PLZ HELP! DESCRIBE THIS HAIRCUT! PICS
I have the exact same hair type as shakira (in these pix), except mine is generally one lengthed, longer and very bulky in the back.
I'm going to Curly Hair Institute on monday and I only have these small pics to show my stylist. HOW DO I DESCRIBE THIS HAIRCUT? It looks as if there are lots of different lengthed layers (long and short)- which I LOVE !!
This is my first *curly cut*...I'm scared and need lots of advice and help For starters I wouldn't know how to describe this cut AND....how do I ask to get rid of bulk in the back (without razoring??)
Thanks so much in advance

I think that's a 90 degree layered cut with shorter layers on the front, but with the pics she should be able to tell what you want, most stylists actually prefer seeing pics than just getting an explanation that maybe is not given with complete accuracy.

I think the pics say it all. It looks like she has a couple levels of longer layers done. As long as the stylist sees that you want the longer layers and not tons of different lengths chopped all around your head then I think it should be pretty easy to get that cut. The layers will take out a lot of bulk and will also make some people's hair curlier. Good luck!

I think a layered cut like this will work with your hair as you described it. As Banjocurl said, try to avoid tunnel cutting, or any kind of thinning or razoring.

Contrary to popular belief they are not walking around the salon looking to give as many tunnel cuts as they can and duping their clients into one.
You'll enjoy the whole experience there, I'm sure.

Thanks for the replies
Sorry if this may sound dumb or repetitive but....why is the *tunnel cut* so bad?
On the frizzoff section, I did not see any example pics of this "tunnel cut"

I think the reason it has such negative connotations is because at a curly event one curltalker was given a tunnel cut without her permission and she was very upset; not only by the cut but by the whole experience.
She felt the owner was insensitive and making fun of her and she was very saddened by the whole thing. Michelle or Gretchen then wrote on the the thread that Jonathan felt terrible and was very sorry for offending her and giving her something that she did not consent to.
She of course still has to wait for it to grow out which we all know can take forever for hair to grow.
The purpose for a tunnel cut is to remove bulk from 3c and above hair and also some straight haired clients have asked him for the same cut. It is fairly extreme as he removes whole clumps all the way to the scalp.
I know a girl personally (teenager who hates her big hair) who was thrilled with her tunnel cut.

Wow. that is pretty extreme. I think long layers should be fine for me (like shakira). My hair isn't excessively bulky and I don't think I want this "tunnel cut".
Thanks for all the info mrfhnl !!

i tried to find the thread but all the posts by this lady have been removed from the board except 2 very recent ones. anyway she drew a picture of what the tunnel cut looked like and it seemed pretty extreme. anyway, it is very important to be assertive and state emphatically what you want and what you don't, and if something odd happens, stop them right there and question it. hopefully you will have a wonderful experience.

To be perfectly honest I learned about that technique in beauty school but nobody called it a "tunnel cut", just thinning with regular scissors, it's in my Milady textbood! So I wonder if he actually invented that or just thinks he did.
In any case, I think it's a horrid thing to do, unless of course the person is actually willing AND understands what's being done. I think it was in 1996 or '97 that someone thinned my hair at the crown to give me the look I liked (short on the front but not as short on the sides, almost like a mullet but more attractive), since my hair there was probably less than 3" long and hair doesn't grow evenly I didn't notice any difference later on. It's extremely ironic that only a few years later my hair got pretty thin at the crown and I went back to that cut because it helped me cover it up. I let my hair grow out but later it got even thinner while on thyroid meds (but thanks to some great advice I found here I was able to regrow my hair! ).
