Why? Oh, Why?!
My hair falls near shoulder length and is a mixture of 3b-3c. But as soon as I put gel, moose, or curling cream on the hair while it's wet, it curls up above the ears making it look like I have short hair. Without any product, it poofs up into a dry frizz ball. Is there a way to keep my hair relaxed without chemical or straighting/curling iron treatment?

Have you tried leave in conditioners or deep conditioners? It sounds like your hair needs more moisture than you are currently giving it. Have you looked into the CG method, cleansing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo? There's LOTS of great info on the newbies board, and you might like the techniques link as well.

Hey Wavyn, heres a more in-depth look at to what my hair routine and characteristic are.
I follow the CG method with suave conditioner as a co-wash and leave-in, which I'm very generous with. Deep conditioning comes in twice a week. Though, I just started doing deep conditioning last week for my first time.
Hair texture is medium-fine with normal porosity and elasticity.

I think the shrinkage is just how your hair is. My hair is almost bra strap length straight but we dry curly it can be just below my ears. Its something you can't change permanantly but you can do twist out or braid out. Or you can even try and use heavier products

Liz, without any product besides conditioner, my hair poofs up more than halfway from its full length.

Oh, okay -- that info will definitely help us "diagnose" your hair better!
Some people find Suave conditioner drying. When I used to CO-wash, that was my HG CO-wash, and I didn't find it drying at all (just itchy, since I found out I'm fragrance-sensitive! ), but maybe it is stripping your hair. Do you use a richer, more moisturizing rinse out (RO) conditioner? If you don't, I'd DEFINITELY recommend getting one. That will help tons with the dryness.
Ah, I'm a newbie DT'er, too! Welcome aboard! I just did my second DT a week or two ago. That will definitely help with dryness.
Well, now that you've said that you're fine-medium texture, you could come to a totally different conclusion about everything I just told you and about your dryness problem. It could be that you're not giving your hair enough protein as opposed to not enough moisture. What stylers do you use? You may want to try a PT (protein treatment) and see if that helps. Fine hair generally LOVES protein and can't get enough of it.
HTH!

My hair is about armpit length (gee, doesn't that sound appealing?), and curls up around my ears or mid-jaw length when freshly washed (maybe chin length on subsequent days), with the back slightly longer. I've been growing it for almost 3 years.
I find that Kinky Curly Curling Custard gives my hair a bit more length when dry. When I use it, I mix it with DevaCurl B'Leave In (because that combination works really well for me), often with gel.
It used to bother me a lot more that my hair has so much jump. I've found that the longer I've been CG, the less it bothers me. I think one of the reasons is that having my hair cut dry, and with the curl means that my hair doesn't always look uneven, as it had previously done, even right after an expensive haircut, thanks to that jump. The other thing is that I had always wanted to grow it, and never gotten anywhere with that. Since I'm no longer getting scalped on a regular basis, it has finally gotten longer. It may be slow progress, but at least it's progress.

All curlies (and even wavies) have to deal with shrinkage. There are a few products that are suppose to help you deal with that. The ones I'm thinking of now are Extenz (great name) and Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding.

Sounds to me like its just your normal hair shrinkage *shrug*.
You could try a few products to make your curls looser/fall longer but I'd just go with it if I were you - its not a bad thing.
