BRHG drying me out? Need Hard Hold Gel recs

I've been playing aroung with BRHG for a few months and it seems to dry me out big time regardless of how little I use and how much leave-in I use underneath it.

I need hard hold, especially this time of year.. are there any other hard hold gels out there (comparable to the hold of BRHG or close to it) that aren't so drying? Does anyone else have problems with it drying their curls out?

I've not found anything with close to the hold of BRHG, so I can't help you there. However, if you haven't already tried this, try using a less holding, more moisturizing gel with a pea-sized dab of BRHG mixed in. I find when I do this that I get (almost) the hold of the BRHG without the dryness of it alone.

I mix them in my palms and then scrunch in as usual - about a quarter-sized blob of my other gel and a pea-sized dab of BRHG for each section of my head. Works pretty well, and once I SOTC, my hair is soft throughout the day.

+1! I have been mixing brhg with kccc, great hold, less crunch!
2c/3a, medium/coarse, normal porosity, normal elasticity
CG and covering the grey!
Thanks for the suggestion ladies! I have tried this and so far to no avail, but maybe I just need to play around with it more. I think the protein in BRHG is what is drying me out.

I wonder if there are any gels out there that are not-quite-but-close to the hold of BRHG?
I think something a little less strong might work for me, too (I use HESME which isn't quite strong enough on it's own, so ideally I'm looking for something stronger than that. LALSG dries me out, too.)

I am currently having some success with Fructis Structure Gel. It's the strongest I've come across.
2B low porosity low elasticity fine texture
I'm not CG - tried it and failed for two years. My scalp hates it.

I just read the ingredients on curl mart, and looks like there's a cone in it. But maybe it's a water soluble one, I can't keep them straight so I avoid all of them.

As for hard-hold gel recs, I really, really like Aussie Instant Freeze Gel. It's got very nice hold, and it's protein-free (and it smells really yummy, too!). It's the hardest hold gel I've found as of yet. I still have many more to try, but this one is one of my favorites so far!

Here's the ingredient list for joigel:

"Deionized Water, PVP/VA Copolymer, Acrylates/C10/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Triethanolamine, Glycerin, Potassium Dimethicone Copolyol Panthenyl Phosphate, Hydrolyzed Sweet Almond Protein, Phospholipids, Catalase, Horseradish (Armoracia Rusticans) Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Coffee (Coffea Arabica) Extract, Kelp (Macrocystis Pyrifera) Extract, Carbomer, Octoxynol-9, Isoceteth-20, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, Benzophenone-4, Quaternium-15, Ext. D&C Violet #2".

There's no peg in front of the "potassium dimethicone..." (couldn't figure out how to bold it!!), so not water soluble?

The non-water soluble 'cones are...well, everything else that ends in -cone, -conol, and -xane. This time I promise I didn't forget anything, unless new 'cones have been developed.

Thank you guys so much! I will do some research and look into a few of these tonight and would love to hear more thoughts on any of these! Is the Joico protein-free?

After browsing the boards, I found a few more maybes, but it sounds like at least a few people found each drying:

- Pravana Curl Enhancer Gel
- KMS California Hairstay Cranberry-Pepper Firm Hold Gel
- CHI Infra Gel

Anyone have any thoughts or experiences with these or any others? Keep the advice coming!

Thanks for the cone explanation, wavynwild16, now I won't have to avoid everything!

Have you tried AO B5 gel? I have it here, haven't tried it yet, but the bottle says it's moisturizing. Might be another one to try... Sigh, so many products, so little time

I love BRHG, but Max Green Alchemy Sculpting Gel (in the tube) is a close 2nd. It gives me comparable hold to BRHG -- some days I like it better than BRHG. I only use a gel for 2-3 days in a row tops; I usually alternate between the stylers in my sig.

Another supposedly great hard hold gel is Alba's. I don't remember the whole name of the product. I bought a tube, but promised myself I wouldn't open it until I finish one of my others, and I am pretty close to using up HESMU, which I don't like at all. That one is supposedly a hard hold gel that barely held my curls at all.

I will post back on the Alba gel if you are interested, but there's a big thread about it already.

Thanks Spiralli! I'm intrigued by the Max Green Alchemy Sculpting Gel. If I use anything too high in protein-content I get dry.. I checked out the ingredient list (*by NO means an expert at interpreting ingredients*), and it looks like the protein is lower on the list. You haven't found this gel drying at all??

No, not drying for me at all. Try calling or e-mailing MGA to see if they can send you a sample of it. I swapped for it a while back and loved it immediately. It's pricey but worth it to me because I don't use a lot, or use it as my only styler, so 1 tube can last me 6 months at this point. I would offer to send you some myself, but I am down to about a week's worth left and need to order more.

Just to be clear, its full name is "Max Green Alchemy Organic Scalp Rescue Sculpting Gel", right?

Yes, and here it be, just to confirm

IME, it's more liquidy and not as sticky as BRHG out of the tube; it's a bit more runny. I love the smell, sort of herbaly/powdery to me. I get nice shiny curls that don't feel as producty as when I use BRHG. Really, these 2 are so close as my HG's.
