Curl Junkie or Spiral Solutions???
Who likes what better and why?
I have fine hair and Kathymack thinks both products are the best....and Im gonna get a lil bit of both but until I get them I wanted to see what everyones saying about them...
soooooo review away!!!
I like some CJ products and some SS products. I haven't found that any particular "line" suits me better than others; I just pick products from lots of lines and then mix and match. From CJ I love Daily fix and Curl Queen, and I recently became a fan of SS Firm hold gel.
BOTH!!!! Seriously. I use SS CEJ almost every day. And I use CJ products (MOST Of them) every day. It's pretty common for me to use SS CEJ along with either CJCQ or CJAFL as my styling products.
NOT using SS CEJ with either of those gels doesn't give me as much curl as I like. SS CEJ is a curl enhancer, not a gel. So, that particular product wouldn't get used in place of a gel.
I haven't tried any of the other SS products. But, I've tried just nearly every CJ product and love them all!
both are great. of course, it is not likely that your hair will like the entire line of either, and i think that is why they have many products to work for different types of hair.
the ss deeply decadent moisturizing treatment is an hg for me. i use it as a deep treatment, and as my conditioner and leave in. i use it daily.
i love many cj products, some i use almost every day, some once in a while, depending on dewpoint and there are some i never tried as i suspect my hair would not love them.
you can always email marsha at info@curljunkie. com and describe your hair and ask her recommendations. both spiral solutions and curljunkie have outstanding customer service by the owners!
Some of both. I like and use CJCC Lite regularly, CJCC sometimes, and CJDF a lot. I like and regularly use SSPT, SSDD, and SSFHG, and sometimes use SSCC (don't think I'll repurchase) and protein spray.
I don't care for most other CJ products I've tried (Aloe Fix Gel & CIAB to name a couple) or for the other SS products that I didn't mention.
I agree that both have excellent customer service. I like that you can get SS products unscented.
I have used both and like them equally. Here are the products that I've used from both:
1. Hibiscus and Banana Deep Fix Moisturizing Conditioner
2. Coffee CoCo Curl Cream
3. Hibiscus and Banana Honey Butta Leave-in
SPIRAL SOLUTIONS-Plan on trying more*
Deeply Decadent Moisturizing Treatment
Try samples from both, and use them throughout the year to see which is better on your hair during the different seasons.
Following GreatCurls' format, here are the products I've used:
I've tried several products from each line and like some and dislike some! Of course my hair has different properties though...
-Curl Enhancing Jelly: Give great shine, not much curl enhancing on its own. Like it better mixed with something like KCCC
-Firm Hold Gel: hated it. No enhancement and get limp hair.
-Deeply Decadent: Moisturized pretty well, only had a trial size.
-Repairing Protein Treatment: Liked this but only had a trial size.
-Caitlin's condish: Love this! I use it when I need an extra protein punch.
(almost too many to name, haha. Most of these were samples from kathymack!)
-Aloe Fix lite: Love this. Great clumps and curl enhancing. Much better than the regular Aloe Fix.
-Beauticurls condish: Love this too. I think this is a better summer condish though.
-Curl Fix PT: Works great but stinky! I think I like the new PT better.
-Curl Rehab: Love it. I use it as my DT!
-Beauticurls leave-in: Didn't like this at all. Made my hair too soft.
-CCCC lite: blech. No wave enhancement, just flat hair.
-CCCC: way too heavy and no wave enhancement.
-H&B condish: was ok but no room in the rotation for it!
ive tried both lines....
i love curl junkie better :)
Both lines are my HG lines, though I'm going through a fragrance sensitivity to the CJ. I have to pick and choose what to use. I like SS because I can get everything unscented.
I will add that unlike racerwife, I CAN use the CEJ on it's own for hold as well as enhancement. SS's etsy site says that it has light hold, and it's just enough for me to enhance and give me soft, touchable hold that stays. I used to think I needed a hard hold gel on top but I don't usually. I can also use UFDCM the same way. HTH!
They're both good lines; however, if I had to choose one, I think Curl Junkie would win every time. I've used the majority of both lines, and if my reordering statistics are anything to go by, I constantly make sure I have various CJ products around... but I'm still working on my first round of SS and don't think I'll be re-ordering much.
In SS, I like Caitlin's Conditioner. It's got protein, humectants, moisture - all the goodies. It is, however, a little oily for me to use every day, and doesn't seem to like hard water for some reason. The curl enhancing jelly and firm hold gel are okay for me, but I'm aloe sensitive in low dews and these products are just too aloe-heavy for me to use year round. They also don't have much hold for me, alone or together, and omg the frizz (I suspect I just haven't been generous enough in my usage, but it's not been warm enough for me to test my theory). I was less than impressed by Deeply Decadent and the protein spray (seemed nice at first - but didn't do much after that first usage).
I like all of CJ, but my favourites are Curl Rehab, CCCC, Daily Fix, and Curl Fix. They do what they say on the tin - what more could you possibly want?
I really think that depending on the hair type-- you'll get a different answer everytime. SS IMO is made for wavies, wurlies and looser curlies (or it works optimally in these groups). CJ IMO is a more well-rounded and developed line that almost every type and texture can find several things to use and love.
