CG-friendly gel for 2c/3a hair?

Yesterday I posted looking for a cg-friendly mousse, but the replies convinced me that what I really want is a gel.

I have a mix between 2c and 3a wavy/curlies, and am looking for a gel with strong hold! I'm specifically looking for one that isn't intended to volumize. I have enough volume as it is - the strands are relatively thin, but I have A LOT of them!

Do you have any recommendations? Thanks, again!
LAL Sports Gel
Ecostyler (any of them, there are a lot)
Home made flax seed gel
Sort of CG sometimes, but not really
2B, medium? normal porosity and elasticity?

Cleansers -
Suave Clarifying, Philosophy Happy Birthday Beautiful

Stylers - BRHG, re:coil, Ion Hairspray

I live in the NYC area.

I personally am a big fan of Herbal Essences Totally Twisted, it works wonders for my hair and I'm a 2c/3a combination as well It has pretty good hold and it's very cheap, only like $3 for a tube.

I've also heard wonderful things about flaxseed gel even though I personally am too nervous to try it lol, but I know many people here adore it!

Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee - 4 to 6 peas worth can give very strong hold (though you can use more). You can mix it with leave-in or stylers if it is too difficult to evenly distribute so little. This stuff is like superglue that scrunches out nice and shiny.

Ecostyler Krystal (the only eco I tried) - can be mixed w/ a few peas BRGH if desired, but may not be necessary. Fun to press a big a glob in.

FSG - not strong hold by itself, but may do. As a base (using lots of it), it bumps up the hold of anything else and is esp good for filling in missing spots in styler application.

Stylers often hold better with less leave-in conditioner (though plenty of LI may be necessary for moisture retention). Good to experiment with med hold stylers on hand, just in case they may be enough hold.

My favorite hard hold, protein and 'cone-free gel is Aussie Instant Freeze (although all of the Aussie gels are good options!). Another popular hard hold gel is Herbal Essences Set Me Up (also protein free). L.A. Looks Sport gel (and BRHG, which was already mentioned) are firm holding and contain protein.

HTH!
Type 2c/3a with lots of hair and a super sensitive scalp! Med/slightly coarse texture, low porosity and elasticity.

Thanks to all of you for your recommendations! I'm so excited to begin a new hair adventure! Gel is completely uncharted territory for me, except for smoothing down the random frizzies when I wear my hair back.

I've been using Ouidad products for cleansing and conditioning, but I haven't had such good luck with their styling products. Of course, it's been a few years...perhaps they've come out with new formulas.

Thanks, again, fellow curlies!

Also, do you all recommend using a gel by itself? If not, do you put the gel on top or underneath another product? I've been using a creme followed by a mousse, but wasn't getting the hold I want. Thoughts?

Thanks again!
Kinky-Curly Curling Custard this is my favorite gel by far and I love that there is no glycerin in it. I find that glycerin and humidity do not mix!

And then I apply gel, very generously, with my head flipped over and scrunching upwards into the hair. Then I flip my hair back over and make sure I get gel into my shorter top layers, too (but not a lot -- just enough to make them hold their curl). Then I let my hair air dry for an hour and a half or so, and go back and look at it and see if there are any frizzy pieces... and at that point I put a little bit of creme or more gel in those spots to smooth it.

You could also experiment with mixing your creme and gel together? That seems to work for me very well, especially when I'm going for 2nd day hair and need a little touch-up.

NOT having 'cones in it makes it CG -- everything else, like no polyquats, alcohol denat., etc., is just extra stuff and doesn't determine whether something is CG.

I used to use gels by themselves before I started experimenting with layering products, and it worked okay. I think using different products in layers works best, but you have to experiment with different methods. I like using a LI condish, sealing with an oil, and then moving into my products -- curl cream, medium hold gel, hard hold gel. When I use FSG, it acts as my curl cream and medium hold gel, so I just use that and some Aussie on top. Basically, I just move up on the "hold" scale with my different products, and I like to use something creamy -- well, a little more moisturizing (because I don't have a lot of really creamy stuff!) -- underneath some hard hold stuff.

HTH you out a little!

DCWavylady, is your hair low porosity and fine? If so I think we have similar hair types!

the gels that have worked best for me are Garnier curl shaping spray gel, CURLS goddess curls gel, Deva Angell, and KCCC. I've had to change them a lot because my hair is fickle and the products stop working after a while :/

Mousse never really worked for me either. I used it when I first went curly and it was fine, but after a while I realized I needed more hold and moisture.

2c/3a, low porosity, very fine and barely holds a style!

Hi GinaMarie,

Yes, my hair is fine - I just have a lot of it! I just looked up low porosity (that's a new one for me), and it sounds like my hair is that, too. I'll definitely try your gel recommendations!

To all,

Thank you for your recommendations, too! I tried Herbal Essences Totally Twisted gel, but my hair rejected it. It felt very...mucky. I can't think of a better word. It was like I had a layer of build up. I'm glad this gel works for so many - I plan to give it to a curly friend of mine who wants to try it, too.

Onto my next experiment...

Thanks, again!
