Is there a difference in how buildup feels vs. how overconditioning feels?

Hi guys! I'm new and I think I'm actually doing pretty well with the CG method. I'm 8 days in and I experienced no adjustment period. My hair was always dry before and it now feels great! But all this researching I'm doing has concerned me. I'm not sure what buildup or overconditioning feels like...so I'm not sure if I would ever need to use a low poo. I bought Burt's Bees Rasberry and Brazil Nut Shampoo, just in case. But from my understanding you don't have to break from a no poo routine if you have overconditioning. If I ever ran into either of these problems, I'd like to know how to distinguish so I can decide whether to continue no poo or go low poo. So what do they feel like? Are they the kind of gross feelings where you'll just know if you have them? And how can you tell if you have one or the other?

Welcome!

Build up
of product on hair leaves hair dull, sticky, frizzy, stylers don't hold well. Solution - clarify with vinegar solution, baking soda wash then vinegar solution rinse, lowpoo, or possibly sls if silicone or mineral oil suspected, switch or cut down on suspect product.

Build up of product, etc. on scalp can make scalp itchy, flaky, oily, sticky, decreased root volume. Solution - massage every inch very well while washing and while rinsing, vinegar solution rinse, sugar mixed with wash scrub, water wash, baking soda wash or scrub followed by vinegar solution rinse, lowpoo, switch cowash or lowpoo. Very important - test all products, one at a time, on a spot behind your ear and on the inside of your arm for 48 hours to see if your skin likes them - and skin sensitivity can change with temperature, humidity, etc.

Having the moisture / protein balance tipped toward moisture leaves hair overly stretchy / not springy, not well-clumping / frizzy, prone to breakage, and lank. Solution - add protein, decrease moisture only if necessary.

btw - Having the moisture / protein balance tipped toward protein leaves hair dry, brittle. Solution - add moisture, maybe lay off protein for a while.

Combinations of the above are common. Also, the initial transition into CG can be wacky, oily, itchy, and frizzy until things settle down.

I and lots of others have had itch issues with suave coconut, though many do fine. If you have scalp issues, that would be the first thing I'd switch out or alternate with another cowash. Many lowpoo every once in a while, that is CG, and just fine.

Thank you! So if buildup became a problem I could use the low poo I bought, but if overconditioning (or overusing protein?) became a problem I would have to get new conditioners with adjustments in either moisture or protein depending on which was the problem? Is that interpretation right? And if hair was oily would you say that would be a problem of buildup?

Protein / moisture balance adjustments - can do treatments or add-ons or can switch products. E.g. to get more moisture, can add moisurizing pre-wash, deep treatment, a heavier conditioner, or more leave in (though, esp. in summer, too much leave in can lead to producty frizz = build up). To get more protein, can do a protein treatment. It is nice to have on hand a moisture heavy conditioner and second protein heavy conditioner and use whichever your hair likes that day. Wet hair too stretchy, or if you have thin stranded hair, then use protein heavy. Wet hair under-stretchy, or if you have course strands, then use moisture heavy, protein-free conditioner. Though many like protein in addition to moisture for low elasticity. Been getting build up, then use less of the suspect product.

I personally just use products that are very rich and most have protein in them to cover all my bases for my naturally-dry and med strand hair. If my hair needs more protein, I'll do a protein treatment. If my hair is overproteined, I'll cut it out for a while. Sometimes I'll do a deep moisture treatment, but I'm already maxed out with the steps I do to add moisture to my hair. I do like doing vinegar rinses every once in a while and get good results for whatever reason (removing buildup, closing cuticle). YMMV

Sounds like you are doing just fine!

Gecko gave you a lot of good information.

Another type of buildup shows by having frizz when your hair is wet. Depending on the offending ingredient, a lowpoo or SLS poo is needed (Personally, my hair hates baking soda and I don't find that ACV does enough to remove offending ingredients. It will help with overconditioning.) When I first started, I was really "strict" in my feelings about cowashing ONLY. After six months of cowashing, I found that my hair liked natural soap bars for cleansing. When CJ Daily Fix came out, I started using it a few times a month for it's chelating properties (I also take it to the salon for my haircut/highlight every six weeks. They have Deva, I find the NoPoo very drying and won't let them use it.) If I use an ingredient that my hair doesn't like, I use the DM shampoo. I clarify once a year with the generic Nexxus Aloe Rid. It's not all that bad--and it's only once a year.

I, too, use really rich products in minute amounts. Use lots of products with protein and do a moisturizing PT at least once a week.

The more you read and get to know your hair, the better you will do.

Wow, lots of information to think about. Thank you both! I've been making it more of priority to add more moisture because my hair was pretty dry pre-CG. I don't feel like I've gotten too greasy or anything, but I'm sure it's possible. And I don't think I've had a buildup problem, although my mom touched my hair for some reason a few days ago and then got worried because she said it felt like I had lots of product in my hair, and she knows I hate when people touch my hair while it's drying or mess it up or something. That worried me a little bit...And kathymack--you said that there's another type of buildup that shows in having hair that's frizzy when it's wet. Does that mean that if a person gets flyaways when their hair is wet, they could have that? Because plopping has helped to subdue my flyaways, but they still start to form after I plop. Oh, and protein is probably the thing I know least about, but I've been using Nature's Gate conditioner. I heard that they are full of protein, and I seem to be having no problems, so....