-SS beats CJ in terms of playing with other products well. I've never had a bad reaction using my SS stuff with drugstore or boutiquey stuff.
-CJ beats SS in terms of formulation. Marsha is just Marsha is just.. Marsha. :)
- SS is cheaper, but CJ lasts longer (for me anyway-- b/c of the formulation I suspect. I dont need as much).
Who wins? CJ for me.
but I still have drawer's full of Shantelle's stuff in my house. LOLOL!:toothy8:
ss dd -- as a curl cream
while i love cj products, i also love ss dd.
and, i found a new use for it this week.
i now use it as a curl styling cream! after blotting water out of my hair, i coat my hands with it and scrunch/style my hair the way i want it to air dry (or diffuse).
it's been working so well! not too heavy this way, coats my hair, yet leaves it soft and curly.
I love both SS and CJ, and use one or the other every single time I style my hair. The only other product line I use at the moment is Marie Dean (really love her curly styling cream and red clover/honey leave-in).
Here are my favorite styling combos. With all of them, I supersoak, plop, and air dry or diffuse. If I have a few flyaways once hair is dry, I use a little MD as a pomade and smooth it over dry hair. (Note: If I use too much and hair looks greasy, I turn the diffuser back on for a couple minutes and re-scrunch). In high dews I finish with MD as a pomade all the time; in fall/winter/spring, some of the time.
My hair is 3A, fine (although there is a lot of it), and not porous. It tangles easily; I have an oily scalp; and I easily get over-conditioned. Consequently, I use small amounts of the creamier products, and always apply to soaking wet hair or supersoak to enhance product distribution.
Gels for extra hold (SS FHG and CJ CQ) are applied after plopping. When I use CJ CQ, which is very concentrated, I only use a quarter-size amount and mix it with a little water prior to use.
Summer (high dews)
CJ CCCC (regular) + SS CEJ
MD CSC or MD mango pudding + SS CEJ
Fall/Winter/Spring (moderate to low dews)
CJ CCCC lite + CJ CQ or SS FHG
CJ CCCC lite (used alone when I braid wet hair and pin up)
MD leave-in + SS CEJ + SS FHG
CJ beauticurls leave-in + CIAB
MD CSC + SS CEJ
rinse-out conditioner (all year long)
CJ smoothing conditioner
CJ curl rehab
CJ repair me
Does anyone else notice a little frizz from the SS CEJ? I've been going back and forth between that and AOMM and so far seem to get better clumping and less frizz with the AOMM. How much do you all use of the CEJ? I used about 2-3 quarter size. I love the SS FHG though, finally a natural gel that holds! and isn't sticky!
I've done a similar routine with CJ CIAB in place of SS CEJ; CIAB gives me slightly less hold then CEJ, but hair is shinier, so it's a trade-off. Some people like to SOTC with just a tiny bit of CIAB to add shine and definition even if they don't use it as their main product.
If I use CEJ as my only hold product, without extra gel on top, I always use a curl cream underneath (to supply additional hold). If I use a leave-in conditioner under CEJ instead, then I top with FHG (lightly scrunched in after plopping). My favorite curl creams to use under CEJ are: CJ CCCC (summer only), CJ CCCC lite, and MD CSC.
I always use 3 full pumps of CEJ for my BSL hair. I supersoak afterwards (to maximize product distribution) and then plop for 20-30 minutes before air drying or diffusing.
So, to summarize, my two main ways of using CEJ are:
1. leave-in + CEJ + FHG
2. curl cream + CEJ + SOTC (with leave-in or curl cream)
Basically, I use CEJ almost every single time I style, except on those occasional times when I substitute CIAB instead, or when I use a stronger gel (CJ CQ) in place of both CEJ and FHG.
I have been doing your #1 styling routine, maybe it's just my hair and the dead sea salts? I'm waiting for my JC samples to come in the mail so I'll see how it does with the mag. sulf. in them and I'm waiting to order the CJ samples since they are out of stock. I'm just not totally convinced it works the best for me. My hair seems to like a little bit of glycerin in a product with aloe to counteract the frizz but not too much or I go whimpy & stringy.
Plain old Fote gives me lots of curl but also lots of frizz! I may end up combining several different product lines to find my HG. For some reason the AOMM works pretty good so far and I'll continue to compare that and the SS CEJ until I run out and have to make a decision.
The marie dean products look good I've notice a lot of you using her curl cream , how does it compare? I have also notice the Donna Marie curl jelly too, have you tried that as well?
I avoid glycerin like the plaque if dews are under 35F. I can take it only in very small doses, like in CCCC lite. It always gives me frizz. In high dews, by contrast, glycerin boosts my curl. So I'd say, make sure you're using a leave-in conditioner with no glycerin in it. Also, if you use a heavier product (like a curl cream) underneath the CEJ, then you might not need the FHG on top - it might be too much. Better to use a light buttery product to SOTC to tame flyaways in that case instead.
My favorite MD products are the curly styling cream and the red clover/honey leave-in. I also like the mango pudding plus, but in high dews only. You can get samples from Kathymack if you're interested in trying them out. I haven't tried the DM curl jelly, because it has glycerin and I don't need another summer product. In summer, I rotate CJ CCCC (regular not lite), MD CSC, and MD pudding plus: all under SS CEJ.
