My Hair Loves Conditioner-Only Styling

karen -- i sometimes only use ssdd as leave in and styler..

i use jane carter nourish and shine as a sealant ONLY when the dewpoints are very low, like below 10, or i will be in an overheated, dry bldg that day.

some days after i use the ssdd as my leave in, i then add beauticurls leave in as a styler. this has been it for the winter. my hair is happy.
i do a cj repair me pt about every two weeks.

there are other days, mostly in average to high dewpoints, when i use other products as a styler or to calm down some surface frizz. ie, instead of the beauticurls leave in, i might use cj smoothing lotion.

I WISH.

My wurl pattern is too weak. It needs lots of scrunching and enhancing. But I've started using less product than I used to, living with a bit of frizz, for touchable hair, and gotten lots of complements on it.

Maybe if I can stop the highlighting and just keep with the demis like I plan my hair will recover and in a year or so I can do this, but not now. I do it occasionally on the weekend when I don't have anywhere to go though.

Has anyone had success with just a leave-in only regimen all year long? Thinking of how simple this could make my life and how much my wallet would love it if this could work all year. It's really amazing. I haven't not used gel in so long, I just thought it was necessary. Anyone else had success?

Right now I'm back on the product-junkie experimentation bandwagon, but when my wallet revolts and forces me to shut down the spending, I'll be doing the V05 conditioner-as-styler again.

Well, I first tried this technique when i read about it at tightlycurly.com it worked, but i think i used too much conditioner because my hair always turned out crunchy and it looked greasy.

Today, I was detangling my hair from swimming (a literal rats nest). What I did was soak under the shower with cold water, add lots of thick, creamy conditioner, add oil and a spray-in conditioner (liquid) A wide-toothed comb wasnt working, so I used a Denman brush. My curls spiraled beautifully! 45 minutes later, I twisted my hair and put it in a plastic shower cap, then layered it with a towel. I let it sit for about 30-45 minutes . Now, my is so soft, moisturized, shiny, bouncy and spiraled! Not a bit of frizz! Im thinking of doing this for my new regimen!

Just keep in mind my hair is thick, course, and 3a underneath with 3b-3c on top. If you have wavy hair this might be too heavy for your hair and may weigh it down a lot .

I forgot to mention that I used the Bed Head Super Straight Conditioner (it doesnt really straighten my hair at all)

In the recent times, I rarely use gel. I have long hair so I do finger twirl in big chunks with lot of conditioner. I have tried everything from Deva one, KCKT, Suave naturals-cocunut ,Aubery Organics Honey suckle , Giovanni smooth as silk, Shea Moisture. All of them have given me good results. Soft bouncy curls. People stop and notice my hair and ofcourse lot of compliments

I have never tried a Sealant. I should try once. I have to buy GVP CB also, have been eyeing on that for a while.

I can see the inner Product Junkie in me!!lols!!

Trying it today. Poo'd, Protein, DC then GFTN and jojoba yesterday. Then into a single braid. My hair was juicy enough today to give tresemme/grapeseed, only, a shot. We'll see how it goes! An hour after my shower, already, and I see lots of shrinkage....any tips on handling shrinkage ( without elongating with a diffuser) ?

I have used RO conditioner or LI as my only styler at times. when I was younger that's all I used year-round, never gel. It's just inconsistent for me though (but then most of my routines are these days, lol). I love when I find a conditioner that can hold up on its own! One thing that's really nice about styling this way is your hair doesn't get nearly as tangly as when you use gel, detangling is a breeze! or feel nearly as dry even when it starts getting frizzy.

Winners for me in the past have been Suave Humectant (when I used cones-- this worked for me most of the time for years), Alba LI, EO Lavender, Modern Organic Products, California Baby, Giovanni Direct (no longer though, it foams up and doesn't absorb for hours). Have a sample of CJ Beauticurls that worked nicely but only tried it once. Just bought a bottle of Aussie Moist to try alone based on a rec on curlynikki.com.

I've had luck with this in the past too - it works better though for me if I use the conditioner on dry hair otherwise my hair takes in too much water and gets weighed down. The only conditioner I've tried it with is GVPCB - work it in and at first it doesn't look like it's going to do anything, but as my hair absorbs it, it starts to wave. I don't get strong waves from it, but some beachy waves with an occasional whirl. It's a nice way for me to spice up naked hair with a time limit.

