Volume question

Probably a dumb question because I should really know how to do this by now, but how do you get volume in your hair without causing a frizzy mess and then keep the volume from collapsing? My hair goal is to do this:

That is Kimberly Schlapman from the country group Little Big Town. I love her hair and we have the same curl pattern (I even double checked with my hair stylist to be sure - LOL!) but I can't quite get her volume and I am not quite that long yet but working on it. I start out sort of ok with volume but then it falls kind of flat within a hour or so. I have been playing with clips and I diffuse, but if I play with it too much, it frizzes. Hoping maybe somebody has an idea I hadn't considered.

I just did a web search because I didn't "know of" her. In most of the pictures, her hair wasn't as curly as that picture. It was softer, less frizzy and not sure if it was done mechanically?? In the other picture I found with her hair like that, it was really frizzy. I find that when I over moisturize, my hair has tighter, but frizzier curls. It may be that it's the trade off for achieving the volume and curl.

Diffusing upside down until the curls "set" helps with volume.

I definitely believe some of her pictures were touched up with a curling iron, but I have seen her a few other times during shows and it isn't as perfect looking which is probably closer to what I am aiming for. A little messier curl, a little more realistic, not so perfectly shaped (since of course I don't have a personal stylist on hand, LOL!). I did see she gets the same kind of weird shrinkage around the temples I do when she is outside thanks to humidity. I find that amusing for some reason.

I did wonder if that was going to be the trade off. A little more frizz to get the volume. When I do my normal routine to get no frizz, I get no volume. Nicely formed curls, but very flat. I will have to experiment more with drying it upside down and see what that does

I discovered yesterday that I also get no volume with my regular routine. Somehow I never really noticed until my sister mentioned that my hair looked kind of "weighted" down. I have no frizz but my hair stays close to my head.

I tried an experiment this morning and so far it is working (4.5 hours after doing).

I did my regular routine, but with half the product I usually use. I was nervous my hair would be a frizzy mess but I was pleasantly surprised.

I really made sure it was very well distributed and then I pixie diffused upside down until my curl was set. Then I airdried until 100% dry and very gingerly SOTC. My hair was so much softer and fluffier!!! The curls were still there but my hair has much more body and lift to it.

I do have a tiny bit of frizz, but nothing to really notice.

I'm dying to get my hands on some Tweek this week so that I can try to get some hold so that it doesn't deflate.

I got some compliments this morning from several coworkers who say they like the "fluffy curls" look a lot. So, I guess I was overdoing the products in my zeal to get rid of frizz.

I haven't figured out how I will refresh if I need to this afternoon but, maybe I won't bother until I get the Tweek.

what i do for great vlume without mesing up my curls:

i grab 3 normal bigish clips, and at the top pull on side over and clp it to the other side, do this again to the other side, then to the back.

good luck
I am betting there is some hairspray on her head

Although my hair even laughs at hairspray. It will look good for about an hour and then it's like I never used any. I cannot keep volume -my hair is just not meant for it I guess.

Maybe it's my old eyes, but I can barely see details of what her hair looks like in that pick, other than a lot of blonde hair. Any bigger pics, Rednaturalcurls?

Those are great pics! I love her hair too now! Why is it that some people can rock some frizz but I look like a hot mess when my hair looks like hers?

I will have to try using less product for styling. I have a diffuser so maybe it's time that I experiment with it. Those pics are inspiring.

I've been clipping my hair like the Ouidad video shows on her website. I think it's called "clipping for volume". I just clip the sides, however, not the top. That seems to help me. I also bend over and fluff the roots around about mid-day to add a bit of volume.

There are tons of women with great hair (like I love Melina Kanakaredes from CSI NY) but the curl pattern is different and realistically my hair will never do that even if I wanted it to. This is the first one I have seen that I can actually pull off and look right because she is so close to what I have. And yes, she does rock the frizz really well. If I have that much, it can start to look kind of rough, but I don't mind a little. To me, it looks more touchable and natural unlike Taylor Swift and her overly curling ironed hair. Not that her hair isn't pretty, but it aggravates me that they curling iron it to death.

And I love that you said it's just a lot of blonde hair (in the first pic). That's exactly what I think when I see pics of myself. It's like wow, look at that mass of hair. LOL! Not so much when I cut it short, but when it gets longer, it can get very lion mane looking.
