I ended up tipping (cut was pretty inexpensive since I had a coupon so I tipped)

I do, and she's hasn't objected in the 10 years I've been seeing her. I know the *etiquette* says not to, but as I said she's never complained.

why is it bad etiquette to tip the owner? cos in the end she's getting the most profit anyway? if she does a good job a tip shows your appreciation! screw etiquette!

I've always heard not to tip a salon owner, but out of curiosity after looking online, that seems to be passe.
from oprah.com
Salons
If the owner cuts your hair, you're off the hook, right? Wrong. Turns out most salon owners welcome gratuities. "Not tipping the owner is an old tradition that's dying out," Post says. She recommends 15 to 20 percent of the fee, whether or not the stylist owns the place. When more than one person (stylist, colorist, blower) attends to you, split 15 to 20 percent among them according to how much each contributed to the outcome. A basic shampoo and conditioning rates $1 to $3; a wash involving foil removal and color rinses requires a bit more. Slip 15 to 20 percent each to a masseuse and a manicurist.

That doesn't make sense to me. The salon owner gets the total fee you pay. Tipping is redundent. I don't do that.

I had a similar idea.
I know the internet is not he end-all, be-all authority, but if you do a google search for "tipping a salon owner" you'll get alot of hits. I haven't read them all, but from the few I've looked at, they indicate tipping a salon owner is acceptable and often proper.
go figure?

My stylist left the salon and cuts from her house, now, and I always tip her 20%. People have told me it's not necessary because of the circumstances, but a job well done is a job well done, whether you own the salon or work at home. To me, it's a sign of appreciation.

i had my hair cut in a home before with a use to be salon stylist , she worked outta her home alot and i tipped her .. i would think it would go the same as tipping the owner as well that does your hair , i mean if i hada owner do my hair i would tip them as well unless they did a crappy job then thats another story. just not proper not to tip.

I think you should always tip the stylist whether they're the owner or not- assuming they did a good job.
A comment my stylist (also the owner of the salon) made regarding this exact subject leads me to beleive that in the industry, everyone is expected to be tipped for a job well done.