I really wanted to like this because it has some protein in it, which my hair likes, and it smells nice, like lavender.

I keep hearing great things about this method, but I am just afraid to try it. I can see my hair being a white ashy mess. LoL!

When I was on holiday last year, I forgot to put my usual jelly in my hair after my leave in condish (must've been a good night out the night before), lol! I didn't even realise until my hair had dried, and it felt a lot lighter and softer, but I knew it felt 'different'. Although it made a nice change, I still prefer the 'hold' of my gel, which keeps my frizzies to a minimum (even if they aren't completely eradicated!)

I'm starting to think my hair likes this best too. I get obsessed with trying to find a styler, but I think my hair looks best just with the conditioner!
Hmm...
I use a cream-gel and love it, as well as a cleansing conditioner, but for some reason, my hair is not very soft like it used to be. I'm going to buy Darcy's Botanicals Shea Butter Curl Moisturizing Cream. It's supposed to be a super moisturizing leave-in that can also be used for styling. Has anyone tried that leave-in for styling?

I actually ALWAYS only style with conditioner. I never use gel or anything although I have a bunch of them. For awhile I was using KY and I like it alot but it's just too much work for me.

I use suave coconut to cowash, 50:50 to condition and I was using GFTN as a leave in. That's it. That's all I would put in my hair and it was great. Very little frizz and I live in central florida where it's hot and humid all the dang time. I can't stand using gel. But I have a strong curl pattern so that might have something to do with it. I love using only conditioner and don't think I'll ever use any kind of styler on a regular basis. I still try things now and again always looking for that "magic" product that will make my hair something it's not. LOL Although now I have experiment again because the GFTN now has a cone in it and my hair hates cones. So I'm auditioning conditioners which, let me tell you, just sucks. I can't find one that I really like as much as I liked the GFTN. But for me, conditioner only styling is the way to go!

oh i do this too!! i got 3c tight curls that really like to show the world how crazy i can look with out doing anything. which my bf LOVES when my hair is nice and big and crazy. after my shower i use my normal condish as a leave in. i mix it with oil in the palm of my hand n just work it through. it does take awhile for my hair to dry but a few times during the drying prosses i tip my hair upside down and just shake it side to side a bit. i dont tough it when i do this, it just gives my curls more "lift" and defines them better. i think i do this 3 times till its dry.

That is awesome...something I really want to give a try! Also, I red on another post that just leaving in conditioner and adding Shea Moisture Curl and Shine Hair Milk gave some stellar results in leiu of gel, so I am deinitely gonna try it
Hair that freely borrows from 3a/ 3b texture schools. These are the things I use to care for it:
  • Apple Cider Vinegar rinses weekly
  • shampoos occasionally that do not contain sulfates
  • conditioners without silicones or proteins (or so I think- Keratin seems to do ok)
  • Flour sack towel
And I dont even know what else right now...thinking I may need to drop gels altogether...

Currently have Shea Moisture and DevaCurl products that I may just need to give up on and cut as a loss...

Update just in case anyone happens to care: I washed my hair using my regular garnier fructise triple nutrition conditioner- left quite a bit in-, flour sack towel dried my hair and then put in the curl milk, let dry and then added some more curl milk and the Shea moisture smoothie...and voila: bouncy, natural looking and feeling, soft and shiny, beautiful curls!!! I'm gonna keep it up adios gel!!!!!

3a, s curly, fine hair that hates sulfates, silicones, and Protiens!

I have finally found affordable and attractive contentment using:

Shampoo- l'oreal eversleek reparative smoothing shampoo
Conditioners- garnier fructis triple condition and l'oreal eversleek reparative smoothing conditioner
ACV
Kinky curly spiral spritz
LA looks gel

It's nice to see this working for other people as well. Since my hair has gotten longer (in between shoulder and APL), this works even better for me. It's also about saving money right now for me, and luckily this helps me do that. On really humid days I add White Rain Extra Body Mousse, a lovely cheaply priced mousse.
