Default advice for my long scraggly bangs please <3

Hey all,
I could use any and all input here..
My hair is mainly one length, below shoulders and then I have long "bangs" that go to my chin. The problem w/my bang area is it does not curl as nice (or really at all) like the rest of my hair, and to top it off the ends of them look very weak & scraggly.

Even when I get trims and such it just looks very dry, dead and uncoopative.

I used to soften them (like relaxer but not as harsh) at ouidad salon to try and control it but decided to grow that out b/c of the chemical.

i am getting annoyed with constantly clipping them back.

Any thoughts what I can do? Thank you so much.

Here's a pic so you can kind of see (if the pic doesn't load it's towards the back of my curls album, link below)

When was the last time you chemically treated them? Has most of that hair grown out/been cut?

I used to relax my hair and my bangs/front of my hair didn't start curling well until all of that treated hair was gone!

Also, would you be willing to cut them shorter and wear them like actual bangs? Sometimes (at least for me) having the length was worse because it pulled the already lack-luster curls down even more. Or you can just stick it out and grow them out completely. That depends on your patience level.

I don't know if this really helps or not! It's really just based on personal experience, and by the looks of it, your curls are much less tight than mine, which might make a difference!

Good luck! I can at least tell you that I feel your pain! (I made a thread about this same issue a few months back... you could look there for what others said too!)

thanks for the reply! last time the bangs were softened was in september 2010...i can see the new growth is almost 3b curly so i'm excited for that- but the ends are soo scraggly & i feel it just doesn't fit in w/the rest of my hair.
i don't think actual bangs would look right on me, but i might trim a bit more of the damaged part then i actually want to just to get rid of it...i was hoping there'd be another solution to it..you def helped so thank you. do you have a link to the thread you mentioned?

thank you- it did give me an idea! i am going to try the micro braid as mentioned on your thread. is it just a plain hanging braid or one of those pretty braids kind of attached to the head like this-Google Image Result for http://blstb.msn.com/i/A8/3C828A61E4E1CA70D0F51B6874F9CE.jpg

i always wanted to learn how to do a braid like that- but i have no clue! lol

It's just a small french or dutch braid. If you are able to do a big one, with patience and practice, you should be able to do one for your fringe. I love how they look with curly hair! I use to do them quite often, actually... This reminds me that I loved them. I have awful bangs atm. They have just reached bellow my mouth. I last had them cut in december, at about eye level so I am quite pleased with the progress so far. Also, I can tell that the newest growth is a little curlier, which is exciting! I am not sure what I am going to do with them in the long run but for now, I usually clip them to the side, underneath. We should start a support group for in between bangs!

Glad it helped! Although, I still don't know what a microbraid is! But I do love the "headband" braid. Those are cute if you can do it right! It took me a few practices, and I don't really do it because I'm pressed for time in the morning, but if you can give yourself a few extra minutes, they're cute and keep your semi-bangs out of the way!

And rj16 - love the group idea! I'd join if I hadn't just cut mine because I was sick of the "in between" look!

That's the plan! I just cut them on Saturday. I'll post a pic tomorrow after a fresh wash!

I only know how to wear them when my hair is down though! I'm trying to get others to post pics of how to wear curly bangs when your hair is pulled back, because I can't quite get it yet, and I wear my hair up a lot! But I do like them with my hair down! So stay tuned!

oh i totally like the idea of a support group for growing out bangs!

the hairline./headband braid is what i want to do...but i don't know how to do a french or dutch braid..any tips on that?

i let my bangs dry yesterday without clipping them down and they are really curly- like 3b! but the curl kinks at a weird place and it doesn't match the rest of my 2c/3a hair...oh the willpower it takes not to get them re-softened lol

Don't do it!!!! I am sure if you google how to do a French braid something will come up. It is easier than it looks... Kind of.. when you clip them, how do you do it? Back? What about a headband?

if you go to my curl album (link in sig) i have a pic of how i clip them back...its on the top of my head

i tried headbands, but they look weird when my hair is down..the bangs stick out to the side and it just looks odd..

i need to get the bangs trimmed, it will help. i *almost* did it myself last night- was analyzing them in mirror and scissor in hand, but i'm too afraid to ruin my hair lol

It looks really good clipped back! I get you not wanting to do that constantly though... How are you going to trim them? Do you plan on keeping bangs?

BTW you are stunning! Your eyes are phenomenal! As is your hair.. lol!

ETA I noticed you're using Ouidad products. What do you wash the cones out with?

aawww thank you

i stopped using Ouidad since going cg- i've only been cg about 2 weeks or so and am using CURLS products now (sometimes a little carol's daughter too)

no i want to grow my bangs out, they drive me crazy! my hair goal length right now is like haley from american idol. i was just going to trim them like how it says to trim own bangs in the curl girl book, but i'm too nervous- i'll just hold out til next time i get the color done...i'm growing out the chemical softener but i can't part with my color haha

How are the Curls products?

I've been cutting my own hair... If you do it, just do it little by little and its pretty hard to go too far wrong. Is the chemical softener permanent, as in you will have to cut it off? If so, I bet a little trim of the ends would perk up your bangs.

i LOVE the curls products..my hair seems to be getting curlier every time i wash, and it feels soo soft!! my friend works for them and i went to a curls in the city (nyc) event and learned about them a month ago and have been hooked ever since. especially the hair moisturizer- my hair DRINKS it!

yea the softener is like a relaxer but it's like half the percentage of chemical so it doesn't make the hair pin straight, like reforms the curl a bit..nonetheless it's still a chemical...so yea i will have to keep trimming them..

i might try to trim them myself, at this point i can't picture them being any worse/weirder then they are lol

Hey, sorry for the delay! School got hectic and I just couldn't get back here!

As for the bangs.... I have yet to get them to look as good as the day I cut them.... go figure.

I attached a picture of what they looked like when I first cut them....

I don't know what to do now.... so maybe don't cut bangs unless you can handle the work or know how to style them!!!

Self trims are easy - that's what I did. I just cut each curl and it was easy and works out really well!!

They look gorgeous Leelee!! Good luck styling them. I think that is part of why I am growing mine out.

My hair is in between wavy and curly so my bangs have to be pretty long for me to get a curl going. Nothing like yours!

leelee your hair is so pretty!

my hair is also more wavy/curly so i can't necessarily cut each curl individually persay..sometimes they are more curlier, and sometimes they clump together in a wave so i am completely clueless i also don't want to cut straight across because it might look more bulkiler then they do already. i also just have to be patient with it, but next time i need color which will be mid may, i will have my stylist trim more bang off then usual to get rid of the dead processed part..i just have to deal with it til then lol
