Default Another rant about moms!!!!

This is probably the 90th thread I have started about my mom and her issues with my hair...she just makes me SO ANNOYED!!!!!!!!

My old love (if you could call him that! :P ) from high school emailed me to say he was in the area soon, wanted to meet up. I made the mistake of telling my mom, and you know what the FIRST THING she said?

That if I met up with him, I had to straighten my hair.

Dang, is your mother Dominican by any chance? Down there they still think straight and wavy hair are the only "good hair". Perhaps you should get her to read the book "Curly Girl", maybe that way she'll understand your need to let your hair be what it is (and maybe also let you be who you need to be!).

Girls, I am right there with you. My mom asks me (all the time) if I ever BRUSH my hair. I should show her the thread where all the brave souls were showing their brushed hair. At Thanksgiving (in front of everyone in the room), she asked "Do you ever PICK your hair?" And when I said NO, she said "Could we?" It was so annoying.....what am I, the white Freddy "BoomBoom" Washington?????? Geez!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get worse than that. It's so completely rude and offensive I can't even post it. And truth be told my mom has curly hair she just blows it straight. It's real wirey that way too. I guess maybe her generation has a stigma against it. My mom is half native american and her father's hair was stick straight. Maybe she just wants that.
I just tell her I stick a finger in the light socket and leave it at that.

Christine--you may have lots of issues to work out w your mom and your status as an adult.
well, as long as you engage with her in these conversations, you know how it will turn out. you can either go serious, funny, or neutral.

serious: ya know mom, it really hurts me when you say bad things about my hair, i am trying to accept myself and love my curls and your comments do not help

funny or distracting: hey mom, how about those mets?
mom, tell me again how you make that delicious coconut pie
mom, you gave birth to me, it's all your fault..

neutral: i guess you don't like my curls.

One day when you aren't going anywhere, you need to pay your mom a visit, hand her a hair brush, and tell her to have at it if she thinks she can make it look better. If she thinks a hairbrush is going to make you have shiny, smooth, frizz-free hair, she will be surprised.

I'm really lucky. My mom has always been very supportive. Though I have done many stupid things in my life, she has never been critical. She is very selective on her words. I wish I could be more like her at times with my kids.
