FINALLY getting a hair cut tomorrow!!

I have no idea what to do with my hair. It's been about a year (give or take). I've been kind of going through a transition. I damaged my hair by using a flat iron. So I've been waiting for it to grow out some. I think it's grown out enough for me to have a cut. I'm dying for it to be curly again.

Right now it's about to the middle of my back and have long layers. I just don't know what to tell the stylist tomorrow. I want it shorter but still want it long enough to pull it back as I'm not a fan of having hair against my face. Should I get some layers again or just one length for now? I don't think I'm prepared to go so short to get all my straight hair cut.

Any input I would be appreciate!

curlies can't really wear a straight cut -- we'd get the dreaded triangle!! lol

long layers are generally very good, i would not get short layers with curly hair. i'd cut off as much of the damage as possible without making your hair shorter than you want it. does the stylist work with curly hair?
remember, if she cuts your hair wet now that it is curly it will shrink when it dries, so you need to allow for that!

Yes, long layers are probably the way to go, especially since you've already got long layers and know how to work with your hair to style them. And it's definitely best to work with an experienced stylist who really knows what they're doing with curly hair. Hope your appointment is with one.

Before they pick up any scissors, be sure tell them where you want your finished, dry-haired length. You can be really specific by pointing exactly to where on your arm/shoulder/neck (depending on how much you're getting cut off) you want your DRY hair (i.e. after shrinkage) to fall.

If they're going to cut it wet (And there are good, experienced curly hair stylists who still cut hair wet), it's important that the stylist actually sees your hair in its curly state before they wet it down. Back in the day when I didn't know to even ask about curly hair specialists, I went to plenty of salons where when I showed up for my appointment, the 'shampoo girl' would take me back to the sinks right off the bat, and the first look the stylist actually got of me was when my hair was already wet.

I got my hair cut a couple of weeks ago and was excited but still really nervous. I actually practiced what I was going to tell the stylist so I wouldn't forget anything. Plus it couldn't get myself comfortable with the idea of pulling out an actual list of things to tell him -- although that's not a bad idea.

Enjoy your cut!

ETA -- Oh, I see you've been a curly for a while now. Most of this is old hat for you then. Oh well.

Sadly the hair dresser that I'm going to is just a regular stylist. I can't afford to go one that works with curly hair. The last time I went to her I told her the whole story about how I damaged my hair with a flat iron. So she cuts it and then puts whatever it was in my hair, drys it and then takes the flat iron to it!! OI!! I was cringing when she was doing that.

To be honest before I booked the appointment I forgot that I have to buy a train and bus pass and will only leave me about 10 till the end of October.

I'll have to figure out what I'm going to tell her tomorrow and how short I want to go. Right now I think my shortest layer is (I think) almost down to my shoulder.

Thank you both ladies that answered! I have been on here for a long time but haven't really followed any of the CG/plopping/no-poo/low-poo stuff.I want to but until something better comes along job wise I just can't afford anything.

If it's not a pain for you to leave the hair shop with wet hair, you could tell her you ONLY want a haircut and NO styling afterwards. Most places I've been to charge less if you don't require styling along with a haircut. Might be worth checking on that at least. Not only would you save $$, but you'd save yourself any damage from blowdrying and flatironing your hair. (Be sure to bring your own, trusted styling product/s you can apply yourself before you leave the shop.)

Seriously. Don't let her do anything to your hair that you don't want. Tomorrow when you're there to get your hair cut, keep thinking of hhhhundreds of curlies here on nc.com cheering you on to just say "NO!" to the stylist . And if you need it, we'll all be here to give you a virtual pat on the back afterwards.

if you don't want to leave with it wet, then ask her if you can use a diffuser to dry it, then do it yourself, leaving it a little damp. i have done this many times over the years if it is too cold to go out with wet.
don't let anyone do anything to your hair you don't want, it's your hair!

Just tell her right from the start, "I don't heat style my hair at all" That's what I did and she listened. Good luck!

Thanks for all the support ladies!! I'm going to tell her not to use the flat iron on me. I still don't know how short I'm going to go. Hopefully after this ill be able to wear my hair curly again!! It's just a shame that you can't see any of them now. I think I'm between a 2b and 2c. I think the weight of my hair is just weighing them all down.

Time to get ready and go!!

Well I'm home from my hair cut!! She did what I wanted and didn't use the flat iron on my hair. She did blow dry it and I asked her to put some protection stuff in my hair and used a very low heat setting. I'm quite impressed. I can't wait to wash my hair and use my product in it....just to see what kind of curl I have. I think that there are still straight parts and I'll have to wait again to get it cut

Oh my goodness!! You were getting your hair cut at the crack of dawn where I am!
I'm really happy for you that it all worked out so well! Do post pics of you with your new curls.
