Default Ugggghh!!! Hair is SO ugly right now

I don't why, but for about the last month my hair has been soooo frizzy and undefined, it's unbelievable. My hair seriously hasn't been this bad in a long time. My hair is frizzy in the SHOWER, when it's loaded with conditioner. The top layer especially is really straightish, frizzy, and undefined. And I have a ton of spider-webby frizz. I can't pick up one curl without picking up the 5 that are attacthed to it.

I also think I'm pulling out too much hair the shower - my bottom layer is a lot thinner than the top layer. My haircut looks really horrible right now. Also, my layers are "splitting" again. Like, the top and bottom layers are such different textures and lengths and stuff that they separate from each other very easily. It's hard to explain, but it's like I have two different head of hair on my head and they don't mix together. It's UBER annoying.

ARG! I had one really FABULOUS hairday in early November, when i used the old Suave Milk and honey, and HE SMU gel. I don't know if it was the products, or the weather (I was in Tennessee - it was colder and possibly more humid?), but I had a really really great hair day that held up for a long time. I went back to California, and since then my hair has been CRAP!

It makes me really sad and pissed off. :x I don't know what's causing it. my products? I dunno. You know, I've never really been good at this whole "curly hair" thing. I mean, I just kinda buy products and see if they make my hair less frizzy or not, but there's never really a huge difference, you know? Like, even when I try something like Suave vs. Devacurl, I'm never like "OMG!!! MY HAIR IS SO MUCH LESS FRIZZY!". I've never had that EVER. I'm always like, "ehh...my hair is a bit more defined, I guess."

But anyways. This is both a rant and a cry for help, I guess. These are the products I'm curently using:

New Suave Coconut CO
DevaCare Condish
Garnier Sleek+Shine Leave In
HE SMU gel

I thought maybe the cone in teh leave in was getting to me, so I slarified today and used Jane Carter Nourishing Cream instead of Garnier. I also didn't plop with a t-shirt, I just air dried. Pretty much same result as yesterday - uber frizzy, even wehn soaking wet, undefined, poofy, etc.

WTF AM I DOING WRONG?

I don't have pictures yet, but I will soonish.

Edit: Okay, i took pictures and decided that my hair was improved from yesterday. Some parts are stll very frizzy, and overall my hair is very poofy, but It's a better than it has been I suppose. maybe it was the Garnier leave in that did it. But still, my hair is still pretty frizzy. Will post pics laters.

I can't help you a lot but I do think it was a good idea that you clarified and started over. I know a lot of people like the GF leave-in but if you look through reviews on makeupalley.com and on here then you'll also see that a lot of people have trouble with frizzy hair from it.

My hair gets that way if I let it dry too much in a towel (even a microfiber towel.) I put in curl keeper for frizz or whatever products I'm using (a curl enhancing one, a gel, a lighter product for frizz and sometimes a leavein) and then dry it a little and let it air dry on it's own for awhile. Then I use a diffuser or something to help with drying faster. If I let it dry too much in a towel or leave a towel on at all then it will dry too much and will end up undefined and frizzy.

Maybe you should use a sulfate-free poo? I think it could be either protien build up or cone build up. (amodimethicone from both the devacare and garnier) Does your hair feel dry and haylike or just gunky?

Currently: Trying to stop straightening so much. Using Elucence conditioner and whatever works for me.

I think that it's also best to clarify. I've also noticed that when i have to do the t shirt wrap, i do it for five minutes tops, in addition to that, I think that it has to do with the amount of gel and leave in that you leave in your hair. I usually put less than a dime size of leave and a dime size of gel.

I have been styling my hair for about three years and my hair keeps getting better and better. I have a variety of routines but have cut down on experimenting products and found a good stylist who cuts my hair (although he cuts it wet, its hard to find one where I live, but I am happy with him).

You might be sensitive to the cone in the two conditioners. I use a non sulfate poo, no poo, low poo or cream of nature once or twice a week.
I have to do that for just regular ole no protein no cone conditioner buildup too. My hair sucks things up and won't let go.
If I"m having days of crappy hair I shampoo with a no sulfate, if that doesn't work I do vinegar, and if it still is awful or I need a good hair day gauranteed then I just shampoo and do a DT.
Unless you're in a state that's still warm and humid I bet you need a heavier conditioner now.
Even OneC lately isn't doing it for me. I've been using REgis olive oil conditioner and then the Curl junkie hibiscus and banana butta leave in. It's weird because usually I don't need a thick conditioner but I have the heat on and it hasn't rained for about a week

Have u tryed using a cream styler ? i know during winter i switch to cream stylers like Re:coil or pink boots curl cream..and i get no frizz. im actually using those 2 paired together and am getting great clumpy curls. im also in CA and right now my curls are loving the rain storm we are having right now. i guess my hair/curls likes the mouister in the air or something.

