how the heck does this happen - a curly turns straight?

There is a girl at my gym who I have been an acquaintance with for several years. We never really became close because for some reason I find her to be a bit stand-offish. However, we have a friend in common, so we chat briefly every now & then. Anyway, she has very frizzy looking curly hair. She even told me once she blow-dries her hair - no diffuser! Well I saw her this morning after not seeing her for a long time & her hair was stick STRAIGHT & silky looking! I asked her if she had the Japanese straightening & she said no, it just "got straight" all of a sudden! How does that happen?? I hate to say it, but I am sort of jealous!! If you saw her hair prior, you would probably be floored by the difference. She said when she was younger, her hair was not really curly, but I still cannot get over it - she said she wakes up & her hair is straight - easy to do!!!!

Sorry for the vent....
Hair can and often changes texture over the course of a lifetime. Hormones and medications can result in the hair becoming a different texture. I didn't have curly hair until puberty. Of course if she blew dry it with a regular dryer constantly, then it is possible that she damaged her hair so much that it won't curl anymore. It does sound like that her hair just naturally got straighter though. Personally, I love my curls now and would become very upset if my hair got straighter over time. :P

Personally, I think she's lying. People are weird about admitting to doing big things to their appearance. I once went to high school with a girl who showed up with a different eye color and denied they were contacts.

Her best friend did the Japanese Straightening in the past two years, so it is not too far-fetched to think she would do the same. I was actually surprised she had not done it sooner, only because her hair really did not good back then; I hate saying things like that, but I do not feel bad only because I felt it could have looked awesome curly had she just used product in it & not blowdried it. Anyway, I do not know why I am envious of her new shiny straight hair, probably because I have been so frustrated lately trying to get my hair to come out good as I am the queen PJ!!

Hmm something sounds weird about that. Hair can eventually start to straighten out from different things but I can't imagine it going pin straight and shiny all of a sudden. Maybe it did but I would think that even if her curls straightened out a little that she would still have some wave or frizz.

Sure sounds as if she had TR and didn't want to admit it.

Sure sounds like she had it done to me. Nobody's hair does that all of a sudden all by itself, no matter what they say.
I agree with those who think she had to have had something done. Since hair is dead cells really, they won't change on their own. Now if she started having straight roots, yes that could hapen I guess.
2c now!. Started CG 12/11/06.Liking Devacurl and Suave these days.
Sorry to be harsh but she must be STUPID if she thinks anyone can believe that. I really can hardly keep myself from laughing thinking she is so delusional! It's kind of safe to assume her "standoffishness" could come really from insecurity issues.

Although hair suffers changes through a lifetime it's IMPOSSIBLE for a person who was BORN with curly hair to turn completely straight "overnight". The shape of anyone's hair depends on the shape of the follicles in their head, OVAL for curly hair and ROUND for straight hair and your genes predetermine what you get at each stage of your life. For instance, babies usually have softer, straighter hair regardless of what their hair is going to be like in adulthood.

What's going to be interesting is watching her over the next few months when the new growth comes out, that's going to be the "acid test"!
