl and lift (when tey are 95% dry an then clip securely. Once completely dry, I have faked some nice spirals as if they grow that way out of my head (they do NOT, sadly).

I'm in the same boat. Have had the Deva stylist do it perfectly and even try to show me how, but I can't get it right. Just bought new clips so I can try it again!

did you like the way your hair came out when the stylist clipped it?

I have a fantastic haircutter but I do not like the way my hair comes out when she clipped it, and she is an expert, so I think my hair just does not like that. I have pretty much the same wave root to tip and weird curly crown hair, and clipping made it all look very messy at the top and disrupted the wave so it was straighter at the roots, I didn't like it. I think my hair refuses to be guided.

It took me forever to get that! Just a picture or pictures didn't do it for me. I needed to see the motions involved.

Mostly I just slide the clips in on their sides, going from downhill to up hill. You can lift the clumps of hair in the area before sliding the clips in, or not, as you wish.

My Deva stylist moves the clips around when I'm about halfway dry, which allows the places that couldn't get dry with the clips in to get dry, and gives lift to more areas, with a nice, varied look.

The clips don't work so well for me. I have tried and given up on them several times.

I use the the roller jaw clamps from CHS, and they are by far better than any duckbill clips. I put them in when my hair is about 60-80% dry, I never put them in when my hair is soaking wet. Once you learn how to use them they are fantastic.

I have quite fine hair and the clips constantly snagged. I have pretty non-elastic hair, so when they did snag, they snapped my strands when they stretched. So...

I use octopus clips now and have no problem, get realistic looking lift with no snagging/tearing of my hair.

There are lots of threads on clipping...you can forum search to see a video, see different types of clipping (metal duckbill, small jaw, octopus).

Find a way that works for you. OR..next time to you to Ouidad or Deva, ask for them to let you do a few clips to CORRECT your technique. If you're doing something wrong, let them see you do it and correct you and let you practice a bit.

Same here. I use my octopus clips on hair that's half-way dry or more than half-way dry.

I cannot use the duckbill clips either. My hair always got caught in them. I use jaw clips. But I am jonesing for the CHS clips.

I've been clipping like shellynot does in her video for a while now. Most of the time it turns out well. However, I'm getting really annoyed at the metal clips getting stuck in my curls no matter how carefully I place them. I've used Roller Jaw Clamps before, but had wonky looking lift.
@ Mir, I have a question. When you use your octopus clips, do you let the clip do the lifting (as shown in Jonaton Torch's demo) or do you lift a section of hair first, then put in the clip? I think I have to revisit these clips.

Mir, are you using "baby"-size octopus clips, or larger ones? I will see if can find what you are talking about at Wal-Mart.

Can someone please post a link or pic of the CHS roller clips? I've never heard of those before.

I would also like to see what CHS roller clips are. Is CHS a place where you get them? Only heard of CVS! Also, how do you get the wavy root alittle straighter in the front? Would you use these or something else?

Those are different than the ones I was thinking of. I was thinking of the giant palstic duckbill kind of clips. The ones I saw were pink and chunky.

Seems like Mir's octo clamps would be a fine choice and easy to find lots of places!!

Thanks for posting the link to the roller clips! I watched the video, too.

Does anyone who owns these find that they are better than regular jaw clips or octopus clips? I know Jonathan Torch says they "don't crush the curl" -- I would think that octo clips would have enough space inside the clip area to also not crush the curl? Also, those clips look huuuuge to me and I don't have a lot of hair thickness/volume, so I will prob hold off on trying those. But they do look like they would help a lot!

Thanks so much! Do you think I would just pull the front top root back with the clip to make it alittle less wavy/curly just in that root spot?

What do octopus clips look like? Would they work better for lifting and straightning root?

I've been thinking about trying the roller clamps from Sally's. Has anyone tried those? They look similar to the CHS roller clamps.

CHS roller clamps are lightweight and don't crush your curls. IMO, they are more flexible than Octopus clips and the spring action is weaker, if that makes sense. I would think Octopus clips would work just as well at not crushing your curls.
