Anyone else never get split ends?

I've never gotten a split end in my life, and it's making me very curious. I only know I'm due for a haircut when my ends start to get this little kink in them at the very bottom, and they start to get rough and dry. :tongue3: But, I've never had a split end. Is that normal? Are any of you other curlies split end-free?

rymorg2 02-19-2011 10:26 AM

I'm a stylist....

Actually, that little kink is a type of split. It's just not a Y shaped split. Depending on how you treat your hair and your hairs' natural tendency to split, it can happen often, or not so much. Consider yourself lucky that it doesn't happen quickly for you! Congrats!

I often advise my clients to do just what you said you do....when you see the kinks and the ends feel dry and crackly come in for a trim. HTH!

Thanks, Rymorg! I feel relieved... :) I thought I was the only one who didn't get technical "split" ends, but I was wrong!

Hi WavyNWild, I am coarse like you and actually grew my hair for 7 years without any haircuts except 3 times "dusted" the ends to even them up a little (less than 1/4 inch trim) and never got any split ends. Split ends are exceptionally rare for me.

I think if your hair is coarse and resistant it's less prone to splitting, and this is normal. If you take good care of it on top of the natural texture being strong, you probably won't get any split ends at all.

My ends get the same way...just a little dry and rough feeling but they've never actually split. But I can definitely tell when I need a trim!

Has anyone else tried the Split Ender yet?

anonymous_58885 02-19-2011 09:47 PM

i never do, either!! haha phew i thought i was the only one :-) it's also naturally super-shiny and i'm always being asked what my secret is.. and the reply is always "i have no idea!" so.. *high five* to us!! :D

wavynwild16 02-20-2011 05:43 AM

Great! Alia_Lara -- I thought I was the only one, too! At least now we both feel better. (Theoretic *high five*! :) ) Super shiny hair is usually low porosity, so maybe you can start telling people that not-so-porous hair is your secret! ;)

Robin -- yes, my hair is naturally very coarse and thick (like yours) and somewhat resistant, although I have very low elasticity. At least coarse hair is good for something!

Kristie -- I definitely know when I need a trim, too! The dry ends just kill me. I can go a while without getting one, though, before I even notice that my ends aren't super soft anymore.

I don't remember the last time I saw split ends! I really only get a trim about 1-2x/yr because I'm tired of my hair being long or my waves are not waving anymore.

I think I remember researching that and it wasn't usable on curly hair. Also I always wondered whether it just took a piece of hair off every strand, and not just the split ends...

As for me I NEVER get split ends either. But I often get single strand knots, especially on hair strands at the nape of my neck. I think a lot of girls that wear their hair down and curly get these. I bite them out in the shower lol... may not be the best idea. I also have noticed crinkly, bent ends occasionally. These may be splits in the middle of the hair shaft instead of the end I guess.

Split ends

Since I started the curly girl method last June my hair has super healthy. I wear my hair up for bed, condition every day and avoid heat. I started the cgm because my hair had lots of split ends. I trimmed them off and I figured they were gone forever because they stayed away.

Well, my methods haven't changed dramatically other than co-washing for the last 2 months. But with in the last two weeks I have had split ends popping up. Maybe because I accidently fell asleep with my hair down?

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

tricello 02-26-2013 12:40 PM

I started curly girl last August and have been looking for split end ever since. I *just* started noticing them in the last two weeks like you. I think it is all the winter gear (wool sweaters, scarfs, etc.) finally taking their toll on my ends. I am getting my hair trimmed next week but may have to think about protective styling as my hair gets longer.

WurlyLox 02-26-2013 01:06 PM

I only very rarely get one of the little knots, and then only when my hair's quite long (below my bra band) and needing a trim.

I've never had the typical split ends except a little bit when I used to use lye-based cream relaxer - over 30 years ago, LOL! Even using that stuff for a few years, I had fewer splits than most of my straighter-haired friends. I was mighty careful with that stuff and didn't color at all, so I'm sure that helped.

Curlygirl323 02-26-2013 02:55 PM

I rarely get split ends that actually split. Once my ends get so fuzzy they bug me, I go get a trim :) But I go once or twice a year.

MojoDojo 02-26-2013 05:05 PM

I've never had split ends.

I only ever go for a trim if my ends start to look uneven (my hair doesn't grow at the same rate everywhere, or it's just an unhappy consequence of how many different curl patterns I have).

My ends always feel drier then the rest of my hair, but they've never split or kinked up.

Puffff 02-26-2013 05:50 PM

I use to get split-ends all the time but I think this was because of how dry my hair was (daily sulfate use) and almost daily straightener use. In fact my 'wake up' that I needed to take better care of my hair was when I went to the salon and the hairdresser had to cut of 6 whopping inches because the hairs had split and it had tracked up my hair shaft and broken it off un-evenly :/

Now today (1.5 yrs curly girl) I haven't had split ends since that time. I check it constantly (I might be a bit paranoid) but my hair has never been more healthy or as strong sooo no split ends for me so far.

Ml001 02-26-2013 06:36 PM

I also rarely get them. :)

jeepcurlygurl 02-26-2013 08:19 PM

I stopped getting split ends when I went CG 8 years ago and stopped using shampoo. sulfates, silicones, and gave up the hair brush.
I trim my hair myself a couple times a year.
