New Curly Girl Book is out!!

I broke down and ordered from Barnes and Noble yesterday since I had a giftcard. I didn't really get anything from the first book since I read it after discovering NC, but this thread makes me hopeful. The self-trimming part sounds like just what I need!

my primary reason for getting the book was the self trimming part too I don't know that you'll learn anything new we've gotten so much great info on these threads. But, in addition to the trimming she has some new recipes and the way she suggests handling our hair when washing is a little different for wavies. I think you'll enjoy it. The DVD is helpful too, visuals are always great!

Fractal - love it! Will definitely buy or borrow the book.

For those who have the new book - how does she do on naturally coily/kinky hair? I wasn't impressed with her chapter in the original book although her general advice for curlies worked for me.

Cala Renee told me she is hosting a book tour appearance for Lorraine either at her salon in Beverly or a larger place close by - save the date! 2/7/11 12:30 -2:30pm

I enjoyed the book, as I thought I would. I didn't expect to agree with every word (for example I absolutely hate duckbill clips and will never use them). But I don't usually like every word of any book I read. There are things I found useful and things I didn't. Things that pertained to me and things that didn't. Things that I think could have been left out and replaced with other things (as someone else said - get rid of the horoscopes and add links to info online). But I read it cover to cover. Next will be the dvd.
Well worth $10 for me.

I got my book yesterday but only got a chance to flip thru a little bit.

For those who have both books: is it worth loaning the first book to my stylist to read while I read the new one? Or just wait until I'm done and loan the 2nd to her? I don't know how much info is redundant. What do you think?

SF Bay Area, CA * "The Angel-Goddess-Guru of Haircoloring"

I definitely think it's worth loaning either of the books to your hairdresser!

Just watched the dvd and really enjoyed it. All the hair models were gorgeous and their hair was beautiful. Some of them looked very familiar. Don't know if it's because they are members here or on youtube or just from seeing their pics in the book. They all had amazing hair.
And I loved Lorraine's little curl tattoo on her wrist. : )

If she's interested, I'd wait until you finish the second book. As I said in my above post, after being on this website, I don't really think I learned anything. The second book has more information then the first. The DVD is the best part.

I FINALLY got my book (it took FOREVER to arrive in the mail!), and I agree with those that said that the second book is a LOT better than the first! It had the same basic info that was in the first edition, but it included a lot more tips, better explanations, and things like that. I also love that she added more hair types this time around to further explain the different kinds of curls -- just Corkscrew, Botticelli, and Wavy Curls was way too general and not at all descriptive enough. I, too, think the DVD was really nice, and it helps to visualize the motions being done. If you're a newbie looking for some CG insight, the new book is a must have! Although there are so many more technique options and some different approaches here that I absolutely love that are not featured in the book, the book is a fabulous starting point for any curly.

Oh, and curlyjenn10 -- the self-trimming tips were amazing!!! I learned SOO much from them, and the way she explained it made it so easy to visualize. I might even attempt cutting my own hair next time I need a trim instead of asking a family member to do it, or at least have someone else read the "do-it-yourself haircutting section" first! And I'm really wimpy when it comes to cutting my own hair -- I don't like the possibilities of screwing up so easily!

The book definitely goes into a lot of detail on the self trimming tips! If that's what you're looking to learn most about, get it! It explained it so thoroughly -- and the DVD was a great reference, too.

Okay--another question. When I call it up on Amazon, it's running for about $9 and it doesn't say a word about a DVD. How do I know I'm getting the right one?

(BTW, you can look inside the book on Amazon, and I've already read a big section on cutting! Bonus.)

Can someone please ensure me that if I order from Amazon, I'm getting the right edition and the DVD?

make sure it has the dvd. the dvd is in an envelope inside the front cover.

i ordered a book for my granddaughters (finger plays) on amazon that came with a dvd. HOWEVER, most of the sellers merely had the book, did not include the dvd. i ultimately had to cancel the book and was able then to buy it direct from amazon with the dvd. it was tricky -- i read description that said dvd, then apparently it gave me sellers that only had the book.
just read the description carefully i guess. i ordered mine from amazon and got the dvd. if it gives you different sellers and not just direct from amazon, then be careful.

Okay, I ordered it. I finally noticed that on the pic, in the upper corner of the book cover, it says "DVD inside." Weird how it doesn't mention it at all in the description--and of course, the testimonies are all for the first book. So I was nervous that it was the wrong edition.

Should have it next week!

Good deal for people that haven't bought the book yet, that the price has dropped. I wonder if that's because it's selling so well on Amazon. Will be interesting to see if B&N matches the price.

Like many of you, I didn't find the first book very helpful. I found it fascinating to read, but didn't actually really understand CG until I came on this site and spent ages reading/asking questions.

First time I tried CG going of the book, I just couldn't understand the ingredients I needed to avoid and all the scientific stuff (this site is amazing for those who really know their stuff and giving product advice - I mean, there is so much to learn- that the book just couldn't possible cover all of it!) I started co-washing with any old conditioner that said 'natural' and ended up with lank, greasy hair and had so many fights with my mum over it all!Ah memories lol!

So I wasn't interested about the new update, but you have all convinced me to buy it for the hair cutting tips alone!

Now, its out in March here in the UK, but you can get some second hand of sellers. Am I not going to be able to watch the dvd if I get it from one of these sellers?

Is it really likely that they will do a differently formatted dvd for this? The fact it comes with a DVD is actually barely mentioned on Amazon uk anyway.

Hi,

I am in the Uk and bought a copy from amazon, second hand copy but as new, not a mark on it. it came with the CD and this works fine on my laptop. Cost about 10 including postage

I did not have the first book but have been CG for a few years with the help of this site. I love the book and CD and it has clarified a few things for me. Have already used the trimming advice for some of my hair round my face, due a cut anyway so nothing to lose! My hair looks loads better since following the CD demonstration on cleansing , conditioning styling, a few subtle differences which has creating a load more ringlets, and overall my hair seems to sit better.

I also showed it to my 8 year old who has looser curls than me and she liked it, all the pictures appealed to her and she let me finger detangle her hair last night for the first time and it worked great for her. Kept telling her that this is how Taylor Swift does it!

Just need to give it to my hairdresser now!
