Default Is this true- sulphates cause shedding?

I've read over and over again on the Long Hair Community that sulphates cause shedding, and I'm just wondering how that's possible (considering the majority of shampoos contain sulphates). I'm especially curious because my hair seems to really like sulphates and I use an ALS shampoo on a weekly basis, but if I'm able to cut out shedding, I'd switch to a non-sulphate shampoo.

Sulfates don't make me shed. My hair loves a good cleaning. My pores on my scalp do too

Your hair sheds naturally. There is no way to stop it totally. Maybe they feel that because some sulfates are harsh that it causes more. If you arent coming away with large handfulls of hair i wouldnt be concerned.

kind of off topic and kind of gross but some of us take showers after work right there at the workplace. Well just me and my boss (who is male). My boss is VERY hairy! He shaves his head bald but my hubby has gone on trips with him before and they made fun of him (my boss) once when they got to the hotel and he layed on the bed without a shirt on --- they said, "are you going to sleep with that sweater on?" I guess his back is like a bear.
Anyway, I get into the shower the other day at work and notice a HUGE glob of hair blocking the drain!!! EEWWW. I had to get out and grab a papertowel to get the rat out of the drain!!! I was so grossed out that I gagged.
I'm going to tell him to make sure he cleans up after himself. I don't want to be cleaning up his hair all the time.
So, he sheds ALOT! LOL.

When I stopped using sulfates this summer my hair started falling out in handfulls. It took me a long time to figure out why it was happening and I blamed it on other "issues". My scalp got so terrible that I had to start shampooing again. After I started using sulfates again my hair stopped shedding so much.

If your current shampoo doesn't seem to make your hair excessively dry, I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think it would cause shedding in excess of what would happen naturally.

I wouldn't say that it CAUSES shedding, but I do know that when I washed, I lost less hair when I was CG then when I shampoo with sulfates.

I noticed this during the past week. I usually alternate co-wash days with shampoo days. This week, though, I've been co-washing more, and noticed there was less shedding. I checked around the tub to make sure it didn't accumulate somewhere else (sorry ) but no. It was only a slight difference , but still something to make me go hmmmm.
