Default What are these curls called?

I'll try to describe what's going on with my curls at the back of my head today.

when I do a mirror check of the back of my head, I have what looks like long skinny 'ropey' looking curls that from a distance look pretty stringy and not too nice. Up close though, they are actually curls that start right up at my scalp and wind tightly in a very small diameter (drinking straw size) and make tight long shiny tubes. They kind of remind me of worms...so what's going on here? Ususally my hair at the back is like medium loose s-curls but yesterday after using Repair Me, I got the 'shiny worms'...

here's what I mean but a lot smaller in diameter: This is borrowed from the gallery _ this is not me!

I would call them really skinny ringlets. I get them sometimes on the underlayer of my hair.

I can only see the 2nd pic, silly blocking software. Is it the skinny ringlets on the right side of the hair? IDK ringlets?! Clumpage?!

I've been getting ringlet clumpage at the scalp but then when it hits the red(henna) it's like blllleeeehhh. Which makes me so tempted to cut it all off! I'm sure SO would have a heart attack or stroke if I did tho.

I have been getting those a LOT lately, too! They are weird! Mine are EXACTLY like that (maybe a little curlier), except they are almost like two curls wrapping around each other to form one ringlet. It's kinda hard to describe, but it is kinda like the up-close picture of Corkicelli curls in the new CG book. They just wrap around each other and form these "tubes." Weird.

I call them "twisties," definitely a determined clump of curl, making a spiral, just not a boing-y ringlet. In summer, I get those a lot. In winter, I get larger caliber clumps except on some occasions for which I have no explanation.
Perhaps the PT is the culprit. Perhaps it gave you more elasticity?

I have the exact same thing! Its really only on the underside of my head, where my hair never really got damaged from years of flat iron and hair dye abuse. The hair is so curly that two sections curl together to form a tube. My hair underneath is definitely 3b, tight curls that are so curly they are much shorter than my curls in my canopy.

What curl range would you put curls like that into?

My hair is 2cish, but on curly days it always forms a bunch of curly tubes like that (like in my profile pic), each with the diameter of a roll of quarters or so. It looks similar to a 3b coil, but it's composed of more hair and has way less shrinkage, if that makes sense. I've noticed similar curls on the heads of many ladies on the 2 boards. They are definitely curls as opposed to waves, but seem to be categorically different from bouncy, spring-shaped curls. Are they cherub curls perhaps?

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gets these 'tubes'...the whole back of my head from my crown has been doing this everyday since the OP. It's so strange, I try to gently separate them and for a few minutes, they look like my normal 'spring' curls but they very soon re-integrate and make these really skinny tubes...they're so skinny, they look kind of dumb. i wish they were quarter diameter but the biggest one is the diameter of a pen...

They look beautiful! In the Curly Girl Book, Botticelli Curls are described as "Ropie" and about the diameter of sidewalk chalk. That is what they look like to me.

Ah, so that's what they are, "ropies" I have mostly tight 3 b/c ringlets (esp. this time of year) with about 2 face framing 3 a pieces, but I have 2 of these long "ropies" in the back, and I always think they look wierd-especially when I need to get my roots done b/c they curl in a ways that exposes more of my undergrowth!

I wonder what "type" that would be... because I seem to have a looot of them on "bad hairdays" (I don't like them if they are like the majority of my hair

I get those also! I'm 2b (I think) but I've been getting them since going "intentionally CG" with the leave-ins and PTs and DTs and whatnot. I love them! Wish I had them all the time but they grace me with their presence every once in a while (well actually, usually on wash days) and well I feel... proud? Is it strange to feel pride at a tubey curl? lol!

I started getting them right after going CG as well. I get them in the back in the underlayer, so they're my secret tubey curls

I get them too. It used to be just one on each side but I get a lot more now in the back under layer of my hair. I like them, but I never know if hey will show up. I have noticed that if I wash and rinse my hair standing up, they don't show up. If I flip my hair forward and rinse upside down, I tend to get a lot forming over the course of the day.
