Is olefin sulfonate a sulfate?

I found this ingredient in a shampoo I purchased that was supposed to be sulfate free. Does anyone know if this is a sulfate?
Armpit length (dry), middle of back wet, 2c/3a, fine, porous, color-over-gray, normal elasticity. Trying so hard to grow it out.
CG since June 2011 and loving it so far.
Product Junkie-love anything CJ. Used to love KT and KCCC, but lately doing nothing for my hair but flattening it.
Am experimenting with products to see what works for me. Seems like I get different results every day even if I use the same products!
Yes, it is, and a pretty harsh one at that. Here is a link that talks about different sulfates:

Thank you for the link. The low poo I was looking at is the cleanser in the Kinky Curly line. I was going to use it to remove build up. And thanks for the info.

Commercially, when a product is touted as "sulfate-free" this will mean that the product does not contain sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate and/or ammonium lauryl/laureth sulfate due to the "mass awakening" that they have the potential to dry out the hair. Unfortunately, there are other surfactants that can be just as drying (or it is just improperly formulated for hair). So while olefin sulfonate technically is not commercially considered a sulfate, it can be drying depending on how it's formulated into the final product. That said, one ingredient cannot tell you how the entire product will work, it's the whole formulation that counts.

There are quite a few posters on this board and elsewhere that use that Kinky Curly shampoo to clarify their hair. So really, you won't know how it works on your hair unless you try it out.

Well, I purchased the shampoo with the intention of using it to clarify, so I guess I'll give it a try and see what happens. I may be on the Swap Board with it by this time tomorrow.

I found Come Clean to be harsh and stripping when used alone, and I only used it when I feel like I really needed it. I have learned, though, that it helps to dilute it with a conditioner. Last time I used it, I added a small bit to CJ Daily Fix, and I was able to get the clarification I needed without the stripping feeling. If you find it harsh, you might want to try that before you swap it.

Med-coarse, normal porosity, low elasticity

That's a good idea. I'll try mixing it with my CJ Daily Fix and see if that helps make it less damaging. Thanks.
