Horsetail -- Anyone use this in any hair preparations?

I found a place where I can buy marshmallow root (Picking some up today. Hooray!), but I also saw that I can buy horsetail. I see that it's an ingredient in various, much-loved curly hair products. Has anyone experimented with horsetail on their own; if so, how'd that work out?

I'm feeling pretty adventurous playing beauty shop today, so I just know I'll come up with something to do with it as well as the marshmallow root, but it's always nice to cut down on some of the trial and error.

i don't know why it did not come up on google. you can easily search it on the nc search if it has anything to do with hair!!

I know lots of people like putting marshmallow root in their FSG water, too. I think it gives more shine and body or something. I've never used it, but I heard great things about it on BB's big FSG thread.

I tried putting marshmallow (herb) in my FSG and it pretty much killed any light hold it gives me.
I like horsetail so much, I collected a bunch from the ditch near where I live - it grows all over the place. I like a rinse with it (2-3 tsp in 1 cup water) or I wash my hair with a mix of horsetail and nettle tea, sometimes hops too (I cut a bunch of nettles from a riverbank too).
I've never put it in FSG alone (or rather used the tea for FSG), but I have mixed it with other herbs. Herbs do change the behavior of the FSG in your hair.

If you're using powdered horsetail, tie it in a piece of old t-shirt or thin cloth and use that as your "teabag."
Horsetail is loaded with silica, but most of it is not going to dissolve in water - maybe there's a teeny bit of water-soluble silica in there. But it is loaded with "proteins" and I love how it makes my hair feel.

Just today I made up a batch of FSG where I steeped marshmallow root and used that water to boil the flax seed in. I haven't used it yet because I've got other FSG to use first, but I'm hoping it works well for my hair. If not, no problem. I'll just start using marshmallow to make a rinse for my hair separate from using it in FSG.

Marshmallow works really well for other people in FSG. I have fine, silky hair that gets weighed down easily, that's my problem with it. It does add slip. Most of us are cursed with nettles and horsetail growing nearby unless you live in an enormous city and never leave.

Look up Equisetum arvense (field horsetail) and Urtica dioica (stinging nettles).
Nettles have stinging hairs that give anybody a burning, red, bumpy rash on contact. Some plants are less "stingy" and it wears off in about 20 minutes. They don't sting at all once wilted or dried. I wore gloves. Nettles tend to grow near damp places (riverbanks, ponds, sloughs). Horsetails grow in ditches, riverbanks, floodplains, woods, fields - they're really weedy. Not a plant to encourage!
Great to get them for free if you can manage it.
