Apricot Kernel Oil?

Has anyone ever used it? I hadn't heard of this oil until a few weeks ago (am I the only one? I guess I should have known -- they make an oil of everything!), but supposedly it's amazing, so I'm going to be buying some to seal with! I'm so excited, since this is the first oil I'm buying to use on my hair! If you've used it (or even HEARD of it!! ), do you like it? How heavy/light is it? Thanks so much!

I actually JUST purchased some Apricot Kernel Oil this week and was planning to test it today in a hot oil treatment along side a few other oils in my regimen. So as soon as i use it and get some results, i'll reply again

Thank you so much! I was afraid no one had ever heard of it or used it before! I have no experience with oils thus far -- I guess I was hoping I purchased the magic one.

Okay, test is complete

And i like it! My hair is nice and soft and especially shiny this time. Now i didn't see a major difference between Apricot Kernel Oil and my mother oils, but there was some. Enough that I could i tell i did something different.

I used it in conjunction with Vegetable Glycerin, Avocado Oil, and a touch of jojoba. Applied it to wet hair, used a plastic cap, then sat under the hair dryer for the better part of an hour.

Nice shiny, bouncy curls!

Thanks a bunch!! I'm glad I picked a good one. From your description, it sounds like a medium heavy oil?

Thanks again! Very excited about using this now!!

Actually it's a pretty light oil. Very similar to grapeseed oil in texture.

Ooh, thank you! Since you seem to know so much about oils, I wanted to ask you another question: my hair seems to like EVOO, and I've heard that it's on the heavier side. Would my hair like or dislike a lighter oil like the Apricot Kernel Oil, or would it be too light? Sorry for all my questions -- I have NO experience with oils! From your posts, I know you use them all the time and are experienced with them. Enlighten me!

From what I've read, Olive Oil and Apricot Oil would kinda be an even match. They both have the ability to "penetrate the hair's cortex". So they'd pretty much be even i think on paper.

My experience with the two: I don't like the smell of Olive Oil on my hair and it weighs my hair down too much when i style. So, I just prefer lighter oils so my curls don't droop lol

Avocado Oil and Jojoba oil are also two light oils that pretty much work as well as Olive Oil and Apricot Oil.

Oh my goodness -- thanks SOOO much!! I suppose I picked a winner -- and that doesn't happen very often -- so I'm pretty excited!! It sounds like I could just use EVOO on my hair, since it doesn't get weighed down very easily, but I probably would prefer the scent of the Apricot Kernel Oil. Thanks so much for putting up with all my questions. You are a wealth of oil-related information!!!

I finally got it, and I tried sealing with it! My first time sealing, and it worked! YAY! My hair was so much better -- I didn't realize something like Apricot Kernel Oil could do that. It's great -- actually nice and light, and not greasy at all! I used it all over on my hair, but the results were most noticeable on the back sections of hair, and the underneath layer, both of which are normally poofy and frizzy. My broken hairs weren't as noticeable, and it made my hair look great. It still feels moisturized (this is 2nd day hair now), and I'm loving the results!

Thanks, BeMoore for your help! I'm really loving this stuff!

Can you please describe how you seal? I have some Apricot Kernel Oil but never thought to try sealing. I've been curious about sealing with an oil, but never fully understood exactly how to do it correctly.
- 2C - Coarse Canopy & med/fine underlayers
- MOP C Hydrating 'poo
- LOreal Natures Therapy Moisturizing condish, ION Effective Care, Garnier S&S (old formula)
- treatments: CJ Curl Rehab, CJ Repair Me!
- plopping, diffusing, and clipping the roots
Ha ha, I'm no expert either! I'll try to guide you in the right direction, but that was my first time sealing! It worked well, though, so maybe I finally did something right, LOL!

From what I understand, sealing is meant to keep the moisture that is in your hair IN, so it doesn't get lost in space somewhere! That's perfect for me, because I just lose more and more moisture throughout the day. I did my normal right-outta-the-shower routine...scrunch all the water out of my hair (and use the extra condish that I didn't rinse out as LI). I then applied my oil. I wasn't too stingy with my oil, since it felt so light in my hair (I'm hearing recently a couple of drops for wavies, but I put a little more in -- us coarsies don't get weighed down too easily!). I put a pea sized amount of oil in my hand and sort of gently smoothed it down the length of my hair (probably from my ears down). I felt like there was still oil on my hands, so did a little scrunching with the remainder of it. I repeated this process again, and I really tried to focus on the underneath layer of my hair, the least wavy but most frizzy and poofy part of my hair. It worked really well -- not a lot of frizz, and my underlayer was great! What I really have to do is learn to use this stuff on 2nd day hair, when the extra diffusing REALLY poofs me out. But, if you do wind up trying it, lemme know how it works! We have similar hair, so I'd be curious to know how your hair responds to it. Mine was definitely more consistent -- don't know how the oil affected it, but as long as it worked, I'm totally okay with that!! It actually wasn't greasy at all, which surprised me. I think that was why I never tried sealing with the EVOO. I was afraid it would grease my hair up. But, so far, my hair hasn't met an oil it didn't like! I might try it with the EVOO next, though, just for comparison.

AWESOME! Thanks so much for the step-by-step. I'm nervous about sealing and although I always read product reviews before trying out, it's the method that seems to elude me for the first few tries - LOL.

I was nervous, too -- I think because I wasn't completely sure about how much oil to use -- but it worked so well, that I haven't gone a freshly-washed hair day without applying it! As long as you don't go overboard, you should be good. If you have a lighter oil -- like almond or jojoba or something like that -- that's good to try first, just to see how your hair responds. I'm actually going to try sealing with EVOO soon, just to see what it would do and how heavy an oil my hair likes. If you try it, definitely let me know how it works out for you!

Cool, thank you! Next time I'm by a Whole Foods I'll have to see if I can find it, and if I can't I'll have to check out Amazon!

Does the apricot kernel oil smell bad on hair or when applied near the scalp?

I'm planning to use an oil that won't smell bad. I've used coconut oil and olive oil on my hair before and though I really like how they work on my hair, I don't like the smell especially coconut oil.

Thanks
I love it on my hair as well. And no it doesn't really have a smell to it. It's very light and surprisingly slippy. A little goes a long way.
