Oh gosh, I know exactly what you mean! I've been doing this now for 3 years! It all started after I lightened my hair and my reliable and simple no-gel routine couldn't work anymore, the PJ virus got a hold on me!
At first I began trying things from beauty supply stores hoping to find new HGs but later I got a lot of stuff from dollar stores. Some I really did like but the reason they were there was because they were being discontinued so even when I got "back-ups" eventually I'd have to move on. I also stocked up on Dominican COs last time I was there and because they are so rich and my hair so fine they last me a long time. So between one thing and another I ended up with piles of stuff and I only throw something away when I know is too old to be safe so, inevitably, I have plenty of material to invent endless combos.
Part of me has enjoyed the experimentation but it can also get confusing. For that reason I started a hair journal in my computer over 2 years ago but very often I've forgotten to consult it to see which combos were the best so I could repeat them. But even that was not a sure-fire thing as my hair sure has been very finicky, often reacting differently to the same stuff.
So my New Year's hair resolution is to continue to empty as many bottles and jars as I can (but it's going to be hard because this month alone I bought 4 new ones 3 of which I haven't even tried yet...).
