The pill that straightens hair -- what happened?

Does anyone remember all the hoopla a few years back when L'oreal said they were going to produce a pill that change hair from curly to straight using hormones? And then a group of Australian researchers picked it up?

What on earth happened? I can't find anything on the 'net about it.

Drug research takes years and years. First you have to develop the drug. Then you have to show that it works in animal models. Then you have get through three phases of clinical trials. Then you have to wait for FDA approval. If Loreal had the actual scientific basis for the drug, it would still take upwards of 10 years to get it approved.

Thanks for the response... methinks you know a lot about the FDA! :-)

This semester (I'm a college student) I've been working in a lab that does drug research, so I've gotten a first hand look at the intricacies of the process