Thanks for all the advice!! I will try a non-sulfate shampoo. I've been meaning to get Activate Poo but I haven't had the time.

I haven't tried a cream styler...I know a place that sells Re:coil near me, though. Maybe I'll post a thread on the Review forum to see about other cream stylers.

And I actually haven't been outside much, lol, I'm studying for finals so my hair never really gets to feel the rain. ^^

I really want to try CurlKeeper, hmm. I think possibly that would help with my frizz a lot.

Medusahair: Where I live it isn't exactly warm and humid, but it's in the 50s and lately it's been raining (well I guess than it's REALLY humid lol). I don't know if I need a heavier condish or not...Is it possible that my hair is getting overconditioned? I dunno.

Angiecurls: My hair never really feels hay-like, but it feels kinda coarse in texture. Like, how when some people's hair is soaking wet, it's silky and stuff? Mine isn't like that. My hair is actually soft right now...but not soft in the silky soft way (my hair is never silky soft)...it's soft in the kinda cotton candy way right now. Okay, I'm getting really ramble-y now.

The point is, I don't think I'm getting protein overload, but I've never really known if I'm protein sensitive or not, so I don't know what it really feels like on me. My hair just felt (and still kinda feels) gunky.

Hm...maybe I'll stop using the Garnier leave in, get some kind of cream styler and non-sulfate poo. And maybe order Curlkeeper from Curlmart as a crimbo present to myself.

Oh! I have to figure out plopping. I need a new way, or something. Less time plopping, maybe.

I really need a routine change, I think. And a new haircut (possibly).

Okay, i'll stop babbling to myself now.

PS: Sorry, no pics yet. ^^;; I'll get up tomorrow hopefully.

Yes overconditioning is possible too. I was having some awful hair days until I added in a cream styler. Rusk being Gutsy or Loreal out of bed, or boots, recoil on some of the days. I used Gutsy today and my hair is real curly. It's overcast here and 60 during the day.
Boy I hate it when I have to play guess why my hair is acting up. I always go scrambling until it finally calms down again. I take those bad hair days seriously! After all there's a big ole mirror in the bathroom

SapphireWingstar,

I'm sorry about your frustrations!

I think most of us get them, and they are a pain.

I understand what you mean about hair not being silky. I have a bumpier texture. It's never silky the way that fine hair feels silky. I just have a coarser hair texture, so there isn't a whole heck of a lot I can do with that. Frizz is a common companion. For me, air drying leaves me frizzy, yet with less volume than diffusing. If I am patient with my diffusing, I have less frizz. If I am in a hurry, more frizz. I like plopping, but not everyone does.

Maybe you just have a naturally coarser texture.

I've not run into much cone overload, so I can't help you much there. I had it a couple of times, and it just felt like there was a layer of something on my hair. Stuff would come off if I rubbed my hair between my fingers. I'd get this with dimethicone and amodimethicone. Some people tolerate it better.

I can describe what protein buildup feels like on me, but I'm not sure if it will help you. In a stronger form, my hair feels like straw or dry summer grass. I'll get this from wheat. From other types of protein, my hair will feel brassy (like blonde dye gone wrong), have a dry coaty feel that I just can't explain, or will be much more difficult to comb. It feels like I really have to pull hard and it sort of feels like my individual hairs are sticking the the teeth of the comb. It also just doesn't feel as conditioned as it would without a protein buildup.

I do use Low-Poo once a week as it seems that even tiny amounts of protein bother me now. It really gets on my nerves.

You may well need a thicker conditioner, although it doesn't seem like you're having super cold winter weather. You could do a trial of something thicker.

Also, for my texture, I have found that things with glycerin realy helped out with the feel of my hair. It was the closest thing I've had to silky.

I've had a few undefined days myself. After using all the same products too. For me, when this happens, it's almost always weather-related. The last 2 wks were very cold & snowy = great hair days. Then a few days ago, it warmed up (to 35F) and the fog & rain returned. OFten, it's the extreme change in weather, more than the actual weather itself. I actually up the GF leave-in, & I find CJ & even One C make it worse. Adding a cream styler usually does help. Seems to add another layer to soften & buffer against the weather.

You know, I find that my hair gets frizzier when I use a leave-in. It seems to negate the holding power of a gel. I know that's not most people's experience, it's just an odd thing about my hair.

Hmmm. That is interesting.I know that my curls are not as tight when I use a leave-in. Maybe it literally does keep the gel from bonding as tightly and 'shrink-wrapping' around each strand (as Ouidad explained what aloe is supposed to do). In extreme conditions though, I opt for the frizz control I get from the extra cream layers.
