Candy's Cheap-Gel Try-Out Marathon Extraordinare!

In realizing the advice I've been giving to new curlies, I've found that I don't follow it myself. I've found my curls are gel kinda-gals, so I've been wanting to start some serious experimenting. When I see new curlies ask for advice on products, I always say: "Start cheap! Don't waste you're time and money and patience on $20 hair products simply to find out the $5 products would have worked all along." What a thought...

So, there I was, drooling over KCCC and AG:Recoil, wishing I had the guts to spend the money on them, when I haven't even tried LAL Curls. So, that's what I'm doing. I purchased 3 inexpensive, drug store gels and 1 moderately-priced gel, and will be trying them over the next few days.

Here goes nothing! And if they don't work, they'll be on the swap boards for a great deal.

Thanks for listening, Curlies.

I am curious to see how you do. I'm a product junkie but hate the prices of some products. I struggled with the cost of KCCC and finally bought it this week. Lovin it!

I hope it works out. I've used HEBE gel and really liked it. I'm actually thinking about trying it out again...haven't used gel in ages.

I really liked the KCCC. It smelled delicious. My hair unfortunately hates aloe, so it didn't work. But, I did like it the first time I used it...would have kept using it if it didn't dry out my hair.

I think HEBE is Herbal Essences Body Envy. I've seen the mousse but never the gel.

I can only use KCCC if I mix it with another product like SS CEJ. Otherwise my waves just go limp!
Coarse texture, normal-high porosity, normal elasticity (Komaza Care), very weak waves
cleanser: Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo, CJ Daily Fix

rinse out: GVP Conditioning Balm, CJ Repair Me, CJ Smoothing

jellies/creams: CR Curl Maker, KCCC, UFD Curly Magic
gels: CJ CQ, BRHG

I don't remember if the KCCC had an aloe base. I swapped it with another curly. I was using FOTE gel and gradually noticed it was drying out my hair. I first started using it in India, so I didn't notice it was so drying, because there was so much humidity around. And, I had just gone CG, and my hair was already dry so I didn't know what it should feel like. Then I tried the KCCC and it dried my hair out right away. I also had a conditioner with aloe in it. So, somehow my little brain figured out that my hair did not like aloe. Aloe is supposed to be moisturizing, so I don't think the drying effect is really common. I would at least try a sample to see. I noticed the drying by the second use. Hope this helps.

I'll definitely be following this thread.

What brands have you bought?
Hair type: Mostly 3C, medium porosity to high porosity depending on the day, dense, fluffy, dry, tangly!

I have purchsed:

L.A. Looks NutraCurls
L.A. Looks Cashmere Curls
La Bella Lots of Curls
CHI Infra Gel

So far I have used the NutraCurl. It was very softening, smelled great and what it had a hold of, it held for the whole day. I have very thick hair and tend to actually not use enough product, so I have high hopes that an extra dollop of this stuff with really stick it out and hold my curls. Plus, it was pretty humid yesterday, and I didn't have much frizz at all. And it was suuuper easy to distribute, it just glided through my hair, which was awesome because I tangle pretty easily. Over all, this one gets a definite second try.

Today, I am trying LA Looks Cashmere curls. It seems to have a comparable consistency to the NutraCurl, and I think all LAL gels smell the same (which is DELICIOUS! lol) So we're into day 2, here goes!

SS CEJ is some amazing stuff! I don't get much curl enhancement by itself for some odd reason but I like to mix it with other things like KCCC, JC RR and DM Miracurl Gelly. Many people like to mix it with her FHG.

If you buy it and not like it, you could always swap it. SS products (along with Kinky Curly products) go fast on the swap boards!

So here's my two cents, cc3, as we have pretty similar hair.... I bought kccc right off the bat, been using it for several months and I do love it. But my hair just hasn't been looking or feeling right, and couldn't quite figure it out. My hair hates aloe straight up, like avg, but I thought aloe in products seemed ok. Since we have a looming postal strike here I'm hoarding my kccc and thought I'd try some drugstore brands. These don't usually do well for me, and in Canada we don't always have the popular ones on the ground. So today I tried Garnier Pure Clean gel and holy smokes I love it! What a surprise, I'm totally impressed! My hair feels better than with kccc, can't explain it but it feels lighter, no frizz, great curls, even my DH noticed! So this product snob is a convert!! You don't even want to know how much kccc costs to get here with shipping, etc, and AG is a local Vancouver company so recoil is everywhere and not expensive (I'm not crazy about it). Pure Clean was cheap and I have great hair today, so I'm a happy cg! Good luck with your trials and don't be surprised if you find something you like!

There are very few products I'd be willing to buy w/o trying samples first. I bought some CJ products w/o testing a couple months ago and like 2 out of 3. The one I don't really like I'll keep using but won't repurchase.
