Default Breakage

What causes your hair to break? I am so extremely gentle with my hair as far as not using heat to dry it, I never straighten it, I use my pick ever so carefully only at the times that I wash it, but yet my hair still has the tendency to break. Any ideas?

Do you think that gel can cause it to break when it dries all crunchy and stiff?
